RAD Founder: Apple could obliterate Switch and render consoles obsolete

In a tweet posted yesterday, Andrea Pessino, founder and technical director of Ready at Dawn studio, claims that if Apple released an M1-powered portable it would obliterate the Switch and render gaming consoles obsolete in the future.

My take is that even if that were true from a technical POV, content is what matters and without internal studios it wouldn't really do it.

Lol okay, good luck with that.

But to play the other side for a second, what are Apple good at? iOS software is of high quality, and their connectivity is well done. Hypothetically, they would likely make a nice OS. Take a screenshot, and it’s immediately on my phone to share in a well designed app that is integrated with the OS.

But the console also costs £2000 and a vertical stand is £600.

lol...No

Don't get me wrong, Apple has the tech and the funds, but in the gaming space they don't have the mindshare and you would likely see a performance equivalent to the OG Box VS the competition... You know who else people thought would destroy the competition...Google, and have you heard of this thing called a Stadia?

Nintendo has a FIRM handle on the handheld market and currently owns Japan...

Sony and MS would also not go down without a fight and while I don't think Apple would do as badly as Google, it wouldn't be a landslide at all, more importantly the ease of development makes porting on the Box to PS a breeze and vice versa, if Apple came into the market with a custom build it could really effect the development time /strain on development.

This is one of the top contenders for the award for the most pointless tweet of the year.

Of course, a company that brings out good hardware with good games can push out the competition. That has nothing to do with Apple. He could have written the same statement about Coca Cola, McDonalds or PornHub.

It's amazing how people think Apple discovered ARM based processor. Apple does not have exclusive access to ARM cores and if ARM cores are worth the hassle ( no more backward compatibility ) then Sony and MS can make a console on it.
They didn’t, but they custom engineered a chip that’s playing AAA games at decent settings without a fan that uses 16ws of power.

Many of those games have no real ARM optimization as well. Apple could EASILY money hat a switch competitor but no one wants to come over.

Apple simply don't want to enter in the videogame market with it's own console, it has no sense since Iphone and Ipad with the App store IS their videogame market were they have the absolutely monopoly.

Pessina should know videogames are not (only) hardware: videogames is mostly games, exclusives, support, ecosystem, devkits. They have the hardware but the rest (now) is weak.

Nonetheless , a Switch with the M1 CPU would be nuclear bomb.

Apples hardware is indeed very impressive.

But unless people are suddenly willing to pay >$1000 for a dedicated gaming console, I very much doubt this statement.

They already do

According to research by Digitimes, Apple is expected to ship in excess of 60 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2021. This would make Apple the top smartphone seller over the this quarter and the last of 2020.

Total shipments for the two quarters, are expected to be over 150 million iPhones. That's up 38% year on year, for Apple.

And play every game with microtransactions?

No thanks.

Not to mention crazy apple prices with it’s products and accessories. It’s like Nintendo on steroids in pricing. Also you can bet your ass that phones planned obselesence would spill over to this forcing you to upgrade.

No games, no established first party studio, absurd prices, phone‘s innate battery restriction and draconian practices means it would take a massive miracle for it to take off especially with the gaming space being crowded as it is with upcoming streaming tech via xcloud and stadia which many would follow. I just don‘t see it happening in the immediate future.

Note how 5nm M1 manages to lose vs 7nm Zens even native vs native not only at perf, but also at perf/watt.

Sounds like a hidden M1 advertisement.
I guess people aren't buying M1 lolbooks in droves.

Chuckle at GPU front of things.

Yup, not without games.

He literally says "with the right software" and your first response is this?
You just felt like reiterating his point?

On Topic.
An M1 powered portable would indeed be powerful enough to give devs alot of freedom in game design and its effeciency would be godly for handheld users, if Mx is powerful enough to keep up with desktop class CPU/GPUs yeah sure you would have the power and likely the userbase because you know Apple people buy Apple everything.

However it would be an Apple game console, so fuck that noise and please miss me with it while you are at it.
I'd rather wait for AMD/Intel/ARM/Nvidia to make an M1 counterpunch and make a Super Switch or GamepassBoy or Vita2(lol).

The m1 chip is impressive, shockingly so but it's going to be a tough sell getting companies to develop enough games for it. They could try and virtualize windows though, stick a pretty face on an app store and have it go into that.

Like performance or the developer libs are the success factor, not Nintendo being Nintendo.
2020 and 2021 has been really hard on some people I guess.

When I wrote dedicated gaming console I did not mean phones/ipads. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I am thinking more in line with Switch. A dedicated system that only does gaming.

If it doesn't become like one of those many android consoles that only runs mobile games would I love to see them creating a console just for the sake of having more competition on the market.

But if it will be limited to mobile games only or games in mobile quality do I doubt they will make the switch, or any other console, obsolete. Especially because emulators aren't possible.

from hardware perspective might be true

however it is not that simple. how much that thing gonna cost? one of good stuff about switch and console is its price vs performance value

also, games.
