I think some of the best experiences to be found in mobile gaming are ports (albeit surprisingly decent ports) of other hardware. And these ports usually retail for fractions of the cost of the original game releases, with some being really faithful copies of their originals. Add in any of the many controllers compatible with mobile devices and you get a surprisingly decent mobile experience.
Note: Not all of these are ports, some are designed for mobile from the ground up

Some examples below:

Fortnite (Free - iOS and Android, however, not sourced on iOS/the app store, get it from epicgames.com)

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft (Free - iOS and Android)

Football Manager 2021 Touch ($19.99, iOS and Android)

Max Payne Mobile ($2.99 - iOS and Android)

Knights of the Old Republic 2 ($9.99 - iOS and Android)

Dead Cells ($8.99 - iOS and Android)

Gwent (Free - iOS and Android)

PUBG Mobile (Free - iOS and Android)

Call of Duty Mobile (Free - iOS and Android)

XCOM: Enemy Within ($4.99 - iOS and Android)

GRID Autosport ($9.99 - iOS and Android) (Exaggerated claim in the second image but, eh)

Banner Saga 2 ($9.99 - iOS and Android)

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night ($2.99 - iOS and Android)

Cultist Simulator ($2.99 - iOS and Android)

This War of Mine ($13.99 - iOS and Android)

Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition ($9.99 - iOS and Android)

Minecraft - Pocket Edition ($7.49 - Android, $6.99 - iOS)

Rockstar Collection (iOS and Android)

GTA III ($4.99)

San Andreas ($6.99)

Vice City (4.99)

Chinatown Wars (4.99)

Liberty City Stories (6.99)

Bully: Anniversary Edition(6.99)

A long haul flight from wherever you are.

*(If you also have a bluetooth controller)

I mean we really should be passed the point that old big box consoles can be out performed by small more powerful mobile devices and be impressed by that. Look it's a "Real"console game in your hand!!!

Bully Anniversary is actually far better than the crappy Scholarship Edition for consoles and PC.

Unfortunately the time of AAA mobile games (most of them by Gameloft) is over since.. 2015 at least.

Nowadays 99.9% of mobile games are VERY low quality cash grabs.

Meh, I think you're looking at this from a different perspective. Don't look at the technical achievement aspect of it (even though it's still amazing).

Think of the fact that even though touch controls in mobile games has always been shit, and these games are these weird half-enjoyable, in-between-design ports, they're still objectively better in almost every way than the majority of mobile games.

I mean, every thread about mobile games usually involves someone asking for good ones as, I think we can all agree, 90% of them are crap.
Well, here they are.
