Microsoft was in prime position this gen to cause another major split coming off the back of the Xbox 360, they fumbled very hard.

If Xbox One came out of the gate swinging and was a value proposition as compelling as the PlayStation 4 without all that policy nonsense the PS4 wouldn't be where it is now. Would it be successful? Absolutely, but the reality is the split would probably be in 70/80 million neighborhood instead of a 100/50 million split.

The Xbox One did fumble hard with its original message, but that's hardly the only issue.

Look at the discrepancy in games for the entire generation. They've been dropping the ball the entire generation.

36.9 million PlayStation Plus subscribers is far lower than I expected.

I guess multiplayer isn't a big of a deal as people think.

Maybe number of subs. could be bigger if they put F2P behind a PS+ paywall. But i'm glad they didn't and i hope it would stay that way. The rest of 65 mil. users can play F2P LITERALLY for free.

Also, PSNow removes the need of PS+ for multiplayer in general so add those 700k there too.

I'd say PS4 has a legit chance of being the best-selling console ever within the strict confines of its launch generation. By which I mean the PS2's final figures include an atypically large number of units shipped during the PS3/X360 gen.

PS2 only shipped past 100m units in 2005, however in November of that year 360 was launched with PS3 following a year later. What this means is that at the time the PS3 replaced PS2 as Sony's flagship console, it in all probability had shipped around 120m units.

To put this into context, PS2 hit 100m in 5 years and 9 months (12/2005), PS4 hit the same milestone in 5 years 7 months (6/2019) and unlike PS2 its not going to face the same competition (next-gen Xbox) for a full year longer. You can even add an extra holiday quarter to the total in Europe due to the staggered launch of PS3.

In addition to that its probably worth bearing in mind that one possible reason for PS2's "legs" in selling past its successors' launch was the price disparity. Its ironic that although historically its regarded as an unprecedented blunder for Sony to launch PS3 at the price it did, it seems less unreasonable when placed solely in the context of how well PS2 was selling and continued to sell as a low entry-point alternative offering.

The real disaster was that even at $599, Sony were still eating heavy losses per unit even at that RRP.

And yet we have people say Sony was lucky to have MS tumble at the beginning of this generation Lol.

They also act like the PS3 was a disaster on the level of Virtual Boy or something. The fifth best selling home console of all time.

Seriously, kudos to Sony, the PS4 has given me years of enjoyment and I still have a huge backlog of PS4 games to get to. Love this system.

Of course they were lucky. Sony was certainly firing on all cylinders this generation, but when Microsoft screwed the pooch with the Xbox One out of the gate it was like rocket boosters got strapped to the PS4.

That's just wishful thinking.

I don't think Xbox has the global market appeal to sell more than PlayStation even if they did not have the wrong message at launch.

Xbox One could possible sell more than what it sold if they did right at beginning but launch aligned they will always be behind PlayStation.

There will be, sooner or later (probably later) the PS5, PS4 Pro, PS4 will be all on the same node to save cost. Sony is known for revising there consoles.

Thread celebrating PS4 hitting a milestone, at least half the posts are about Xbox.

I disagree, the Wii paved the way for all the VR stuff we are seeing now, and also confronted the prevailing "two sticks + face buttons" paradigm. We should be so lucky to have another Wii-like console in the near future.
Ok, but the control method IT had was really disappointing and the game line-up incredibly sparse.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

The Wii really did not deserve to be up there.
Of course it did.

Just because it sold predominantly to a different audience than normal, one thats since branched off into mobile gaming, doesnt mean it didn't it didnt earn it's sales. It was lightningnin a bottle, but it was also brilliant for its time.

Congrats to Sony, they deserved it this gen. Here's hoping they won't mess up their PS5 launch like they did with the PS3 after the success of PS2.

My question is, what will sony be selling the ps4 for after that extreeme black friday drop to $149? Will they release a game bundle for $199 from there on out? I get that the ps4 remains 299/399 because of what apple has done to the multimedia industry. By this time last gen you would def see a 199 ps3 by now.

Huh? How is that related?

EDIT: NVM, just looked at your post history.

>1/3 of PS4 hardware sales.

Actually, we're talking about one of the most sucessful paid gaming services out there.

Not everything is about console wars, but you need to consider how competition is doing to have get more context about numbers and percentages.

Anyway, peace.

Sorry, that was written backwards, the 70 is Xbox and the 80 is PS. Way to get ahead of yourself there champ.

Way to go for downplaying PS brand while over-exaggerating Xbox brand heavily.

Point still stands whatever you wrote ratio, backwards or not. Cheers!

Hey now. Xbox put out an exceptional product. A milestone in console engineering.
Its the people in management and the bro attitude towards gamers where they still dont realize we all grew up and are adults so treat us like ones.

not surprised to see these results..Sony came with their A game this gen...Microsoft's stumble had little to do with Sony's success. say they did everything right at the start, what games would have kept that momentum going? i think the X is a dope machine but i can get the exclusives on my PC now for the most part. Xbox i think is in a tough spot but lets see how next gen plays out

Can it come close to PS2?
Launch aligned, until now PS4 sales curve is basically the same or slightly better than PS2:

Compared to PS2 and Wii at this point, PS4 has way more room for price cuts, has several big sellers to be released (FFVII, Cyberpunk, TLOU2, Death Stranding...) and since PS5 is going to be BC I think current active GaaS, PS Now and future indie games will continue providing support for several years.

With this hardware, I think PS5 will be expensive at launch for many players, so I assume Sony will prefer to have PS4 as a cheap entry point SKU after PS5 release during some years, until PS5 gets a lower price.

And after PS2 succesor was released Xbox was a fierce direct competitor in sales, which isn't the case with PS4 case (MS seems more focused on games, PC and cloud than in Xbox hardware now), I think that in next gen we'll see a similar sales ratio between Xbox and PS than the one we have now.

I'm pretty sure it PS4 will sell over 130M, probably over 140M. Not sure if it will reach 150M but I wouldn't discard it. People may call me crazy, but years ago I predicted that PS4 was going to reach 100M faster than PS2, Wii and PS1 as it happened.

No surprise when Microsoft had such a poor showing. As a big og xbox and 360 fan, Microsoft made it real easy to go with Sony.

nah, he is correct. 70/90 at the most. ps4 took a huge chunk of the 360's install base because of the terrible launch or better said the xbox one's lifecycle as a whole. at least 20 million users. now do the math.
46+20=66
102-20=82
... also ps3 was dodoo
