On Monday, Bengt Holmström of MIT and Oliver Hart of Harvard were announced as the joint winners of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Economics (for work on contact theory and how to evaluate whether things should be government-run or privately owned).

But eagle-eyed Simpsons fans were not surprised. Milhouse Van Houten predicted the win (his pick is to the right of Martin's circled red pick) in the 2010 Simpsons season premiere via a Nobel Prize betting pool he was in with Lisa Simpson, Martin Prince and Database (yes, they really were in a Nobel pool).

The episode’s plot revolves around Krusty the Clown being scammed into thinking he won the Nobel Peace Prize so he’ll travel to Europe, where he is arrested and tried by the International Court of Justice for deplorable behavior. Bart and Homer Simpson save him by “proving” that Krusty helped win the release of Nelson Mandela (though he really just wanted a potato chip).

Someone please explain to me how The Simpsons predicting Jagdish Bhagwati would win the Economics prize in 2010 doubles as a prediction for Bengt Holmström in 2016.

Oh, they just happened to make Milhouse pick a name for 2010 that happens to match the 2016 result, despite no attempt at bridging that logic gap at all.

Is Oliver Williamson a joke under Martin's column because he is an infamous economist not a physics professor (won Nobel in 2009).

There is no explanation.

That's cool and all but it just means the writers were aware of many people who might be in the running for a prize. They wrote 20 names, and we're counting this as a "hit" even though the date is off, so therefore any of these names being the winner in the foreseeable future would also count as a hit. It would be more remarkable if they didn't get any right.

Feringa also co-won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry this year with Stoddart and Sauvage for their work in the design and synthesis of molecular machines.
