PS5 exclusives drove me to buy Xbox Series X — here’s why

The Sony marketing machine is very strong even without considering exclusive games.

My friend bought exactly one PS4 exclusive last gen (Horizon) and played it for about an hour before discarding it and still turned his nose up at XSX and waited for PS5 to come back in stock. He plays mainly Fifa, COD, AC and indie games so I think he would be better with XSX & Gamepass but who am I to say.

GamePass is a great value. I think most people get that.

The question I have is, are you comfortable moving primarily to the Xbox ecosystem and putting so much faith that MSFT keeps pricing, game output, etc as is? They are incentivized right now to have the best deal possible for GP, to drive early numbers and then adjust later to make more money. Also, GP and quick resume are trojan horses to get you to accept digital over physical, and essentially put more power in the hands of publishers and MSFT. For those that have embraced digital, streaming, and essentially game rentals, GP is a godsend (at least for now). For those that care about physical games, game resale or game ownership in general, GP will never be the best option.

Can't say I fully disagree.
I'm still more interested in the Ps5 because Sony just makes more games that I like. And I still have questions about how Gamepass will affect MS exclusives.

But one of the big reasons I'm in no rush to get a Ps5 is how damn expensive games are. I think people in the US have it good with a reasonable $10 price increase. But in other places prices haven't been nearly as stable and this additional price increase isn't helping. Right now in my country Ps5 games are literally TWICE as much as they were when the Ps4 launched. And I'm just not seeing any substantial increase in quality, like yeah the visuals and performance are nicer but I'm not seeing games offering vastly enhanced gameplay compared to the Ps4 gen.

Meanwhile on PC thanks to third party resellers and regional pricing games are cheaper than ever. And on Xbox Gamepass offers great value and a lot of content for the same price as Netflix.

As long as Sony makes game of the year after game of the year while MS releases 70 rated games, they will be able to ask for more money and Xbox will stay in last place.

It's not about quantity, it's about quality, we don't have time to play Game Pass filler. And I don't think we need a daily Game Pass reminder thread from the usual suspects, we know about Game Pass after the 100th thread, thanks.

People usually prefer Sony games, it's time to deal with it.

I have a PS5 and Series S both. I use GP and play the waiting game on PS5, unless its a game I badly want such as DeS. Returnal? Give a month, perhaps 2.

PS5 Plus collection is great value for money though, and you could have Control UE on top of it. As well as Bugsnax and Destruction but they're not as well liked (I usually play like 4 rounds of DA per week or so, its a keeper for me). I've sunk countless hours in Days Gone, God of War, Control UE and those can all be downloaded with a Plus sub. I also made a start with MHW. GP is also great value. Imho, you win if you have both. Sure, you have to buy 2 consoles if you have no gaming rig (PS5 DE + S as cheapest solution) and sign up for 2 services that combined cost the same as a netflix sub though (esp. with 1 dollar deal GP) but you have a lot of games. And MS Studios games you don't have to purchase.

Gamepass is great for the average consumer, most plp here are hardcore gamers that have played through everything already, for me, gamepass has so many games that I didn't play before I could spend the whole year playing it and still won't play everything

Lol another stealth advertising thread for Gamepass.

Yes, I've never seen so many ads and astroturfing for a brand which has been continuously last place since its first day. At some point, you must understand people buy and play what they want. You can't force Game Pass through their throat if they prefer the competition. Just build better games. That's the way Sony got where it is now.

What a quality thread, glad I clicked on it. Gamepass is a great value, there's no denying that. But it comes down to the games and reason to purchase the console. I bought a PS5 and will play exclusives via Gamepass on my PC. I have zero reason to buy their console. We will see how this plays out over time and what Sony's response will be to Gamepass, but so far it hasn't hurt Sony to not have a direct response beyond PSNow. I'd love for PS Now to be included in PS+ for $30 more on the year, i.e. a higher tier. I'd also like the option to install all games and play natively.

If you could download PS3 games I would've signed up for Now. Especially if Sony comes with a combination deal, which actually makes sense if they do.

Very boring, every conversation on xbox always leads to gamepass..

Gamepass..gamepass..gamepass...gamepas again...

Guess what we already have it on pc and xbox...so why keep talk about this....

What do you get from gamepass?

Some old ass game like borderlands 3, need for speed, call of duty infinite warfare, gta5, fifa, etc

Been here done that we had this conversation many times before one or two is more than enough

Show me something new

I'd say "PS5 exclusives drove me to buy the PS5 - here's why : that's the console where PS5 exclusives are".

Not sure it's thread worthy, but that makes more sense.

If you prefer to play Halo than God of war is perfectly understandable. But if you prefer to play God of war and then you choose Halo only for being cheaper you are doing something wrong and probably you will regret.

Literally having both consoles is the best option. PS5 makes a great exclusive box. Series X is a great gamepass/multiplat (even if PS5 has a marginal performance in some games, I greatly prefer the xbox ecosystem and things like quick resume, assymetrical joysticks). But to be honest, the price difference isn't negligible. People constantly downplay the price difference but it really does make a difference. I could pay 70$ for deathloop or wait 6months and play it for free on gamepass. Also being able to jump between multiplayer games like stellaris, deep rock galactic, Destiny 2, sea of thieves with my friends because we all have gamepass is pretty awesome and saves us all money while allowing us to play many different games. I wouldnt go without PS exclusives, but Xbox will likely get significantly more gaming this gen for me. I especially live Xbox cross-platform multiplayer so I can play on my PC with friends on xbox and be in the same partychat.

Lol

So your not buying a PS5 because of the prices of their exclusives and yet bought a Xbox which has got no dates on when there exclusive games are coming and cost the same.

gamepass ramble ramble ramble

Great article....

What are the dates on the PS5 exclusives?

so a sub to gamepass forever and the discount you get if you it is better then buying at full price at release
ok sure
gaming is a selfish and costly hobby and if your happy who am I to say other wise
i think gamepass will be on PlayStation in 3 years. once xbox has there games ready to come out. they will stop making consoles so they can make GP a service you cant skip
And prices will always go up

Because PS5 games cost $70 and Xbox Series games cost $70? Ok, then.
But they aren't so far

And it's bad practice that platform holder do this sort of thing.

Recorder earning everywhere yet games needs to be more expesnive, makes sense.

Translation

My broke bitch ass drove me to buy a series X
Gaining wealth is about habits... criticizing people for not spending exorbitantly and valuing a cheaper option is a pretty strange complaint. I'll still spend 70 on God of War, and Spiderman 2 on my PS5 if I'm not already really busy with something else at release time but at 70$ a pop, the rest can wait for sales. It's nice that I don't have to worry about that with my Xbox. And I could afford to spend frivolously if I wanted to, but its also not how I got to where I am today.

It seems that gamepass really is teaching people to not buy games. The future is gonna be weird where everybody will want AAAAA games for 5 dollars a month and nobody will be making them.
It could happen I guess but the funny thing about Gamepass at this point is that the games are selling more. That’s what they’re saying at least. GP seems to work like ads when people are talking about what they’re playing, some devs has put up their games there multiple times, probably because they get increased sales during that period.

I know plenty of people who don't care all that much about sony games tho, and who'd rather play those "filler" games than pay 70$ for what they consider just a mildly entertaining experience.
Sony's definitely on its way to losing those costumers.

Gamepass will be spectacular for consumers until Microsoft needs to actually make money out of it.
But at that point consumers will reevaluate its worth. Sure I expect them to raise by a dollar or two occasionally but if it loses its value, the service will also suffer. I seriously doubt it ever loses its value, especially as more robust competition comes from Amazon, etc.

PS+ collection does same thing in the here and now as gamepass.

Once more MS exclusives will start dropping it will be better.

I have both consoles (and pretty much ALL previous consoles) and love them both. However I am enough of a big boy to admit each consoles strengths and weaknesses. Anyway neither console has a great range of games right now, but the PS5 is currently gathering MORE dust due to my daily fix of Warzone looking and sounding better on the Xbox SX.

Yeah it’ll be like every other subscription service, competition will keep the pricing in control, and it’s hyped right now because of the crazy deals, once everyone have to pay full price MS will need to work harder to have all this positive talk.

Ps Plus collection of old $10 games isn't the same level of value at all. The odd game on the monthly program is good, equal to gold.
But without the newer stuff and day and date 1st party, it's not on the same level.
Agreed though, you really need both machines to play all the good games expected this generation. (And previous ones)
