PS5 Major September System Update

My guess is AVR support will be object based like Atmos w/LPCM as the underlying codec (as opposed to TrueHD) vs traditional 2-speaker 3D audio.

I haven’t tried it in the beta yet but I believe they improved the headset audio quality so it doesn’t sound as bad.

Are we talking about Dolby MAT 2.0?

A Dolby MAT encoder resides in a Blu-ray player to pack the variable bit-rate Dolby TrueHD bitstreams for transmission over the fixed bit-rate HDMI. A Dolby MAT decoder is concurrently employed in the Dolby TrueHD decoder in the receiver/processor to unpack the Dolby TrueHD bitstreams. With the introduction of Dolby Atmos, we have expanded the Dolby MAT technology to support encoding and decoding of Dolby Atmos metadata incorporated in lossless pulse-code modulation (PCM) audio.

A key benefit of Dolby MAT 2.0 is that Dolby Atmos object-based audio can be dynamically encoded in real time and transmitted from a source device with limited latency and processing complexity. Likely sources that will employ Dolby MAT encoding include broadcast set-top boxes and game consoles. The Dolby MAT 2.0 decoder outputs the object-based audio and its metadata for further processing inside the device. The Dolby MAT 2.0 container is scalable and leverages the full potential of the HDMI audio pipeline.

You realise that you won't be downloading any new hardware tomorrow and that the beta download was to test new software?
It's a known entity what the hardware can do, M.2 specs are not a mystery to anybody and have been used across many different types of hardware.
A firmware release is just not related to being able to test a piece of hardware. Just because the comparability wasn't included in the firmware doesn't in any way suggest that it hasn't been available to them in some form however many months it's been. They aren't using proprietary storage and when the public has access to the firmware, the public will be connecting one of an ever expanding library of SSDs to the PS5.
What your saying makes absolutely no sense at all but people not understanding something isn't really an issue for me but it actually sounds like you've not thought through what you're and that is something that I have issues with.
Let's just hope that all the console makers guessed right for any upcoming games and/or accessories because they're clearly just guessing what will be compatible with their systems.
PSVR 2 will be very expensive if they guessed incorrectly, I mean it's not as if they have a finalised PSVR 2 headset and finished games to test on the system. Imagine they launched it and it wasn't compatible with the PS5 but only worked on Switch because Nintendo guessed correctly but they didn't.
I'm sorry. I just didn't know how they can test the functionality of hardware without the software.

Fucking hell. GIVE US MULTI-OUTPUT AUDIO. They had it on PS3, skipped PS4, and will probably skip PS5 too.
They’ve said that 3D audio patches will be in this order:

1. Headphones (was there at launch)
2. Built in TV Speakers (this patch)
3. Sound bars
4. 5.1/7.1 systems

So at least they have a roadmap, but it does suck atm.

Yeah sony really need to fix his buggy rest mode ASAP.

I was going to work and i left the deathloop disc inside the console to copy the files and download the patch in rest mode, i return almost 5 hours later and the fucking thing is still at the beginning of both operations, and this was with the ethernet cable attached, not even the wifi that can be unstable (not with the main modem 1 mt away from the console but let's just forget that).

And this happen half the times i have to install something from the disk, right now i have the console turned completely on to do the fucking thing because i can't trust rest mode and i want to play the fucking game before bed time without other surprises.

Fix your shitty OS sony.

I got both of my ps5 consoles in the test program and I've had the SSD's in both of them since they let us try it out or w/e and I can confirm mine works perfect. No problems, and while I didn't use a heat monitor of any kind the system doesn't feel any hotter.

Works great on my LG c1 don’t notice any of this flicker you’re talking about maybe you should buy a quality tv
Quality tv you say? You don't know shit about your tv then. I also have C1 lol.
Just because you don't see, don't mean there is no issue. Vrr is unfixable problem for OLED. My video and Vincent's

It's not a big deal but all below 120hz looks a tiny bit worse. And sudden fps jumps will look like flicker

I'm sorry. I just didn't know how they can test the functionality of hardware without the software.
There's no reason at all to be sorry.
Without actually seeing the code it's difficult to assess but the firmware itself likely consists of thousands of lines of code but the M.2 will be what is likely a tiny fraction and them not having a complete version of this firmware before doesn't mean that they wouldn't have been able to test that M.2 drives are compatible with their system on a hardware level when the hardware was designed.
I promise you that it really doesn't make any sense to think if it in such a way.

I really like the
  • Automatic capture of “personal best” videos. When players compete in challenges for a better time or a higher score and set a new personal best, a video clip of the action will automatically be recorded. Players can also share clips of their personal bests directly from the challenge card in the Control Center, or from their Media Gallery. Players have direct control over this functionality via their Captures and Broadcast settings.
not for every game obviously but if they nail the implementation I'd love to see that rather than saving and trimming clips

Because we know when it’ll come. When the HDMI alliance finalizes the HDMI 2.1 spec, Sony will update their Bravias with VRR and then update the PS5 to support it. The spec isn’t finalized yet, so this firmware won’t have it.
How did the Xbox manage to get VRR working if the spec isn't finalized? Are they using a proprietary variant? Don't several other TV manufacturers use VRR as well? Did they create a custom version of the spec?

Still no VRR and 1440p support booooo
booooo you.
Vrr will come sooner or later. It's not like you need it at all on ps5 now...
And 1440p is just dead. It's like 1680x1050 was. It's intermediate resolution that is dead. Everything is 4k. You can run internal 1440p and upscale to 4k with better results.
And wanting 1440p indicates you play ps5 on a monitor. So You have much bigger problems than 1440p... like lack of hdr on a monitor and lack of 4k. And... and a monitor.

Sorry for being so disrespectful man.... Just think BIGGER ! Get a huge tv, maybe oled or samsung. PS5 looks so much better with good HDR.

Rest mode is a piece of shit and I don't use it while there's a game running. I quit the game and then put it in rest mode.

Just earlier tonight I had Deathloop in rest mode, and after booting it crashed the game and I had to restart from scratch.

It's such a mess, unfortunately.

1440p will never happen. Ever.
I genuinely believe it won't with Sony, despite the fact that they said they will look into it, however from launch it would of been a nice option to have a happy medium for 1440 and 120fps, especially for people that have monitors that support it, the competition do support it so why not match it on their end with a software update but hey-ho.... #4ThePlayers 🙄

I use rest mode almost every time, except when there's a storm coming then I turn it off. Not disbelieving the issues, but it works like I expect it to here. No external drive though.

I've had no problems even with an external drive connected. There were issues in the very early days with the odd game I think, but haven't had any issues for months.

Prepare for a laugh, like i said i just left the console turned on while a was having my dinner to download both the installing files and what i thought was the latest patch.
I was ready to play (the ps5 even told that the game was ready to be played), i press X and boom, the ps5 start a new download of this 1.3 patch and now i have to wait another 30 min because the download is slow as fuck...and who knows how much to copy...

And this happened a lot of times already...i don't even know what the fuck was the ps5 downloading before if it was not the patch...

I mean, the next guy who tells me that consoles have the plus of being plug and play compared to pc is gonna get verbally assfucked...

How can be so hard to do a decent OS after 5+ iterations...

Well at least sony has a clean UI, last time i turned on my xone i had this clear vision of nightmares having nightmares about that fucking UI.

Nice! I’m doing fine with a 1TB external SSD at the minute. Mostly PS4 games on there and it is a decent speed. Anything PS5 obviously plays from the internal and ive never needed to really move stuff around since launch. Just delete and re-download if need be.

looking forward to the new trophies though. The new layout is not great.

3D Audio Support for Built-In TV Speakers

The PS5 September Update adds support for players to experience 3D audio through their built-in TV speakers. Once enabled in the Sound menu, this feature transforms standard two-channel TV speaker audio into three-dimensional sound, heightening the sense of gameplay immersion.

Yeah, i totally believe that my 100 bucks no name tv gets 3d audio.

Do discs copy in rest mode, I’m not sure that’s a thing?

Downloads, patches should.

Disks don't copy in rest mode lol. Internet patches yes, but it would need the base game if you're installing it from a disk to be on there first.

I’m sure this has been answered somewhere maybe, but how would one update the firmware of SSD? I wouldn’t think it would work being inside the console?

Well they'll probably never figure out how to get the "3D Audio" out of an AVR, as that's pretty complex shit.

Adding an EQ to 3D Audio won't improve the hollowness you get out of it though.

Congrats to the sad gamers that don't have AVRs and don't get true surround sound, it seems like a small number, seeing as you already bought a $500+ gaming console. I'm sure some people will get the use of it.

It's nice that they're using a microphone to get the acoustics of the room, but I'm not sure how good the Dual Sense microphone is, most AVRs give you a special mic that is specially designed for the task.
If the AVR can output PCM (which most/all newer AVR's can) it shouldn't be that hard. Just sold my home theater (Denon, Dali, Atmos 7.1) to get a 9.1.4 soundbar setup instead - now, how can a soundbar sound better than a AVR 7.1 speaker setup, that costs 3 times as much as a fucking soundbar? - I'll tell you why.. Virtual Surround Sound. Even my Beyerdynamic headphones with 3D Audio sound way better than my 2 year old $3000 Atmos 7.1 setup, lol.

Congrats to the sad gamers still living in the past :messenger_grinning_squinting:

And yo, having a mic on a controller, which can monitor the sound from a TV, to setup virtual surround is pretty epic dude..

I'm worried now, I just bought a WD Black SN850 for the PS5 expansion slot.. My PC does not support this SSD, do I need to update it's firmware before using? I don't want to have some issue not getting the performance out of it because of some firmware/bug issue. Not sure how else you would update it. I didn't even think of this before.

I've used rest mode countless times (with Deathloop even) and I never had a problem.
