Opinion So Dragon Quest XI S is pretty good

I loved DQXI and think it's a fantastic game, but a lot of my enjoyment was to do with not just the fine work of the developers but me changing my gameplay approach after DQVIII.

I liked DQVIII, but almost killed myself with the unbearably tedious grinding of fighting every single enemy in the game. I kind of decided to never play a DQ again after that trauma, it was really monotonous. But DQXI kept getting rave reviews and I eventually caved - however I took an approach where I avoided as many fights as possible, running past enemies I'd already seen. This cut down on the boring battles and also made the boss fights way more tactical and interesting, since I was a bit under-leveled. I had a great time!

Finish the game then read

The story DQ11 pre-dates all of DQ games, the ending shows the 1st DQ hero as a kid

DQ11 is indeed great but most of the 'S' stuff is whatever. The proper soundtrack is great but should've been there from the start. Also, can't do the monotonous as fuck old school DQ mode. Especially after bumping battle speed to maximum in the 3d mode.

My biggest gripe with the game is the nothing of a character that is the Luminary. Being silent in such a long game where everyone else is voiced was a bad decision. Luckily everyone else makes up for him.

Was also a bit irritated that Jade had basically no further development post act 1. She's hot, is forced into an evil bunny suit and then can tap into that power after being freed. Epic stuff.

I think it's a great game, but the story was overall quite bad. There are a few good vignettes (Lonalulu springs to mind) but mostly forgettable

I always put my characters to be controlled by the AI, except for the MC or when facing strong enemies, and it makes the whole thing a lot more streamlined.

I named my character “my wiener” and it made the dialog a lot more interesting.

“my wiener is stuck inside a snowman and can’t move!”

I think it's great.. but only like 90% perfect. I really need armor/clothes that change your appearance in every slot like an mmorpg!

I played the game very slowly for a whole year for about 400 hours and 50+ of that was spent playing the casino while drinking beer and watching 80s movies, I loved the casino! I hit the jackpot on slots twice.. ya just gotta keep playing until you hit metal mode.

I enjoyed it. there is a section about 3/4 of the way through that is a few hours long that took me a couple times of putting the game down to finish. I remember being disappointed because until then it was one my favorites overall.

I had a hard time getting into it. Not sure why. It seems very competent. One thing that stood out was the types of monsters I was fighting ... essentially piles of jello or poo or something ... idk the monsters were not scary or threatening, or even respectable IMO. That said I didn't get probably even 1/3 through the game so I'm sure I missed the more epic stuff. Just felt bland and couldn't hold my interest

So uh...
In Act 3, some fire breathing bird at Cobblestone Tor is wiping my party. I've been leveling a lot, but I'm wondering if I need to try using sleep/confusion?
