Sony Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, KojiPro, Sucker Punch, Polyphony Digital are likely all making cross gen games.

FH5 has completely redone visuals and assets compared to the One X version?
Assets yes. Visuals on the whole. Probably not. Though they said the lighting engine got some volumetric lighting and fully dynamic GI. (used to baked like most games last gen)

The asset quality for the open world is near photorealistic.

If Sony cross gen games have this level of photorealistic graphics then I will be happy. If they look like PS4 Pro Ghost Of Tsushima but at native 4k 60 fps then meh.

Thats not particularly impressive and looks a step behind Horizon or even Flight Sin. Though that's to be expected, FH is moving through environments much quicker than Horizon

Its hardly looking like a torch carrier for next gen graphics

We have known about SSM, GG and PD making GoW, Horizon and GT7 for both PS4 and PS5, but recent rumors of a GoT expansion, Kojima announcing Death Stranding Director's Cut and Naughty Dog announcing they are actively working on Factions... suggests that almost all Sony studios are working on cross gen games. It's not just a few studios who began development back in 2017 and 2018 before devkits were sent out.

It's highly unlikely that GoT expansion would be PS5 only. Death Stranding Directors Cut look pretty much identical to the PS4 version, and Factions was always going to be cross gen.

That means 6 out of the top 8 Sony Studios are all actively making cross gen games with Sony Bend and Insomniac being the only two studios likely working on next gen only games.

If those June 28th or July 8th rumors of a Sony event are true then we might see the following cross gen games from Sony's first party studios.
  • SSM - GoW 2
  • PD - GT7
  • GG - Horizon Forbidden West
  • ND - TLOU Factions expansion
  • KojiPro - Death Stranding expansion
  • GoT - Expansion
Thoughts? Concerns? When will we see next gen only games from these studios if they are all working on last gen stuff in 2021? Are we looking at 2025 or do they have multiple teams who might show up with next gen only games at this summer event?

I hope ND and SP decided to make TLOU Factions and this GoT expansion next gen only. It would be nice to have smaller $40 next gen only games this fall while we wait for Horizon, GoW and GT7 to drop next year.
There is no point in making games that released on previous systems to be exclusive to PS5 (e.g. Ghost of Tsushima) artificially. There is no reason to hold back GOT and Factions from the PS4 (specially given the current ecosystem with COVID and the lack of available systems.)

People forget this but Sony doesn't just abandon their previous console at the drop of a hat. The transition from PS3 to PS4 was different due to the nature of the systems but Sony still had some of their titles releasing on the PS3 when they could have "held" them for the PS4 (oddly enough the chatter I remember at the time was why doesn't Sony push The Last of Us and release it for the PS4.) If you want to go back even further, God of War 2 released on the PS2 the year the PS3 was coming out which they could have held back for the PS3.

I am very surprised by the weird aversion to cross gen games. Hell some PSN arcade games that were made for the PS3 and also had a PS4 version, were made available to us for FREE on the PS4 if we bought them on the PS3; I think the label they established for that was cross buy or something like that.

Not sure what is the issue here? This strange obsession of writing off games that haven't released just because its not exclusive to new fancy hardware you have purchased is just insane in my opinion.

Last week i played through God of War 3 remastered on PS4 again. A game developed for PS3 and i had a great time. Maybe focus on having fun while playing games and let development of games to people who know what they are doing.

I’m calling it now. Cross generation games will not end until companies feel that no more noticeable money can be made on last generation consoles. So I’m thinking around 2024 and maybe beyond generously speaking.

I think Forza Horizon has shown that you can make cross gen games while using near photorealistic assets. If Sony wants to release Factions and GoT as $50 standalone expansions then they need to do what Forza is doing and completely redo visuals at the very least.

If they do what they did with Miles, it's not going to go over well now that expectations for cross gen games have been set. Lets see what they end up doing.

If they going to completely redo everything then they would make a proper sequel. Forza Horizon 5 is a proper sequel. I think your expecting something that will obviously won't happen. The expectation had already been se twith Miles Morales with what we will get with a Ghost of Tsushima Standalone Expansion which is basically the same game using the same engine and next gen version having minor improvements like RT, 60FPS mode and more NPCs onscreen

Zero concern. Sony has showed us they're capable of making back to back blockbuster hits. If the game is good, the game is good.

I know everyone wants to see these new consoles maxed out, but we never really see that until the second half of a generation anyways.

God of War 2, The Last of Us, The Last of Us 2 all came out at the tail end of their gens. And, all of these games were the best looking titles on their respective platforms.

Either way, I'm positive that God of War Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7 will look unreal despite being cross gen titles.

All that incredible SSD power is gonna be used for... reducing loading times. What a waste. And if both Sony and MS stick to mostly cross-gen, third party devs will do it too. More games built for Jaguar CPUs and stone age HDDs. Big oof.

Lets assume they all get delayed to 2023. At least they are aiming for 2022 releases for NEXT GEN only titles. Sony is aiming for 2022 for their cross gen titles. So when does sony actually release next gen titles from their studios?

I have said this before but this July 8th conference better be the best damn conference of all time with at least half a dozen next gen only games slated for release in late 2022 and 2023.

Microsoft went far into the future with their announcements with Avowed, Everwild, Fable and etc. Yes they are next gen only but they are far off.

Sony was aiming for Gran Turismo 7 and God of War to come out this year. They have now been delayed till next year. Sony has provided a mix of cross gen and next gen only games with Ratchet and Clank, Returnal and Demons Souls being next gen only and Sackboy, Miles Morales being cross gen. You expect half a dozen next gen games to be announced in this conference is delusional. If you have any insight of Sony studios you would already they are all busy.

Guerilla - Horizon Forbidden West
Naughty Dog - Last of Us Factions 2
Sucker Punch - Ghost of Ikishima
Santa Monica - God of War Ragnarok
Polyphony - Gran Turismo 7

A tiny bit of research will show you it would be impossible to have half a dozen Sony Studios announce their next gen only games in one event. Unless you count smaller games from Indies or mid sized teams. Or 3rd party moneyhat time exclusives. You have to also bare in mind the timing of releases, last year Sony had Ghost of Tsushima, Last of Us 2 and etc. Microsoft should be more ready as they had less games begin released than Sony so their studios should be well into their game production in comparison to Sony. If you would like Sony to do super early teasers for example Naughty Dog announcing a new IP for 2023/2024, Barlogs new IP for 2023/2024 and etc I guess that's a way to aim for next gen only games being announced.

So far Sony have had Ratchet and Clank, Returnal, Demons Souls and Forsaken aiming 2022 as next gen only games. Microsoft will release their first next gen only game with Flight Simulator. Yes maybe they have announced more but it's not about announcing its about releasing the games. You can announce 10 games and only release 2 in the end in the same timeframe another company announced 3 games and releases all 3.

PS Studios - Astro's Playroom 2020 (released)
PS Studios - Demon's Souls 2020 (released)
PS Studios - Destruction Allstars 2021 (released)
PS Studios - Returnal 2021 (released)
PS Studios - R&C 2021 (released)

None of what you've listed have released (Except the old game/sim FS) and most of them are very late 2022 or 2023 games. Flight Simulator? More like a nice tech demo that is irrelevant to the actual gamers.

You call FS2020 an irrelevant tech demo yet you have no problem listing a controller tech demo for PS5. Double standards much?

Microsoft FINALLY started to heavily invest in big budget games. And they do the right thing to give devs freedom of exotic ambitions never seen before on a new hardware.

It's better later than never situation.

Microsoft doing the exact same thing: supporting all their generations. But without sacrificing the progress. How? Cloud.

One S owners will able to play Starfield, Avowed, Hellblade and Fable on XCloud day one.

Noone gets left behind. Especially during this chip shortage.
But also game design takes a step forward by locking all these games to next gen.

Win win scenario.

Meanwhile PS now still runs Fat ps4s.

Im not even talking about giving ps4 audience access to next gen games via cloud.

That's why Sony is doing it. They don't have the cloud infrastructure ready. Meanwhile ps5 is hard af to get.

So they need big audience to buy their games. so they went with only possible solution: limit their flagship titles to 2011 jaguar cores once again.

There's a lot about what MS is doing, that even if you don't like it, you can definitely respect it.

I kinda think Sony has to respond to at least some of what they're doing.

I really hope they redesign the level/asset streaming for the PS5 versions. Like, instead of lifting up a block or walking sideways through a crack in a wall while it streams from the HDD, you can just walk over there or break down a wall.

Likewise, I don't think we're getting flying mounts in Horizon Forbidden West because of this. Would be a cool PS5-only feature though.

I think you completely misread my post. I'm not expecting 6 next gen exclusives from Sony first party at the conference, i am saying they better have that many at the show if they want to have some next gen games ready by 2022 and 2023.

And yes, I am aware of their first party schedule. that's literally my point. Everyone keeps telling me that Sony first party will have next gen games coming out soon and I am like who? That's literally the topic of this thread. If all these studios are busy making cross gen games in 2021 and 2022 who is making next gen only games for them and when will they come out???

You didn't play that one, so how about you watch a playthrough about that hours long free "game"? Youtube is free.

I wouldn't bother. They bring up double standards, while they doing same thing themselves:

Yes.

I only ever play the campaign anyway and unlike little 10 hour games with no replay value at $70, I replay all the Halo games many, many times since the gameplay is always so much fun and with Halo I don't have to pay the $10 next gen tax.

You made up a completely guessed at list of cross gen games then literally asked for "concerns"?

Why don't you just wait and see what gets announced. We already have three PS5 only, completely "next-gen" (current-sen?) games that are obviously not possible on older systems, and one of which is a ridiculously high new benchmark in many ways.

And you are out here asking for people's "concerns" while also touting MS software when they have released nothing yet? And then to tout Forza Horizon which was demoed on PC of all things (XSX is 4k 30 at high quality mode as we all know after the fact).

Do you think Sony just had three PS5 exclusives planned for the first few months and now have nothing coming? Look at Sony's decade's long history. Do you honestly think that's what is going to happen. Are you truly concerned.

This makes no sense to me. This again, feels like vague astroturfing.

Well horizon, death stranding directors cut, ghost expansion and factions make perfect sense.

GT7 I don't personally think makes sense and gow I was selfishly hoping wouldn't be but I understand why if they started development years ago and originally planned it for this year.
Imagine if they they had hired kojima to do a sequel to death stranding in 2019. By the end of 2022, we would've had a fully next gen game. Instead, we are getting cross gen dlc in 2021.

I don't know what they were thinking tbh.

So now you guys are at a point where you praise MS for not releasing any games at all in the release window because they will be next-gen only in 2023+? LMAO how low can you go?

Zero games = better than cross-gen? Flight Simulator came out last gen FYI.

So true:

Microsoft originally announced Microsoft Flight Simulator as an Xbox One title, before quietly removing references to the Xbox One launch in December.

Dude, if santa monica and guerrilla release their big heavy hitters in 2021-2022, do you think that they can make gow 3 or horizon 3 (or gt8) in 1-2 years? think again.

Slimy was pretty clear in his OP about what the team are doing right now, sure they can have secondary projects, but the big hitters on ps5 only are years and years away.
Do you think they're working on one game at a time? Just because they're potentially new IP doesn't mean they're not heavy hitters.

All of your shit is based on assumptions and your own guesses. You're drowning yourself in your own depression about the situation. Who knows Kojima may have a next-gen only game planned or even in production for PS5. Developers can walk and chew gum at the same time.

We already know Santa Monica is working on more than one game.

Again, so much "concern" over the company that is dominating sales with plenty of happy customers. They have plenty of software coming.

There is absolutely a false narrative trying to be pushed here. Get over it people. These are video games. Go buy them all and quit acting like such weenies. Again these platform-only people wars are for babies. I don't give a :lollipop_poop: about what your favorite is. I am thrilled that that platform is your favorite.

It's the most technologically complex game in the industry rn.

Redfall, FlighSim, Starfield and Motorsport 8 is 2022 and earlier.

But "2023+" narrative is so comfortable to use, right?

STANDALONE SHORTER GAMES ARE NOT EXPANSIONS.
STANDALONE SHORTER GAMES ARE NOT DLC.
STANDALONE SHORTER GAMES ARE STANDALONE SHORTER GAMES.

Demon's Souls, Astro's Playroom, Returnal or Ratchet are PS5 only. So the rumored new GoT game, TLOU factions, Death Stranding Director's Cut and any other upcoming Sony games can be PS5 only too. But since there's over 80 million players playing PS4 every month it would be a very retarded idea to stop releasing games on PS4.

In fact Death Stranding Director's Cut has been rated as PS5 only standalone game, so we know it isn't crossgen and that it's standalone.

The TLOU factions evolved from being the TLOU2MP into a separate, standalone game. It isn't an expansion/DLC, we don't know its platforms but I agree that being a MP game they will want to have the bigger userbase possible so it's likely to be a crossgen+crossplay game.

The GoT rumor is about a new, separate shorter game, not a DLC. So it can be PS4 only like GoT, it can be PS5 only or crossgen.

Lie about what? this is a forum dude, if you don't like anything outside of people fanboying for sony in a topic created to discuss this type of stuff then stay away from the topic or open a topic yourself where you can praise them all you want.

I bought a ps5 and every sony exclusive available until now at day one, sony already had my money in spades, i can talk shit about what i don't like about them all the fuck i want, with all due respect.

I don't exclude anything, but i'm not gonna say sorry because i care about 2 (or more) famous and beloved IPs against something that we don't if it's even real or good to begin with, sony has to show every card in his hands in their next big event, for now we can only speculate about what we know for sure, and the sure thing is that we are not gonna see a proper ps5 only horizon\gow\gt game until 2025 at best.

From games like Redfall, Starfield, Motorsport 8, Everwild, Fable, Contraband, Hellblade 2 and so on we only saw a CG so it's hard to bet when are they going to be released.

Redfall and Starfield have been announced as 2022 games, let's hope it's true. Regarding Forza 8, as I remember they didn't reveal its year. But MS said all their Xbox Series games published in the first couple of years or so will be crossgen, so since Motorsport 8 isn't crossgen is likely to be a late 2022 or beyond game.

If they release in 2022 then it would go against what Phil promised to his customers about no need to upgrade for 2 years. Phil would never do such a thing. This is a deep betrayal you should be pissed instead of bending over.

As a person with a ps5 who had issues with these games that seemed to be tied to hardware its a bit annoying. I'd rather they focus on next gen beyond a resolution bump and frame rate bump. It's nice but I want to start seeing how games that target these platforms can separate themselves from last gen.

Honestly... who cares?

They made incredible games on PS4 and they will still keep making incredible games regardless if it's crossgen or not.
Well, this thread went the way I expected it do. Not to single any one out, CheeseCake CheeseCake , but this post is as good as any to point to: when Microsoft announced they were doing it, apparently everyone cared. We can go back to those threads here to see. It's amazing to me how the narrative changed so quickly from "We believe in generations!" to "Who cares?".

2020 Launch
Demons Souls (Next Gen Only)
Miles Morales
Sackboy

2021
Destruction Allstars (Next Gen Only)
Returnal (Next Gen Only)
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart (Next Gen Only)
Deathloop (Next Gen Only)
Kena
Ghost of Ikishima

2022
Horizon Forbiden West
God of War Ragnarok
Last of Us Factions
Gran Turismo 7
Ghostwire Tokyo (Next Gen Only)
Last of Us Remake (Next Gen Only)
Forsaken (Next Gen Only)
PSVR2 Launch Games (Next Gen Only)

Sony has had a comsistent amount of games coming out every single year. And since the launch of PS5 they have had a mix of cross gen and next gen only games and this will most likely continue into 2022. It would not make sense for Sony to have so many first party games in a single year as then they would overcrowd their releases and competing with themselves. I can see a few more smaller next gen only games coming out next year similar to Returnal and Destruction Allstars. Microsoft has announced games way more far out because they needed to as they have had so many bad years in terms of first party support. To answer your question I don't think you will have more than a few next gen only games in 2022 as it would be pointless with so many games already coming in 2022. I think it's in 2023 when we start seeing alot more next gen only games from Sony. Their teams have expanded you have a 2nd Guerilla Games team, partnerships with other studios, expansion of Team Asobi, Barlogs game and etc. But unlike Microsoft you won't get 2023 games announced now. In the end it's not about promises it's about delivering which Sony has done for the last few years.

It makes sense really, it's still a very active console and likely will be for a couple of years or so. They're all studios that make top class games that are also massive sellers. Perhaps it would be different if they only sold half as many consoles as they do or if games sales numbers weren't usually so high for them but that's not the way it is, there seems to be an almost endless stream of people who want to play their games.
I've said it before but I would have been happy if they moved to PS5 only games the day it was released but there are millions of people who still want to play games on their PS4 or buy PS4s so it makes perfect sense for them to continue releasing PS4 games while the market dictates that they should. It does also fund their future games when it makes sense for them to move away from PS4 hardware and software.

Not a fan of this. If we get God of War (for example) two years into the gen and it is cross gen that just means we have to wait another 4+ years for a full PS5 GoW. At that point maybe they develop that as PS6/PS5 cross gen.

Not Naughty Dog. They absolutely don't do that

Not Naughty Dog too.
Unless the game they are talking about is the Factions expansion.

I really wanted Naughty Dog to show us what they can do sooner rather than later.

Please let PSX actually have a PS5 only first party game, even if they say its only coming out Holiday 2022.
<---Prays stock is in order so he can actually try said nextgen games.,
Yeah Naughty Dog is working on a next gen exclusive. Factions doesn't count.

I believe many of Sony's studios have two teams at least. I know Naughty Dog has two, Sony Santa Monica has at least two, and Guerrilla games also has two teams. I don't know about Sucker Punch though.

I think is not the cross-gen games that bother people, is the games specifically that makes people upset. Sony Santa Monica could announce a new game (whether new IP or not) exclusive to PS5 taking advantage of the hardware as much as possible, and people will still be upset that GOW is going to be cross gen. Why? because people wanted to see what a next gen GOW would be.

Then, let's be realistic: Horizon Forbidden West and GOW had no chance to be next gen (although GOW was more of a conscious decision than a timing one).

Sucker Punch is going to take years to release a new game since they just finished GoT not so long ago, and if they are working on an expansion, then there's no chance anyways but to wait.

Naughty Dog is in the same boat as Sucker Punch. I think they do have another team but who knows what they are working on. Hopefully a new IP.

Guerrilla Games has two teams right? So the other one is probably starting to work on a new game which will likely take years

KojiPro, who knows where they will go next? PS Exclusive? Xbox Exclusive? I think their next game will be next gen, though, but it will also take years.

Polyphony Digital: who cares what they do? They release one game every few centuries.

In fact, thinking about it, the PS5 could've launch this year with the games that have been released as launch, and have a non-stop influx of games into next year with Horizon Forbidden West, God of War, Gran Turismo, etc all of them in the first 6 months or so. If you are having trouble finding a PS5 right now, I couldn't even imagine how hard it would be if that was the case.

EDIT: Also, let's be optimistic about new projects and new IPs that Sony will announce. Horizon, TLOU and GOT were all new IPs that became huge. Maybe this gen Sony will give us some more, and we are here complaining about cross-gen games.

You are going short circuit when MS releases a Next Gen Only game next year while Sony does cross gen huh?

Doubt it, but we'll see. Microsoft in January of 2020 told us that it was all about cross-gen for several years and that its expertise in scaling would erase any doubts of its approach to generations.

Then Halo took a dump and it was all, "WHOA, delete, delete, remove all Xbox One logos, no more talk of cross-gen, delete!"

So now in 2021, you really think Microsoft totally changed everything?

All those games that last year were planned as being part of Microsoft's cross-gen gameplan, now we think they're full-on next-gen games brand new, not-at-all-"cross-gen engines"? And they're all going to blow past everything Sony has been releasing steadily for the past year, both cross-gen and exclusive, because MS is no longer a cross-gen company (except for the cross-gen games it does release)? And despite having shipped zero next-gen games exclusive as of today, we think that MS are the true masters of next-gen-exclusivity because they put an "Optimized for Xbox Series X" on their trailers and that means they're serious when they say, "Games built using the Xbox Series X|S development kit are designed to take advantage of the unique capabilities of the Xbox Series X|S", while Sony just announcing its cross-gen ports (after showing the actual games being played, in all cases so far except for GoW which has yet to be shown, so after gamers have had a chance to see the product in motion and debate its "next-gen'itiveness") means that they're all PS4+ games because who would ever build games on a next-gen system and port down when they could build for those old Jaguar cores and scale up (despite MS saying that that's what they're doing for all their games, including its cross-gen games) because their boss made a stupid "We believe in generations" comment? Really, we are so sure that these two companies are miles and miles apart and Sony is about to be blown off the map by the next-gen juggernaut that is Microsoft despite the fact that, game for game of everything we have seen, they are in practically the same boat of progress in 2021 game development and the only difference is that one shipped essentially every new game we have to talk about on these new consoles and the other has contributed a really nicely-done DLC and some remasters, and are we doubly-sure about this when the Next Gen Only company that hasn't shipped anything next gen only has already showed off its 2021-2022 slate at E3 and had so little to show that it had to bookend the opening and closing of the show with the works of the major publisher it bought to bolster its library while still not getting anything Next Gen Only out until a year from now?

...I mean, I don't know, maybe. Seems like naw tho. Be cool if they did, but I don't know.

I think they're both just making games as best they can and they're not that far apart. We are seeing the state of game development in 2021, and we have caught glimpses of what it looks like to plan for a 2022/2023 game, and they look a little different and better but they also look like they're nowhere near ready to bring to market because, unlike in past generations, the software was not in any state ready to be rushed for launch.

None of what you've listed have released (Except the old game/sim FS) and most of them are very late 2022 or 2023 games. Flight Simulator? More like a nice tech demo that is irrelevant to the actual gamers.
Hey, man, whoa, back off... We can have our favorites in the console war and it's fun to rap-battle the games, but don't be cursing the good name of Flight Simulator. Asobo Studio is good people, and any platform that enjoys a work like Flight Sim is lucky to have it. That boy stays gold!

As a PS5 owner it sucks, but if I was still on PS4 I'd be glad for cross gen. Sony should lower the price of PS4 at this point, so it can perhaps have a very long life like the PS2, but not with more cross gen, hopefully.

What the hell is this wall of text for? I stopped reading halfway through because I have no idea who you are talking to. I know what games are cross gen and what games aren’t (unless MS lied to us which is possible). Sony is the one backtracking right now, there is no debate about that.

Nah, thats a reach bud.

Ghost expansion is very likely to be cross plat as why the fuck would they make an expansion ONLY on PS5? Death Stranding Directors Cut also makes sense on PS4 and PS5 as shit its literally a PS4 game and same with Fractions.

This is just low hanging fruit man. The thing you are talking about isn't shocking, its to be expected as those are fucking PS4 games in the first place.
