Different tastes I guess, and you have to realize that very few people actually care for the technical side of things, even with the more powerful consoles frame rates and graphics are still niche interests.
Thats bs, people on other markets care

DQXI is a different story. They had no choice than releasing it on 3DS as well, otherwise it would have never sold well on the limited PS4 installed base.

There are more than 17 million Switch in Japan, probably 20-21 million by the time Dragon Quest XII releases. You can expect 4 million copies sold ( without digital ), easy. They don't need the PS5.
That was the scariest part, 3DS version was just an afterthought by SQE after realizing they won't sell many copies on a tiny PS4 userbase.

It could happen again for DQ12

Best Switch weeks (famitsu)

Week 12 2020 (ACNH launch): 392.576
Week 10 2017 (switch launch): 330.637
Week 1 2021 (Sony give up): 312.121
Week 52 2017 (Christmas): 303.504
Off to a great start, MHR launch week should be able to pull a respectable sales number.

PS4 shipments as of sept is 113M.
PS4 could be at 120M mark already.
PS4 sales in Japan is 9.3M round it of to 9.5M.
111.5M w/o Japan
Switch shipments as of sept is 68.3M
Possibly at 80-82M already
Japan - 17.7m round it off to 18M.
64M w/o Japan.

Japan is a very important market for Nintendo. 1/4 of it’s sales are coming from Japan while for Sony it is a small portion. PS4 will still be successful without Japan while we cannot say that for Nintendo.

It's pretty amazing that the Quarter was down only by a little over 600K physical sales among the Top 20. This pretty much means that YOY in the last quarter Switch was either flat or slightly up without a game that could sale even 1/2 of what Sword / Shield achieved last holiday in terms of overall software sales. As there were at least 15 titles that sold in the ballpark of 30-50K in the last three months
Overall there were 4 titles surpassing 400K, 5 titles surpassing 300K, 8 titles that surpassed 200K & 15 titles that surpassed 100K

This is a huge momentum heading into 2021. Especially when we consider that Switch had no titles that launch to surpass 100K sold before New Horizon launched at the end of the quarter in 2020 - compare that to Bowser's Fury, Olive Town & Bravely Default 2 as well as a couple of other smaller titles that can surpass 100K.

  • YoY there is 170K growth in the Top 20, likely a similar growth outside of the Top 20 as January is becoming another strong month for Nintendo in Japan
  • This is mainly due to the anemic sales of the PlayStation ecosystem which five years ago enjoyed a much stronger January period compared to now
  • Last year there was basically no game to push hardware until New Horizon launched at the end of the quarter
  • Bowsers Fury, Olive Town & Bravely Default 2 will definitely help the Switch maintain momentum until Monster Hunter Rise launches
  • Ring Fit Adventure also is likely to get a higher shipment for Q1 compared to Q1 2020, when the game was very difficult to buy due to COVID
  • New Horizon and Momotaro will be the other 2020 games that will continue to have huge sales in 2021

It's true that Japan is an important market for Nintendo and one in which is performing well contrary of Sony.
It should be noted that Switch sales outside Japan are excellent too.
To give you an idea, in US NSW has sold over 4 million more consoles than what PS4 did in the same time frame (launch month aligned).

Why are sales of a handheld being compared to home consoles?
Also Japan doesn't give a shit about home consoles anymore.

Vita flopped despite being a portable system.

Japan doesn't give a shit about Sony is more accurate since only 1 game that charted in the top 30 best selling games is playable on PS4.

Those PS5 numbers are abysmal.
I expect the likes of Capcom, Square Enix, Namco Bandai or Sega to bring more games on the Switch/Switch Pro in the next few years.

Dragon XII will be a Switch exclusive for sure. And all japanese centric games such as the Musou or Baseball games might end up on the Switch only as well.

PS4 is dead and the PS5 failed to launch in Japan. Why on Earth would you bring the next Dynasty Warriors on a Playstation platform ?

Only the franchises with big global success such as Resident Evil, Final Fantasy or Monster Hunter will still come to the PS5. But all those games selling mainly in Japan ? They will leave Playstation platforms now.
Those publishers focus on worldwide market and mobile. Switch is already part of their mobile lineup. So, there won't be any changes.

Again I'm referring to japanese centric titles. So mobile and worldwide market is not related to my point.

Thats bs, people on other markets care
Yeah, people really do care it's just that Xbox really screwed up their image back in 2013 where it has stuck with them ever since. That's why PlayStation still sells a lot. People who are general consumers that know a 1% of gaming news know that Xbox doesn't offer what PlayStation offers (Which is what one person who isn't a gamer who pays attention to gaming news told me about).

We're already seeing changes. Third parties who rarely supported Nintendo systems recently are now jumping on board (see Koei Tecmo for example) thanks to the strong hardware sales.

They are moving from making games for PS4 to making games for PS4 and Switch.

well honestly the videogame media can only take a path to get to what everyone has dreamed of for decades and decades ... a completely immersive world probably in vr. certainly among the 3 big players Nintendo is the one that pushes the technological side of video games the least. If it were for them things like the evolution of anti-aliasing ... of image reconstruction, new rendering methods such as "foveated rendering" and millions of other innovations there would be no reason to research them. and I honestly say it would have been a drama of unthinkable proportions. I would say that we only have to say thank you that Nintendo does not dominate the entire video game market so if you ask me among the three big players I find myself forced to say that Nintendo would be the one I could (suffering) give up because honestly the least innovative of the three (no their hardware is not innovative in the true sense of the word)
Depends on your interpretation of innovation, as for many the big two just make more powerful consoles that allow for better graphics, nothing really changes all that much, and I think Nintendo's release of the Switch was a shot in the arm for the video game industry, after all we do not need three players in the endless power race. ;)

No they do not, you are only getting the minority opinions on niche gaming sites, people in bubbles speaking to other people in similar bubbles.

If you were correct the take up of both the Ps4 Pro and Xbox One X would be much higher, as it is they remain very niche when compared to their standard consoles, believe it or not there are a lot of people that buy the core consoles and do not buy tonnes of games for them, they like video games but also have other interests.

Triple AAA? So that's AAAAAAAAA? A game like that must cost a fortune, no wonder Nintendo can't afford to produce something like that.

no. you are using 1 wrong example. the PS4 or Xbox One graphics were already light years ahead of the classic Nintendo graphics, while the difference between ps4 and ps4 pro are not so obvious for the masses. From the time of the Arcades and from the start of the home consoles and especially of the PCs we have developers and hardware makers competing to have the best graphics and the most incredible graphic effects...This does not mean that we must forget about the gameplay or the art direction where Nintendo is GREAT but one thing is certain the hardware that Nintendo produces is certainly limiting technological innovation and the software that is developed reflects this. But there's nothing surprising when you think the latest nintendo console has 390 gflops vs 12,100 gflops and 10.200 gflops respectively of xsx and ps5

And yet the games that'll have sold best at the end of this gen on those 1 billion teraflop machines, will be Fifa 21-25, Madden 21-25, Call of Duty 21-25, Assassins Creed 21-25, Minecraft & GTA5&6, most of which will have last gen ports and don't benefit at all from all those technical innovations.

The average consumer hasn't cared about graphics in well over a decade. They didn't pick the PS4 because it had better graphics, they picked it because of a great marketing push.

Well if you can't take the simple facts of the matter into account, then I guess the next best thing is to bury your head in the sand and believe whatever you want to. ;)

That’s why it’s such a pitty the available technology eats up so much developing time for graphics that the focus on gameplay appears to get lost. They lost me personally after the x iteration of the graphically improved version of the same old games from the 2000s.

Again the reasons of the core minority do not echo the wider markets, the PS4 sold well because it's marketing was spot on, and Microsoft dropped the ball by not catering enough for gamers last generation, the people that care for graphics and frame rates are very niche, although they do tend to shout the loudest.

If your reasoning was the correct the Switch would have not sold as well as it does, as it's low powered compared to the Ps4 and original X Box One.

You are confused, making the same games over and over but with better graphics is innovation. ;)

Not surprised, Animal crossing new horizons has sold around 30 million copies thus far, surprising considering it's not a triple AAA game with fancy graphics. ;)

Japan loves phone games so ofc a portable console will sell well over there.
