And that's a good thing because gaming is a business or something.
The moment we lose that voice, is the moment those companies win.

This is what will happen, if we dont act fast. (almost posted wrong video).

As for Sony wanting money, I'm of two minds, mostly due to ignorance. How do servers and networks work for cross play? If it costs the market leader more to have cross play because more "foreign" systems are tapping into their servers then I could see an argument for it. That being said, how much does that actually cost? Do they actually host more than they normally would? Does the added value increase their revenue as a result? I don't know any of this but would like to before deciding one way or another.

As far as I know, many/most game servers are hosted by the publishers and not Sony/MS. I don't know if the publishers get a cut of the profit (I doubt it) but Sony/MS servers mostly only handle things like authentication before sending you off to the publisher's servers.

It's why I've never liked the idea of paying for online multiplayer. The promise was that it paid for server uptime but I've seen too many games get taken offline to really believe that.

Edit: I'll still be happy to see cross-play in games. Especially since, you know, I'm paying for it.

Why do we put so much credence in all these suits' words? None of them really play games, and they're all just saying whatever they need to in order to sell you their products. Like, are we surprised Sony is flip flopping on cross play? Do we really expect suits to be honest and genuine people with integrity? Of course not.

Its complete clown shit how people care about what these guys have to say. This applies to Microsoft's execs too with their whole "we care about gamers" bullshit. None of this shit matters and it just fuels stupid console wars bullshit.

Lets focus on the games and not what these execs have to say (unless its an announcement, of course).

When approximately 50% of Fortnite sales were on PS4 and they still insisted that they get a cut to cover the costs that they lost.

https://www.pushsquare.com/news/202...ercent_of_fortnites_revenue_is_on_playstation

They can market “For the Gamers” as much as they want, but the fact of the matter is that it is slowing down cross play between consoles which is more consumer friendly. In the end, it’s a plastic box that sits next to your TV and it should be able to connect to other TV connected plastic boxes in the world.

Says Sony, the sole reason why we don't have crossplay between all three consoles and Game Pass available to the entire playstation fanbase.

Crossplay makes sense. Cross-buy makes zero sense.
Sony is making it sound like you can’t have one without the other, but Nintendo has proven that they can get it to work with Rocket League. I buy and use a Nintendo related item on Switch, and it looks like a generic item to those on competing platforms.

Sony could have done this, but both Kratos and Aloy are playable in Fortnite on all platforms.

It really seems to me that it is an argument of convenience and is very inconsistent with their wording to the public.

EXACTLY! Yet most people here and people that do podcast don't seem to know this or care about this fact.

Why would anybody care about that "fact" unless you're a video game historian? Xbox wants crossplay now, Sony doesn't, if that changes in the future we can be mad at Xbox then.

(The reason I put fact in quotes is because I've never seen proof Playstation was in favor of crossplay with Xbox as opposed to just PC, but even if they did it's irrelevant today)

Do PlayStation diehards like Crossplay Now that Papa says it’s good?
I used to not care about this till my kids started to play on PC, switch, and PS4 while I'm on ps5.

It is just such an awesome thing to get to do cross play. I'm converted.

I think all games should implement crossplay and cross-save.
Nothing changed. They still want to get paid for Crossplay. Greedy cunts.
No need to pay them for using crossplay unless there's a big difference against them regarding the game's userbase and revenue per platform.

Cases like a game having 80% of their players on PS4 (so generating costs for Sony regarding matchaking+trophies+chat+etc server costs, customer support costs, etc) but only generating 10% of the game's DLC & IAP revenue in PS4.

It isn't greed, it's to keep their ass safe making sure prices are the same in all platforms etc.

That's the sole reason Final Fantasy XIV never came to Xbox.
Maybe the reason of why this and many other JRPG, online or not, are PS exclusive is because a huge chunk of their sales are made in Japan and Xbox as an almost non-existant userbase there and Sony has a good one.

Until Sony drops their reimbursement requirements that they force onto Developers and Publishers, I don't believe a word of Sony liking cross-play.
What are you talking about? I had an issue with a season pass I bought but wasn't activated. They tried to solve it with different actions on my side and their side and didn't work, so they offered a refund. That day, the game got a new game update and fixed the issue. I told them the refund wasn't needed because the issue was already fixed, but they refunded me anyways. So I kept the season pass and got the money to buy something else.

Yeah I agree. It's protecting their 30% cut instead of people buying it directly from e.g. Epic.

This is how Apple should have potentially structured it instead off completely kicking a game off their system. Although there could be more too it still.

Nothing you've written has anything to do with my post. Quoted the wrong person?

Not surprisingly, I remember seeing a IGN video some time ago about PS4 and Xbox one generation where somehow they decided to lump on Sony’s conservative view on cross play as someone that was super negative…and something that make all Xbox one faults seem null ahaha.

I wouldn’t want to be working on the gaming industry! We have gaming journalists with their crazy assumptions then fanboys fighting eachother… it’s hard to keep in touch with what gamers truly want.

Bear in mind that papa Sony wanted to do cross play back in the Xbox 360 days and Xbox stopped that from happening. Of course at that time the Xbox 360 had its fat foot on the PS3's neck when it came roaring out the gates and setting the sales charts on fire. A time when Xbox was all too happy to share Xbox sales stats via their PR mouthpiece in Aaron Greenberg. Now the situation is reversed.

Keep this in mind when trying to label one corporation the enemy over the other. Both of them are looking to one up each other when they get the chance. It's all business in the end.

Third party company: Hey Sony, we want to do cross play, you good?

Sony: Nope

Third party company: Why not?

Sony: Not until you sign this NDA where you agree to pay us top up revenue based on a magic formula of mtx ratios, where Sony legal is allowed to audit your books for revenue per system, and you pay us what the formula spits out

Third party company: Ok, we agree to it

Sony: Permission granted! We change our minds. Cross play is the best! Sign here.

Corporations aren't your friends.

Surprised by how many replies sound very personal about this very corporate decision to play dumb and say they're totally for this thing.

Just look at Pride Month for goodness sake.

Market leader lies and get caught and now doing damage control.
They’ve been allowing cross platform play and to my knowledge are still charging so what’s the damage control? Most games that feasibly can offer cross platform play do. I’m not defending Sony here. They got blow back from their players and responded in a way that made sense to them. In what other industry does the market leader enable a feature that makes buying their competitors product easier for the consumer?

I'm just glad they don't like it so much they force us to use cross play. PlayStation only lobbies is low key the greatest feature of that game.

Why is this such a bad thing to some of you guys? Yall realize that gaming is a business, right?

They already charge people for playing other companies online games, over those companies server,s 50m people are giving them free money they didn't work for, and yet they still want more, like how much more greedy can you get?

Cause the main thing that a consumer should be worried about is their enjoyment of the product* and not the business reasons of the producers. Not having a well functioning cross-play leads to more cons than pro's.

*Slightly oversimplified

How can it be anti-consumer to none if their consumers? I would rather keep the ecosystem clean from intruders and potential hacks and cheats that I can't easily monitor.
If history has shown us anything then it's that other companies security teams should worry about Sony, not the other way around

I've been around for long enough to have an idea of for how long playstation consoles supported crossplay with PC, and moreso than xbox consoles.

What a bizarro world where people now shout about Sony being completely anti-crossplay as if it's a complete novelty to them and praise Microsoft as if they've always been for crossplay.

Yeah, Sony lies LOL
