Report Disco Elysium dev ZA/UM to lay off around a quarter of its staff, cancels new game

Around 24 employees are at risk of redundancy at Disco Elysium maker ZA/UM, according to GLHF sources close to the matter. This is roughly a quarter of the company’s current total workforce.

These cuts go hand in hand with the cancellation of a project codenamed X7, which we’ve been told was a standalone expansion for Disco Elysium. In a call with staff ZA/UM president Ed Tomaszewski said that X7 “was a game that was one to two years away from completion” and could’ve taken “more time and effort than Disco Elysium did.”

ZA/UM CEO Ilmar Kompus informed staff of the cuts in a message read by GLHF, writing that redundancies will mostly affect “the X7 team but also our non-development teams and non-X7 projects.”

Groups at risk of redundancy were listed in a separate message seen by GLHF and named writers as well as engineers on the X7 project alongside 3D, 2D, and technical artists, production, IT, and animation employees company-wide.

According to our sources this is the third big project at ZA/UM to be canned or put on hold in as many years with a Disco Elysium sequel (codenamed Y12) being cut in 2022 and a game set in a new sci-fi IP (codenamed P1) being paused in 2023.

What happened to the studio? I vaguely remember some communist controversry

Kind of a long story, but I'll try to sum it up.
Disco Elysium is more than a game. The world of Elysium is a project Robert Kurvitz started working on when he was a teen. He, alongside other people (Martin Luiga, Argo Tuulik, Kaspar Kalvet and possibly Jüri Saks), started Elysium as a DnD campaign, with Robert Kurvitz acting as the DM.
You may have heard about 'Sacred and Terrible Air', a novel published in 2013, written by Kurvitz. It's set in the same world as the game, Elysium. It was a commercial failure, selling only 1000 copies and driving Kurvitz to a severe case of alcoholism. I would like to make that clear because 1) It makes the character of Harry hit deeper and 2) It illustrates the potential harm taking away Kurvitz' work from him could do.
ZA/UM started off as a cultural association. It was founded in 2009, and dissolved just recently after all this shitshow (you can find the official letter from Martin Luiga, one if it's founding members, here: ). ZA/UM studio, the videogame company, was founded in 2016, I believe by the same people that founded the original cultural association, which would include at least Martin Luiga and Robert Kurvitz (I don't know about the others).
ZA/UM has basically been corrupted by it's investors, who have taken the opportunity to fire those founding members (Robert Kurvitz, lead writer and designer; Helen Hindpere, lead writer; and Art Director Aleksabder Rostov). While the reasons are unclear, I think it's safe to assume that it was due to difference in interest. The original founders probably wanted to stay true to their ideals, while the investors wanted to transform the company and the game into a parody of themselves. A money-making machine. You can see evidence of this in the deal made with Amazon to make a Prime series, in the extremely expensive clothing brand, or in the fact that they are now looking for 'Sales and Monetization Specialist' for the company: https://zaumstudio.com/jobs/sales-and-monetization-specialist .
I should also mention that two of the main investors (I don't know if there were more), Tõnis Haavel and Kaur Kender, have charges for financial fraud and CP respectively.
So that's basically it. ZA/UM has become basically everything Disco Elysium criticized. The founders, which were basically the soul of the game, having been working on Elysium for decades, are now gone, which means that Disco Elysium's sequel (or any other game they release) will likely be a shitty bootleg copy of it's predecessor.
And worst thing in my opinion. The people who worked on that world for decades have lost the rights of their own creation. Just like that. The world they worked on for years is no longer theirs. It is one of the most unfair cases in the history of video games.
This ended up being a bit longer than I expected, but I think that's mostly it. Oh yeah. Fuck ZA/UM.
Edit: skleroos has made some corrections in a reply to this comment. Be sure to read it as he seems much more knowledgeable about the details than me.

I still have to play Disco Elysium. Looks like a great game.
Do it! The writing is terrific, it's rare that I actually "LOL" while playing a game, but that happened on multiple occasions "Contact Mike" had me absolutely floored. And you don't have to become a communist. You can though, if you're so inclined.

Just a small hint beforehand. It's very much ok to fail a skill check, often it's more entertaining. You can of course save scum if you like, but I'd advise against it. However, towards the very end of the game, you have to succeed in either of two skill checks. If you fail skill checks, those reset when you reach a new level. But if you've done all of the side content up to that point and are unable to level up... you're basically fucked. So save every now and then (the game does autosaves, but very infrequently).

The premise of DE always seemed super cool. I just can’t get over all the text all over the screens I have seen.

The... whatever edition it is called, the one that released on consoles, is fully voice acted unlike the original release. So you don't have to read much at all (provided you can comprehend English).
It wasn’t about the reading. I prefer reading than most voice acting (see FF7 Rebirth bad acting). The UI just looked like a mess and the images sent my ADHD/OCD into a tailspin.

The dev was started as a kind of a communist arts collective, which comes across in the themes of Disco Elysium, but to get the game lit they incorporated the company with some financing from a kind of shady business dude who basically stole their money, used it to buy the company out from themselves with some slick shell game shit and stole the IP like capitalist supervillains.

When is the movie adaptation releasing?

Loved DE, even if i'm a soc dem haha. Just smartly writing and constantly witty in not a cringe way, which is INCREDIBLY rare these days.

It just fucked to see what happened to it's creators and studio. Being talented doesn't always pay out it seems.

One hit wonder but what a hit it was.

I don't think that does them credit. I fully believe the original staff could put out a fantastic product again. The problem is (as often the case) investors.

With the departure of key staff I have zero interest in any new output from the studio. From everything I've heard about how toxic the environment was during DE's development, maybe this is for the best, but it's still kinda sad. :messenger_frowning_

DE was an amazing game with some of the best writing I have seen in gaming.

It is very unfortunate that the creators got f-d by that unscrupulous bastard. Who is also a dumb bastard since you can’t create great games without great creators as we can already see with this studio.

Edit: Completely unrelated but I really recommend Shadowrun Dragonfall (and follow up Hong Kong) for some really well written story and characters in a CRPG.

That studio died long time ago when they forced the creative force behind Disco Elisium, Kurvitz, Rostov and some other people. I say good riddance if Zaum shuts down for good.

It's been a rough couple years for that team. With Kurvitz gone it wouldn't have really been the same but I'd have been curious to see what this project was like. With how chaotic things got I guess the glass-half-full approach is at least we got Disco Elysium.

I mean they took the ip but all the original creators left so the company was dead in the water. Not sure if they cared of course or not.

Of course they cared. I mean the game was based on the one guy's novel.

But yeah, from what I understand the guy who did it was a convicted fraudster who was hoping to flip the company to a larger buyer and get out, but when no one was interested in buying the dev without the original creators they pivoted to DLC and sequel plans.

Obviously the odds that we would have gotten a credible sequel that fans would have liked out of this pirate hijacking are slim to none, so this isn't really a great tragedy to see the thieves going out of business

Tell me Kurvitz at least made a pretty penny from Disco Elysiums success?
Nope, they literally committed fraud to hollow out the company and buy it back from themselves. They essentially stole Kurvitz's stake in the company and IP rights and then fired him.

I think I've seen DE on deep discount to like $15 CDN at times. I'll bite one of these days..... well look at that!

GOG deal $11 for Final Cut edition. Deal ending in a week. Will bite on the weekend!

I meant the guy that stole the company if he cared about it and apparently he didn't. Just a quick buck.
