I kinda want to know if we are gonna get improvement in resolutions, surely both the PS5 & XSX can run AC:Unity better then 900p
And PS5 Boost Mode better be more then a framerate boost

If I said we would like to see performance comparisons you would reply "why would Sony compare their games to the competition?".
I'm asking them to make the consoles available to independent reviewers like most manufacturers do so close to a release. Part of transparency.

cool, show me the other manufacturers next gen games that have been shown

Based off what Sony have said it's pretty much the only conclusion you can come to. If your "boost mode" is so "powerful" it breaks game code to the extent games can't automatically make use of it and instead need to patched in for "select" games then you're a noticeable step down on what MS is doing with their back-comp.

Take Sekiro for example, unlocked framerate on both the enhanced last gen consoles but framerate is unstable and basically hovers at 30s and 40s. Based on footage we've seen of the Series X Sekiro is at a locked 60 due to the new next gen power by default. The fact this might not be the case with the PS5 version and instead require From or whoever to patch it bullshit, they just aren't going to do that. You're basically going get the same stuttering PS4 pro version on PS5, that's unacceptable when your competitor is offering what they're are offering. I hope I'm profoundly wrong about this, but based on their messaging this is the only conclusion I think someone can arrive at.

I can understand Sony adopting a "paid patch" upgrade for their 1st party games. It's their IPs which are exclusive to the console so they have a monopoly and they want to protect their value. But to have this approach for 3rd party games is stupid imo.

No. If an existing PS4 game has a hard fps cap like Bloodborne, then naturally there's no way to exceed that cap without patching. If on the other hand you have Dark Souls 3 that runs at ~40fps average on Pro because its running unlocked at up to its 60fps cap, then on PS5 it should comfortably be able to hold 60fps consistently without alteration.

Its really simple. Even if you force a game to run at above its intended framerate successfully it requires a full debug pass to ensure that it hasn't caused unforseen consequences, because some aspects of game logic may be tied to framerate. e.g. the accelerated weapon degradation in Dark Souls 2, when it was ported to PC and the framerate uncapped.

No but it's still a form of DRM on Sony's part; if you want to play that PS4 game with the disc copy, the disc must always be inserted in the system.

You can only get around that by copying the game's contents to a drive, but that forces the user to either save drive space and keep the game in their system at all times when they want to play (better hope the disc isn't lost or gets cracked), or eat up some drive space to install it digitally.

I don't know what you're getting at here as this is how it's worked the entire generation. Games aren't read from the disc, they're installed first and the disc is used as DRM/authentication since the transfer rates on HDD are significantly higher than from the BD drive.

Actually now looking at it, is there anything said about installing a PS4 disc game digitally to PS5?

Don't seem like they are pertaining to installing PS4 games from disc onto the internal storage or connected expanded storage. Maybe someone can provide some clarification?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're asking about transferring disc games that have been installed/updated from PS5 to PS5? Sounds like they'll need to be backed up to an external and plugged into PS5 or re-installed on the PS5 using the original disc.

I don't know what's so confusing or controversial about any of this. It sounds like they've made the migration process incredibly simple for games and saves.

I know.... I because I support this marvelous saga.

I support because of love to the team development. To support them and support the saga.

Fingers crossed you get a free upgrade and you can choose to buy it Again on another account :)
I want them to give free or reasonable upgrades/patch like 10 bucks

What is the PS4 game experience like on PS5?
PS4 titles get even better on PS5. Select PS4 titles will see increased loading speeds on the PS5 console, and will also leverage Game Boost, offering improved or more stable frame rates. Some titles with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K may see higher fidelity. Additionally, PS4 games will also take advantage of some of PS5’s new UX features, but more to come on that later.

So No patches for games like Death Stranding? :(
Can still only hope for more news to come later....

So does that mean no enhanced patches?

I.e improvement is solely for dynamic resolution games and games with an uncapped/unstable framerate.

Wonder how this Game Boost works. Maybe similar to PRO?
I would have to assume any "pro" compatible game will run at "pro" settings on PS5. I'd be curious about additional "boosting" above and beyond that, which games, how much of an improvement, etc.

Seems good enough.

Still curious to see how the games perform. I'm assuming it's them being overly careful and anticipating a small percentage of games having issues (they probably won't play through the entirety of thousands of games to check for issues). But both the mention of "unexpected behavior" and the advice to "run games and see if you are ok with their performance before buying DLC" makes me think at least some games might run into issues.

Don't seem like they are pertaining to installing PS4 games from disc onto the internal storage or connected expanded storage. Maybe someone can provide some clarification?

All Ps4 (and PS5) physical games are installed on the internal storage because the reading speed from the actual disc is too slow.
Physical discs basically just function as a way to install the core game directly (instead of downloading it) and serve as a physical form of DRM.

Even though games are always installed on the internal storage (and run from it) you still need to have disc inserted (on both Ps4 and 5) as a way of proving that you still own the game. Otherwise you could just install games and then resell the disc. You could have a group of 10 friends buy a single physical copy of a game, use the disc to install it on all their consoles and then resell it and make most of the money back

And if you are a PS Plus member, you can also sync PS4 game saves on PS5 through cloud storage.
But people told me that was impossible on PS5... different package... incompatible format... bla bla bla.

If PS5 has access to PS4 cloud saves then why devs are not using it on cross-gen games?

Some games may receive errors and odd behaviors, please don't buy DLC until you try the game to make sure it works? What the hell is going on here? This is a load of crap...
It means we did not test most games, but think they should work. Which I think is good news, because it seems to be hardware bc rather than emulation which would require individual testing.

Impossible!!! My friend who is a Nintendo fanboy who hates Sony was telling everyone not to buy a ps5 because the games will not be backwards compatible and to get a series X instead!!!!

They're not wrong. You still can't play PS1/2/3 games.

I wonder what, um, Afro Samurai 2 did that made it not work on PS5. Just academically.

Agreed, I had the same thought about Shadow Complex Remastered - I would love to know from a technical perspective what they did with those games that would make those games not run. Strange.

I’m glad we finally have clarification around PS4 BC on PS5. As more information comes out about both new consoles, maybe all the “concern” posts will die down a bit.

Hoping for those games in the Collection to have enhancements or at least work with Boost Mode.

I think Sony first party and MS first party will support or patch their games.

It even says how to get the patched version by checking the store, as some devs will charge if its a big upgrade (ray tracing and enhancements).

First I thought: "finally some decent, good news from that awful marketing team" then I was let down again, seeing no mention of PS4 Pro at all. I really hope the games that have Pro mode will play in Pro mode on the PS5 as this is currently the only reason I want one. But why is this so difficult to answer without leaving us to wonder? I hope it's not because it won't work like that...

Good question, i think technically PS5 GAMES does not natively support PS4 Game saves but devs can easily translate saves between both consoles. That is my thinking.

Yes... that it is what I'm thinking... devs are not doing the work to read the PS4 save to translate to PS5 save.
It should not be hard to do with Cross-gen games because they already read it on PS4... so they already know how and have even the code to read PS4 save data... the same for PS5 part they already know how / has the code to write a PS5 save data.

They just need to work on the translate itself.

I think I'm confused at this point. Is there at least ps4 pro support for games or not?
The lack of any wording suggesting pro mode is confusing, but then they talk about 4k as if we are to expect it? The ps4 had zero games that supported 4k.

It means they are going to have people code patches for 4,000 games. Just the PS4 Pro, they can patch games, but there is no promise. They have HW BC with boost mode, this does not need SW patches.

We've known for months now that there is both a PS4 and a pro compatibility mode depending on what a game supports.

If the original PS4 game have PS4 Pro support it will run in PS4 BC Mode on PS5 instead PS4 BC Mode.

Why wouldn't games that have a Pro mode work in that mode on the PS5?

Even Cerny's presentation from earlier in the year says they will.

I am little confused too - but it sounds like Pro/Vanilla 4k legacy mode is automatic. If the game IS supported by Pro enhancement - it will take advantage of it - if not, just regular + faster loading + frame rate increase.

I'm okay with that... but wish they had been more clear about it from the beginning.

A game can be:

  • PS4, no Pro patch (runs in PS4 legacy mode)
  • PS4 Pro patched (runs in PS4 Pro legacy mode)
  • PS5 patched (will have enhanced features)
  • PS5 only

It was my understanding that if something has an enhanced mode on PS4 pro it would have a ps4 pro mode when playing on ps5 no? Am i wrong in understanding this from the Road to PS5
