Just want to give the OP a quick thank you for putting this guide together! I’ve been loving my Series X but was still a bit nostalgic for some of the old N64 and GameCube games I used to play years ago. This was perfect and much simpler than I was expecting. I was up and running Ocarina of Time and Windwaker in no time.

yeah, Retroarch can be overwhelming at first glance, but once you get the hang of it it's not that hard

Feel like I have things setup nicely finally, some tweaks needed still for individual games but all I want is running nicely.

Enjoy using the Sony style XMB to load up and play Nintendo games on my Xbox.

My GameCube adventures have been more miss than hit. F-Zero doesn't boot, Wave Race freezes at the menu and Paper Mario freezes during the intro. Double Dash seems to work fine though. PS2 has treated me far better.

Appreciate the OP though, it's been a neat little toy.

F-Zero GX (at least the PAL version) should work... could be a settings issue or an issue with your ISO

EDIT: bender bender I uploaded a Dolphin folder that should work, and I will try F-Zero GX with this one myself and see if it works for me. if you use a super new dolphin folder you will have issues as Dolphin standalone is ahead of retroarch and especially this version of retroarch (which is 1 version behind)

this version should work > dolphin-emu.zip beim Filehorst - filehorst.de

EDIT2: yeah, with the Dolphin folder I linked and an NTSC-N ISO of F-Zero GX it works for me. although it does have stutters. I might look into fixing those but the game works
I didn't change any core settings for it and I run with Direct X11 (D3D11)

I am getting a lot of VFS not support errors with Arcade. Using the Mame Pack 0.78 on internal storage. Half of the games works and half get a VFS error.

Installed Retroarch on my Series S. I was under the impression that anything under four gig would load from a USB pen drive.

Tried Duckstation as no Bios needed. Found my roms on the USB but they wont boot, just errors?

What have I done wrong? I havent tinkered with anything, it's a clean install.

VFS? Are you using software renderer instead of DX?

Anyone know why the roms wont boot from USB?

Ps1 Calverz.
Ah ok. Iv yet to try duckstation. I personally use the psx rearmed or whatever it’s called core. Seems pretty good. Although the guys installation video recommends beetle HW. Try them and they should work fine.

Retroarch is great, but hard to setup for newbies, even tho its much improved from the early days, if ur serious about getting it work, jump on youtube and look for guides.

I only tried Duckstation as I thought that was the only one to work without Bios files, i'll try them though when I get back to mine.

Every game under 2 gigs load from USB, PSX included, they take longer to boot though.
The best core is duckstation, that's the one I use it cleans the graphics like no other core
Nope, wouldnt have it, just came up with an error. I've labeled my roms into seperate folders on the USB stick (Ps1, Ps2, Megadrive etc..)

No idea if thats why, i've never had an issue before.

Can i ask, why use the ancient 0.78 romset? It's from 2003. It was maintained back in the day for the original modded XBOX... Nowadays even cheap mobiles can handle the 0.139 romset (from 2010). SeriesX should be able to handle the current one just as easily as any PC.

For some reason after I create a config file for gamecube and play a game. When I close retroarch and then go back in and load the config file, everything becomes totally zoomed in on the menu. Anyone else get this and know how to fix?
Edit: figured it out. Needed to activate show advanced options.

Thats the set i've been using on every phone/tablet/handheld i've had to date, works perfect.
Every romset works perfect if you set it up correctly.

The best case scenario is to use the most modern one your device can handle. As MAME gets updated it becomes more accurate and a lot of bugs get fixed. 0.139 is a good place to start i guess (if you are aiming for handhelds) but it's still a decade old so if your device is powerful enough, it would be better to test a more recent one.

Good shout. I'll have a look around for an updated set.

Tried to update some retroarch cores but couldn't find the root folder in Xbox with all the stuff in it!

How should I update those cores?

you can't update cores on retail. you will need the dev-mode version to do that.

the cores are all relatively up to date tho and all the important onces are included.

Unfortunately you can’t on retail. Meaning you can’t add the plugins to n64 core. This means half the n64 games won’t run correctly as running off glide64

Aren't the Parallel plugins already included in the Mupen64pls-next core? If so, it should be just a matter of changing some core options.

There should be no benefits using old sets for performance reasons on SeriesX. So the most recent you can get, the better. Current one is 0.233.
Thanks for this. I'll have a look. I haven't done mame in ages.

Floppy disks are dead, long live floppy disks! 😁
Oldtimers, don’t miss out on ripping your old floppies to adf files and see them on the big TV on the latest gaming hardware! 👌

I downloaded the latest RA nightly cores and redirected the default cores directory from S to the Q directory in local state but it fails to load core. When I switched it back to the default S directory it still failed. So I updated the assets, database etc again and it worked.

Tomorrow I'll try the Q directory again and this time update assets, database etc then try loading a core see if it works.

Still no luck on F-Zero but it did fix my Paper Mario issues! Thank you!

Because it is small. The 0.139 I would have to trim down a lot. But it is not just new games, the same ones will have different roms build?

that is beyond weird... I did not change any settings (but I should have... using ubershaders helps a lot with the stutter) and used the exact folder as you see it in the download...

have you tried a different .iso? did you set Retroarch to "start in fullscreen" in the video settings? do you use "force Resolution on UWP"? I personally have all of these off, but I think it should work either way. or maybe it works for you if you turn them on.
also make sure to change all the Retroarch frintend settings, then sav your config file, and just to be sure quit out of retroarch and restart it and check if your settings have been saved.

I had issues in the past of my settings not saving correctly.

Have all those checked and "Allow Cores to Switch the Video Driver" set to Off. I'll try a different ISO.

Thousand Year Door has too many graphical glitches so I'll wait to play it until more updates come, if they come. I heard it also breaks towards the middle of the game, sadly.

I’m going to give a run at mame and neo geo with the latest 0.233 romset I found. Hopefully that corrects my issues. Simone mentioned using a gpu renderer? I was getting the same vfs errors with incorrect checksums in fbneo. I’m not sure where to change that setting from default?

Also has anyone gotten the Metroid prime games working well on GameCube or wii?

I had this issue as well. I followed one of the videos in the OP and it recommended going to video settings and setting “Force resolution on UWP” to ON. It took me a while but I‘m pretty sure this is the issue and it doesnt need to be changed for this version of retroarch/dolphin. It should be set to OFF. If you can somehow load that zoomed-in config file and navigate to this setting you can change it, otherwise it might be easier to create a new one with just the d3d11/12 setting changed. That’s been working fine for me with Windwaker and Mario Strikers.
