PlayStation Blog: PS5 April Update brings new storage options and social features

They really need another way to get screenshots off the system. Right now the ONLY way to get a screenshot off the PS5 is to share it to fucking Twitter. At least give us the option to save it to Google Drive (you're logged into Google with YouTube on the system anyways).
You can use a USB drive as well.

Time to buy amother HDD, would get an SSD but would rather save that money for an M2 when the time comes.
I'm not sure if Sony are ready for the additional heat M.2 SSD will produce and accumulate. It won't be effectively and actively cooled by anything at all and even if you'll add custom cooper radiator (if it'll even fit), what exactly will be cooling it? There's literally no room there for active cooling of any kind and it is a real problem. I highly doubt that PS5 cooler (no matter how huge it is) will be enough to fix this issue and it is not directly on top of the M.2 chamber.

zCybzJ6.jpg

I'd say go for external USB SSD storage for storing both PS4 and PS5 games (for now) and wait for more info about the M.2 heat and what they'll be doing to combat this problem.

Some nice updates. Still a couple of things they promised prerelease that aren't out yet, m.2, VRR among them.

I hope there's a big display output update being worked on all at once, 1440p would be a welcome bonus.

Isn't it designed with a bit of the airflow created by the fan to pass through it? I thought it was...I feel like they would have thought of it. It seems to be right beside the inlets

The idea to move games to USB storage when you don't need them at the moment is cool. I definitely redownloaded some games on my PS4 too many times.

  • Game Update Pre-download. Once it’s enabled by developers, title updates for games will pre-download to your console if the “automatic updates” setting is enabled and your console is on or in rest mode. This will let you start playing the latest version of a game immediately after the update’s release.
Wait, isn't this something that the PS4 was SUPPOSED to do, but rarely DID NOT, because... reasons?

If you know anything about how to effectively cool PC hardware (including storage, be it HDD or SSD), then it it could've been easy for you to see that what they have there for M.2 cooling is just pointless and useless at best. HDDs in Notebooks are cooled the same way, or rather not cooled at all which is why they are dying cuz of overheat (one of many reasons of course, but still one of them) cuz there's nothing there to actively and effectively cool them.

I think M.2. was the absolute last thing they've thought about when it comes to cooling and you can see it perfectly there. There's just no room for any custom and active cooling solution which you can get on PC where room is not a problem at all.

USB storage is awesome. I could live with that for sure. Sounds like expansion SSD is a ways off.

Cerny said PCs should have drives fast enough in Fall 2020 to work. its now spring 2021.
980 Pro was released last year before PS5 even launched.

PCI-e Gen 4 M.2 SSDs are way faster than what PS5 has and it'll be interesting to see if PS5 will support these kind of speeds.

The first major system software update for the PS5 console is rolling out globally tomorrow, and it’s packed with new features and improvements. Our team is passionate about enhancing your experience on PlayStation in every possible way, so here’s a glimpse at what’s coming for PS5, PS4, and PlayStation App:

PS5 Storage Expansion and Management

  • Store PS5 Games on Compatible External USB Drives.* With this feature, you can now transfer your PS5 games to USB extended storage from your console’s internal storage. It’s a great way to extend the storage capabilities of your PS5 console, and you can seamlessly copy your PS5 games back to the console’s internal storage when you’re ready to play. It is faster to reinstall PS5 games from USB extended storage than to re-download or copy them from a disc.
Eng-Move-to-USB-Extended-Storage.jpg

  • Because PS5 games are designed to take advantage of the console’s ultra high-speed SSD, PS5 titles can’t be played from USB extended storage. PS5 titles also cannot be directly downloaded to USB extended storage. However, games that you transfer or copy back to internal storage will automatically update when applicable. In addition, you can select which game modes you want to install (such as campaign or multiplayer) for select titles that support the option.
  • For tips on using USB extended storage on PS5, including storage device requirements, please visit: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps5-extended-storage/.
As previously announced, the PS5 console will support storage expansion via M.2 drives in the future. We’re currently working on this feature and will keep you posted with any updates on PlayStation Blog.

New Social Features for PS4 and PS5 Consoles

  • Cross-generation Share Play. PS4 and PS5 players can now Share Play together while chatting in parties. This means PS5 console users can let their friends on PS4 consoles view their game screen, or even try out the PS5 games through Share Play, and vice versa. Options include the ability to share your screen with a friend, pass your controller virtually to a friend, or pass a second controller virtually to play co-op games together.
Eng-Cross-Gen-Share-Play.jpg

  • Request to Join Game Session. A selection of your friends’ joinable game sessions will now appear on both PS5 and PS4 consoles, allowing for more gameplay opportunities together. The “Request to Join” option also serves as a shortcut to sending a game invite, reducing the time it takes for you to get into games with friends. Through the Privacy Settings menu, you can modify who can interact with you through parties, games and messages.

Enhanced Control and Personalization Options for PS5 Consoles

  • Improved Game Base. The Game Base menu has been improved for quicker access to important content and features. You can now easily switch between Parties and Friends to start chatting with your existing parties or see what each of your online friends is up to. In addition, you can turn notifications on or off for each of the parties you’re in.
Eng-Game-Base.jpg

  • Disable Game Chat or Adjust Players’ Volume. You can now quickly disable in-game chat, which turns off your mic audio and the voice audio of other players. Additionally, you can easily adjust the individual voice chat volume of other players in the same chat so you don’t have to ask your friends to lower or increase their mic volume each time.
  • Game Update Pre-download. Once it’s enabled by developers, title updates for games will pre-download to your console if the “automatic updates” setting is enabled and your console is on or in rest mode. This will let you start playing the latest version of a game immediately after the update’s release.
  • Customize Game Library. With the ability to search your library or hide games from view, it’s now easier to find content and personalize your view of your game library.
  • Screen Zoom. You can now adjust the magnification of the screen to suit your preference from the Settings menu.
  • New Trophy Settings and Stats Screen. The level of trophies that results in automatic capture of a screenshot or video clip can now be customized — so you can now choose to only capture and save images/videos of moments when you earn higher-grade trophies, like Gold or Platinum. We’re also introducing a new player Trophy Stats screen, where you can check out the summary of your trophy level and status at a glance.
Eng-Trophy-Stats.jpg

New Features for PlayStation App

We’re also introducing a myriad of new features for PlayStation App to make it easier than ever to connect with your console experience remotely. Recently, we introduced the ability to save products in a wishlist, get notifications when your friends are online, and change your console online status. In the coming weeks, we’ll be rolling out even more, including the ability to join a multiplayer session on PS5 from the app, manage your PS5 console storage, compare trophy collections with friends, and sort and filter products shown in the PlayStation Store. You can download PlayStation App for free from Google Play and the App Store.

We’re only scratching the surface of the many updates and improvements we’ve made across PS5, PS4, and PS App, so check them out and let us know what you think!

You're making your own counterargument there, of hundreds of millions of laptops out there with worse cooling, SSDs/HDDs aren't dying at epidemic rates and have gotten vastly more reliable. Most laptops probably have less to no airflow going over the SSD than the PS5 because of their thin designs.

NAND in fact prefers operating warmer to a degree, but not the controller. As cool as possible isn't the best for it like other parts, but rather bringing it to an optimal point and not having it go beyond.

There also is some overhead for some amount of heatsink height, the channels going up and down would be preferable. Looks like something like that WD Black with a flush heatsink would fit.

I feel like assuming they just didn't think of heat is going to end up as...You know.

Even if you can install M.2 with a radiator (the latter one on the image above is a lot more preferable for obvious reasons), there's nothing there to cool it effectively and certainly not with these stupidly tiny holes to create even remotely acceptable airflow. I mean, c'mon. Not to mention that PS5 as is has cooling problems adressed in this video:

The ”tiny holes” are for screws.

Also; wasnt that test declared flawed? He didnt put cooling pads back after placing the sensors IIRC.

On PS4, it only checks once a day, 5am for me, so if say an update was pushed so much as at 5:01am, it wouldn't get it till next day.

i own a PS5 and still can't figure out how it works, sometimes my games auto update much later in the day, sometimes they don't

Was it? But anyway, it won't fix M.2 cooling problems.

I'm already seeing the flood of custom BS gadgets with fans from China to fix M.2 cooling on the PS5, they'll be ugly AF.

And just like all custom cooling solutions provided to todays consoles they will at best be unnecessary, at worst actually interfer/worsen the original airflow.

Im pretty sure the cooling will be enough. One also have to consider the fact that too much cooling will actually shorten the lifespan of these SSDs.

What stupidly tiny holes, the m.2 mounts? Look at the red arrows, very top right, the ends of the m.2 bay are open. How do you know the airflow won't suffice, let alone for SSDs that are normally passively cooled?

Gamer Jesus is cool and all, but 1 in 8 memory chips indicated an abnormal temperature, not all of them, which could indicate something wasn't put back in proper contact on reassembling after placing the thermal probes.

Also, let me repeat - on NAND storage, the game isn't cooling it as much as possible as most PC components benefit from, "The paper Influence of temperature of storage, write and read operations on multiple level cells NAND flash memories from 2018 shows the following graph, which suggests that writing to flash cells at a temperature of 25°C or lower results in earlier problems at reading compared to writing at 85°C."

That's pretty hot for an optimal point anyways.

It could've been fine if something was directly cooling M.2 from directly above and running hot air down towards these holes, but by the nature of the disign (which is really not ideal and flawed to say the least), air needs to be somehow directed towards these holes and then sucked out of the system by the huge fan. I just don't see any of this as good cooling solution for the M.2, I just don't. And I'm not saying that M.2 needs to be cooled like CPU or GPU, but....

85°C is a lot of goddamn heat.

Indeed it is. And that's where NAND storage likes being. Did you know that before assuming this would be insufficient cooling for NAND that likes running hot?

I'm still not sure what you're imagining as the cooling setup here. The top and bottom ends of the bay are open and air will be pulled through, bottom to top, across an SSD, and the intake comes right from the outside vent. Right how most SSDs with heatsinks orient the fins. Not the tiny holes, which are screw mounts at various m.2 lengths...

Bring back themes, Sony! And, for the love of God, please let us transfer our PS4-themes to PS5.

PS4 themes will never be compatible on PS5. Also, changing themes on PS5 might be coming soon, because a tutorial video on YouTube had a slightly different background.

Yes. I think they could have designed internals of the system better to provide more room for big M.2 heatsinks and proper airflow, which could help to keep NAND from going above 85C or staying at around 80C at least which won't degrade performance too much (if at all).

See above. I'm not talking about screw mounts. Anyway, there's no point in arguing any longer, we'll see how things will turn out when they'll actually activate M.2 slot.

Why they don’t allow downloading to external storage? this is silly, one have to download game to internal ssd, then move it to external, but if you want to play it later you have to copy it back to internal.

Day one having a usb hdd plugged in would brick the system. Be greatful :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I remember getting a near launch PS3 (when they packed in Motorstorm) and dealing with a web based PSN, moving a cursor around with the controller I was like wtf is this? Had to quit games to do anything else, couldn't leave a download window without canceling... Sony is always behind with this stuff and eventually copy everything MS does. I don't understand people who can't see this, that's why competition is good.

Does anyone know if this will finally allow PS5 saves to be backed up on USB?

My guess is no, because they're afraid of "tHave EdItOrThzzz!!111!!"

Nope, not happening. Sony probably wants to make it harder for people to jailbreak the console and also to tweak the saves. It's a shame, because on PS4 I was rescued from many save corruptions and having to replay large chunks of the games by being able to upload them to an usb stick.
