So does this 3D Audio work with real 5.1/7.1 set-up?

We don't think so since it says it been expanded from working with just headphones to "TV speakers" as well and Cerny's Road to PS5 talk mentioned a release order for 3D audio that had TV speakers first:

But I don't think anyone is really sure yet, I've seen no reports regarding whether you can force it on for a soundbar/receiver by just setting the output to "TV speakers", although maybe that limits you to stereo anyway. I suppose you could use the sound systems own upmixer with the stereo source but obviously thats getting stupid.

True, so you mean the PS5 sends the 3D audio to the TV but the TV then sends that signal to the AV via Dolby Digital +.
Yeah we getting stupid 😂

not having 1440p as an option is such an obvious anti consumer thing to keep people from buying PC monitors instead of their own TVs it's ridiculous.

same with no VRR until their TVs support it. they clearly want to give you no features that their own TVs don't support.

they have no 1440p Monitors on the market, so no 1440p for you!
they don't have any VRR TVs on the market, so no VRR for you!

Are these ps5 codes being sent out allowed to be shared among 20 people like other firmwares? If so...can I have one pweeese.

I doubt it you'd have seen loads of people mention it otherwise

Also there's a joke in there somewhere about their not being enough machines for 20 people per code.

(I'll take one if someone doesn't want theirs though)

Haven’t got an invite. I registered when it first got mentioned that you could sign up and then again last Friday and again last night all I get is the thanks for registering response, not even a ‘you’ve already registered for this’ message.

Oh well.

Get an Xbox. 🤷‍♂️

No, not sarcasm. It’s a point of difference. And if big enough people will make the best choice for them.

Because for some reason Sony has decided not to enable these features yet.
Nobody actually knows. Rumors are going around this might have something to do with
their TV division. As you may know, Sony hasn't even delivered HDMI VRR with their TVs yet, even though they promised.

Also do not expect FreeSync support on PS5. Sony only mentioned VRR speficied by HDMI 2.1. Which of course is based on AMDs FreeSync via HDMI implementation. But the EDID is different. Traditionally Sony is a really conservative company when it comes to PC features. And FreeSync is a PC feature. So they might skip FreeSync and focus on HDMI VRR.

The whole thing regarding the Panasonic converter chip might also explain why Sony has never talked about stuff like ALLM. Displayport simply does not support ALLM unless they find another way to implement it.
The HDMI Body has yet to officially finalize the HDMI 2.1 VRR spec. LG has their own VRR implementation in use.
Sony wants to use HDMI 2.1 VRR, not AMD's Freesync nor their own.

The specs for HDMI 2.1features have been finished years ago. Even for HDMI VRR. This is why companies like LG were able to implement HDMI VRR and other features back in 2019 or even earlier. Microsoft e.g. implemented HDMI VRR and ALLM on XBox One X. Other companies like Denon and Marantz implemented HDMI 2.1 features like eARC and ALLM in much older devices as well.

However, not the specs of the features took the longest, but the specs for some of the tests. Of course you need tests in order to verifiy everything. But even these test specs have been finished in late 2020/early 2021. By the way, the test specs for repeater chips took the longest. Those chips are used in AVRs. Which is why AVR manufactures were not able to mention HDMI 2.1. But they are now. Which is why you can see "HDMI 2.1" mentioned in the specs for Yamaha AVRs:

P.S. : LG does not use their own VRR implementation. They are using HDMI VRR. The same standard that has been implemented by NVIDIA, Microsoft and so on.

Spec might was the wrong word to use, implementation should be the more correct one. I’ll try to find the source from a Interview with a Sony representative who explained why it takes so long on the Sony front. And it basically said VRR is not fully documented/implemented.
I tend to believe this as even LGs VRR implementation has its unique quirks.

Edit:
Edit2: Link didn’t work on mobile. There’s a thread on Gaf about PS5 VRR that’s like an hour old.

Well, companies usually like to blame 3rd parties :D

And it basically said VRR is not fully documented/implemented.

Maybe this has to do with that bad Mediatek chipset they are using.
But as I mentioned earlier: Everything is done by now. At least on the part of the HDMI Forum. Specs are finished and the same goes for the tests. There are even some videos on the Sound United Training YouTube channel where Phil Jones from Sound United (Denon, Marantz etc.) is going pretty in-depth regarding HDMI 2.1).

Nope. This is standard HDMI Forum VRR with no extras from LG. Otherwise it would not work with NVIDIA GPUs XBox etc. Sure, bugs can happen during the implementation, which is why LGs 2019/2020 TVs had some issues with that with FRL signals. But something like that can happen. Usually stuff like that can be avoided by participating at so called plug fests. Those events are basically group sex for electronic devices. Manufacturers can go around with their devices and plug them into a device from another device to see how they behave. If something strange happens they can take a look into it before releasing the product. But thanks to COVID those events were pretty rare. Which is why we had some trouble when HDMI 2.1 sources finally launched. Something like the infamous HDMI 2.1 chip bug in 2020 AVRs could have been avoided in total.

But let's get back to topic: Some features have been specified since years (especially for sources and "receivers" (TVs), but not for repeaters (AVRs). If I remember correctly eARC was the first feature that was made available for manufacturers to implement. However, first Gen. of eARC compatible AVRs were using a dedicated chip. This was back in 2017. ALLM and VRR came pretty close after. Which is why the One X already has support for HDMI VRR besides FreeSync VRR. You can even veryfiy this with LGs 2020/2021 OLEDs by Disabling FreeSync Premium.

I wouldn't get too excited on the 3D audio front, most likely and the way this is worded I think the support is for TV stereo speakers only, I don't think this is the 5.1/7.1 update many of us have been waiting for.

I believe the roadmap was like this:

Headphones
TV
Soundbars
5.1/7.1

Still a ways to go, and I am unconvinced the psychoacoustics of the Tempest engine will have much effect. This will sound similar to the "Surround Mode" on most smart TV sound settings.

What would the difference be? Isnt the surround sound system just that, 3d sound? Or am u missing something? Would it sort of fill in the missing spaces? For instance, if you have 5.1 system, it would use those to digitally create side or height speakers such as in a 7.1.2 system?

Or a 3.1 system simulate a 5.1

Edit: Seems like this was discussed in later posts.

Haven't posted about my experience yet, but I will a little.

First off, 3D audio through speakers aren't close to being on par with headphones. Certainly not my SteelSeries Arctis 7p. So it may work but it damn sure not the same sound quality wise in Returnal and my tv speakers are pretty decent in general.

Besides the obvious loss of activity feed that needs to comeback asap, im annoyed by the fact that I don't know who has the games I have. It use to tell me on PS4 but on PS5, unless I missed something, it just shows you how many have the same game. That means I have to go one by one to find something like that out.

Have no plans to mess with the storage in the foreseeable future so no need to talk about that.

TV speakers are the bottom end of the shit pile in audio even on the best days. I wonder how headphones 3d sounds coming out the tv's optical. In theory there should be no difference between controller / usb / hdmi -> TV -> headphones

Ppl looking for invites, if you use Gmail check the Promotions tab, thats where mine was.

I'm not sure but it seems the 3D audio update has 3D audio in the UI now. I dont use headphones alot so not sure if that was already like that.

Sony turned the Dual Sense into a speaker setup mic that comes with some receivers, they tripping, lol.

Can someone in theory upload the firmware to the net and other users download and it flash it through a usb stick ? It’s baffling that we can’t try this .
Ok the other hand just to rub it in, Sony sent me an invite to a ps4 firmware update . Like.. fuck off -_-

it's always funny when you say something bad about a game that happens to be a console exclusive and idiots come out of the woodwork interpreting it as bashing sony... I bash Drive Club, because it is a shitty looking racing game with terrible controls and shitty rules :)

I am also sad that Motor Storm had to die for that shitty ass excuse for a racing game

I also bash Halo 4 and 5 for being CoD wannabe shitshows that almost ruined a whole franchise... guess I'm a sony fanboy now 🤷‍♂️

I gotta tell ya: the 3D audio through the TV speakers makes a HUGE difference. I don’t have an external drive yet to test it out but pleased so far.

I got a code from Sony for the beta testing. I realized Im just not comfortable with doing a beta test on my relatively new system and possibly bricking it or what have you. Is it ok to give it to someone else? Or will Sony know and ban that ps5 or even my account?
