Resident Evil Village will feature no decapitations, less blood, and fewer controversial scenes when it arrives in Japan to comply with CERO standards

Why would Japanese, who like horror anime and stoof, have their shit censored?

China does it. Or something. New opressinistic prime minister? We may need to invade and get the the Yakuza out of Anime or get the Yakuza into anime

I'm not familiar with Japanese regulations but do COD games get censored over there too? Pretty sure some of the Blops games have had dismemberments and other violent depictions.

It's kind of hilarious though. A lot of Japanese games with sexual content tend to get censored in the west, but I guess some western games with violent content tend to get censored over there. I guess as Japanese devs make more console games that cater towards a western audience, they have to censor their own games for the Japanese market.

What a complere turn around for the days when it was the Western versions of Ninja Gaiden, SF II, Resident Evil, Metal Slug that were censored. Japan is turning into a joke these days for gaming

The same happened with previous RE games.
Decapitation was removed.

Why anyone surprised by this?
Japanese gaming industry heavily favor kids and teen demographics right now, it's rare for Seinen games to be produced these days (even if they are, it will be heavily sterilized).
For games, if you want to cater to the largest demographic in Japan always go Shounen which means :
- More censorship for Seinen
- More cringe Shounen themes like "power of friendship" etc (Naruto!!!!!)

I guess this is a good moment for Japanese players to start learning English so they can import Western versions of games.

Resident Evil being censorsed in Japan has been happening since RE2. It's not a new thing.

I bet none of you guys even know that previously Resident Evil 2 REmake also has a censored version to meet the strict JP CERO rating and an uncensored version which is identical to the worldwide NA/EU version.

This is some Resetera level ignorance here.

As usual draconian CERO once again ruining games. Makes me so glad the systems are all region free now so I can just get the us version. Although hopefully the digital version doesn’t hide a censorship option behind what account you play under like I’ve seen lately with at least one game.

I thought that they have been tough on violence and blood in Japan for awhile. The west censors sex and Japan censors violence.
Honestly censorship on both fronts has been higher in recent years. Violence especially due to some incidents that have happened. CERO is very strong on those areas. Japan censors sex a lot. Remember there are actual laws here banning the showing of genitals here which means even regular Hollywood films and tv shows are censored in the most ridiculous of ways. Plus in general sex and nudity on tv, especially regular tv, has been toned down a lot here and basically almost completely eliminated on regular tv. Much different from the past.

the censorship laws, and rules from the government and organizations like cero aren’t very popular of course, but no one wants to try to push them to reverse those laws and rules here for obvious reasons. In the game world you do see more people importing games to avoid censorship but like I said before I’ve even seen that doesn’t always work. For example, if you play the us digital playstation version of cyberpunk on a Japanese Psn account, all the sexual content is heavily censored. However if you play it on a us account it’s back in the game. Very interesting they went to all that trouble to censor a us version of the game with no Japanese in it for one possible market, but it goes to show you the companies know people are importing and will try their best to follow the laws and the rules in every way they can. But all it does is piss off people here .

Japan created those big tit vampire women in the first place. You won’t see anything like that in a western game. The west censors that stuff out before it leaves the art dept.

America is ok with violence but not sex. Just look at NYC mayor, who killed 13,000 people and tried to cover it up, but is only feeling the heat to get fired because he awkwardly flirted with some women.

Seriously didn't know that this was a thing. What are you doing, Japan.
Decapitation is a cultural thing in Japan Feudal similar to religion... you had the right technique to decapitate a person and only masters were allowed.
If you were not decapitated your soul should not find peace.
It is part of the seppuko ritual and when you were sentenced to death it was a honor to die decapitated... the family even fell proud of the death after.

So it something very important in Japan culture.

BTW it is not only RE games being censored... from my mind Resistence, Until Draw, etc have no decapitation in Japan.

Yeah , that is a weird one. Kill thousands, sweep it up under the rug, and move on, but possibly sexually harass and your considered finished. Even so I don't think the backlash has been that strong.

Thankfully consoles are region free nowadays, but as someone has already said. Biohazard has had censorship for a very long time between regions. Even the japanese GC version was gimped compared to it's western release regarding decapatations & exploding head stuff.

Weird timeline when Japanese gamers are importing Western releases of games now :messenger_grinning_sweat:
It’s not a gigantic amount but there are people who are absolutely importing western games in Japan. And it’s not just the foreigners living in Japan but Japanese gamers too, and the censorship rules are a big reason why. Many of the stores that sale import games here make sure to stock more of games that are in that situation and make a big deal if a game isn’t sold in Japan due to censorship or possible censorship. For example the Mortal Kombat games. And since it’s become so easy to import now thanks to Amazon Japan getting into the import game big time years ago, many gamers here are making that decision to play the western versions.

How times have changed
Sarcasm? Resident Evil has always been less violent and more censored in Japan. Did people forget in any Resident Evil with decapitation, it doesn't happen in Japan? Same with the amount of blood? Has no one seen the Japanese version of RE4?

The only thing that should be censored in RE7 and RE8 IS THE FISRT PERSON VIEW!!! Though I tried multiple times the first person view is a barrier I cannot overcome when playing RE. FPS is one of my least favourite genres and I cannot help but think that it makes for a clunky RE experience.

If that third person Gamecube RE 4 beta was CLEARLY going to succeed in delivering a tense and scary experience what makes Capcom think that they should resort to first person view to provide a scary experience? They succeeded with RE 2 Remake.

To me the first person view is just a lazy way Capcom found to artificially improve the scary aspect of the game influenced by the success ot that PT Silent hill demo....

If you remove/change a couple of words from the game, REVII is basically an Outlast inspired game with combat against the most generic types of enemies in a horror game... Think about it... You spend most of the game killing mold monsters... Mold.

In VR it's cool, outside of it is an ok game... But in no way a RE game.

Capcom only added RE things to it, because that way they brought sales and fans from the series.
