Sonic Generations deserves props because it got worse as you got further into the game, mirroring the arc of the series.

Mania for the physics alone. I love generations but the physics feel palpably off in the 2D stages. Boost stages are their own thing.

Huh? I'd say it held up pretty well until Planet Wisp and Time Eater.
If we're going by Classic Sonic alone, then Mania wins comfortably. The revisits in Mania just feel better, and push the boat out when it comes to adding new elements.
Classic visiting the Modern Stages was cool though. Modern Sonic's take on the classic stages were really great, particularly Sky Sanctuary.
