5.5gb/s it’s the speed of internal SSD.

true, but there is no way you'll get the same Performance that way, because the internal SSD is specialised for the system, which the m.2 SSD will need to compensate for.

I'm confused. Why would you have both the PS4 and PS5 version of the same game both installed?

I don't even have a PS5 but if they are changing the trophies back to how they are displayed on PS4 (scrolling down instead of across) then that's a big yay! from me.

In most cases you wouldn't, but some games will be required for different reasons.

Battlefield 2042 will require PS5 users to have PS4 version installed to play with PS4 users.

Hitman 3 requires PS4 version to play in VR.

because the way the PS5's save system works is a pain in the ass sometimes

for example, in order to use your PS4 save of Borderlands 3, you will have to install the PS4 version, then upload your save file, install the PS5 version and download the save file.

the same is true for Spider-Man and some other titles.

That has been changed as of recent sdk update. Developers can now locally transfer PS4 saves to PS5.

If anyone is in this beta, can you add the settings cog to the control centre lower menu now? It's annoying that it's separate to the other menu items, placed at the top of the dashboard.

Or can you hide or reorder the trophy/activity cards? I only use the the shortcut to the capture gallery, but it's annoying that it's all the way to the right, after the trophy/activity cards.

I mentioned it in the other thread, but I’m raising an eyebrow to the 5.5gig. The concern being Sony lowering their high watermark for throughput. And it smells like pc cross development may be the reason.
I feel like Layden and Cerny had one plan in 2019, then Ryan and Hulst politic'd their way to the top, and now we're suffering the results of their PC/PS4 crossplay/cross-development plans.

well all I know is that I had to do this with Borderlands 3... I don't knwo if newer games do it better now
Yes you had to do that but it has changed now. Developers working with the newer sdk have the ability to locally ransfer saves. Star Wars Jedi fallen order and Wreckfest are two examples that work with the new method. Transfer your PS4 saves via USB or from PS+ Cloud storage to PS5, launch the PS5 game and transfer the save without needing to install the PS4 version.

my concern-o-meter is not at zero but pretty low. I am going to assume they have been testing various drives and speeds and determined an optimal and acceptable level. I have expected slight variation all along just between different brands so Sony determining an acceptable variation doesn't concern me too much. It only concerns me in that any drive deemed acceptable still prevent pop-in.

You're both incorrect. 5.5Gbps is the internal speed. It's 10g+ compressed.

Fuck, finally 3d audio out through HDMI, and you use the Dualsense mic to measure your soundstage for accurate reproduction! Expected as such. Great news, now I wish I signed up for the beta.
Honestly considering it's only the tv speaker configuration, I wouldn't get too excited.
I wouldn't get too excited on the 3D audio front, most likely and the way this is worded I think the support is for TV stereo speakers only, I don't think this is the 5.1/7.1 update many of us have been waiting for.

I believe the roadmap was like this:

Headphones
TV
Soundbars
5.1/7.1

Still a ways to go, and I am unconvinced the psychoacoustics of the Tempest engine will have much effect. This will sound similar to the "Surround Mode" on most smart TV sound settings.
I'm skeptical as well that there will be any improvement with my surround+Atmos setup. Honestly Demons Souls and Returnal already sounds exceptionally rich compared to PS4 games.

Funny how CONCERNED all these Xbox fans are for the PS5 to get VRR. You so might want to cool your jets, looking through the bans page, I've seen people kicked out for less.

You got a point, in terms of QoL updates, VRR should be high up there in priority.
Not if you go based on number of users affected by any specific improvement in an update. What percentage of PS5 owners will have a VRR-capable TV? That's going to be a really small number of the 10M. There are going to be lots of other tickets ahead of that on the kanban. External storage would have been more important, as necessity grows much faster with time. People upgrade their TVs in increments of years. VRR is not going to be a priority QoL feature for a while IMO. It'll be timed with Sony's adoption for their TVs at the earliest, if not months later.

Depends on what you emulate and on what kind of hardware. software emulation always takes a pretty huge toll.
PS5 hardware is more than capable of emulating PS3 if Sony ever feels like developing it. There is already a pretty good emulator for PC and the devs didn't even have full access to the PS3 SDK. Imagine what Sony could do if they bothered.

how many people have 8k TVs? yet they lie on the box and say it supports it, which it doesn't

Are you saying for Sony brutal force emulation? The PC way is the most dumb way of doing emulation. Proper emulation requires optimization, something like Microsoft is doing with BC.

What would require to a PC to emulate RDR Xbox 360 at native 4k?

Good news is that this won't be an issue much longer when games become exclusive to PS5.

MS does not do emulation. Xbox has never changed architecture ike Sony did from PS2 to PS3 to PS4.

Sony said months ago, they are using their custom controller with m2 SSD too. Anyway a 5.5gb/s SSD could have better sustained performance than higher speed SSD, depending of SSD model, that is because Sony will list those compatible SSD

Lovely succint answer, thank you so much. I figured this considering other replies in the thread and what I found on google later in the thread. Cheers again though, makes sense you would disable the upmixing.

What do you think of this thread? They seem to say they got height channels sounds in SotTR and RE2R using the Atmos option, thats on PC ofc, but I'm just wondering how I can get a signal with height channels into my soundbar - which accepts Atmos and DTS:X but only to use the height channel/object data to create virtual channels - rather because I don't have physical height channels:

Of course I've no way of knowing if they are using the upmixing on their receivers or not, but I presume not if they are looking to see if the Atmos is really working. I'd really like to see a list of games that output true height data, but I can't find one anywhere, maybe because list of games that do it is so small.

Ooft, you don't want to accidently leave that one on the couch and sit on it later, or maybe you do, each to their own!

Any game with an Atmos logo should have discrete height signals, but how well/often they use them is up to the sound engineers doing the mix. A lot of content uses heights very sparsely. A direct HDMI connection into and out of the soundbar OR eARC (which would require both the TV and Soundbar to support it) is the only way to get a native Atmos signal AFAIK. A Windows 10 PC (have to download the Dolby app, and activate it in Windows sound settings) or Xbone/Series, both via HDMI, are the only gaming sources I'm aware of.

That's the same speed of their SSD, which pretty likely will have more priority channels than most PC SSDs of that speed. Maybe the difference it's just that streaming is a bit slower but maybe isn't something noticiable (like streamed stuff popping a frame or less later than with internal SSD).

They also included a dislaimer that depending on the SSD it may not work with some games, or not properly. So I assume that the whitelisted ones by Sony will work well, while other slower ones may experience issues or not work at all.

Big Jimbo Sony don't give a fuck lol. They'd recommend you buy one of their new Sony TVs. (Preferably the one with the highest price.)

The reality is Sony's own TVs don't support 1440p. That's why they don't care and why PS4/5 don't support 1440p output res. Sony only focus on 720p, 1080p, and 2160p since those are what like 95% of their users use (on TVs).
Yep, most people play with the console plugged to a tv, and most tvs don't use 1440p but instead use the supported resolutions.

So most PS5 users don't give a fuck about 1440p, in the same way they don't give a fuck if it supports on a 640p CRT TV or not. If they support would be ok, but isn't something that a lot of people is waiting for.

Many great updates, obviously the SSD expansion and 3D audio through TV speakers are the main things here but I'm glad that trophies are back to a vertical scrolling like on PS4.
I see that they wanted to unify everything with the same layout of the cards but for trophies it made navigation and access to informations too slow.
On the contrary I'm not of fan of separating PS4 and PS5 versions of games, to me the idea of having a single menu for each game where you could switch between the different versions (including demos) was good. But I guess that for many it wasn't really intuitive.

Now they need to bring back folders, custom themes and enable VRR and 8K output.
An other feature that I'd like to see is sorting screenshots and video captures that are trophy related from the rest. Sometimes when you want to cancel old captures that you don't want to keep anymore you have to be careful not to delete the trophies related stuff.

When viewing the trophy lists of games, the trophies will now be displayed vertically instead of horizontally. You’ll now be able to see more information for each trophy without selecting it.
Thank God. Can't fathom why they changed it in the first place.

Correct, but internal is custom with added priority que’s to reduce latency for streaming. Cerney said 7 is needed on standard nvme to bridge that gap

The notes also don't mandate 5.5GB/s but only recommend it which was kinda surprising. It will be curious to see how older/slower disks will perform.

That said, I think these newer requirements make more sense in some ways. I doubt many games will be running at a sustained 5.5GB/s but they might need a strong disk controller that can maintain a large number of IOs without collapsing. Peak bandwidth and sustained bandwidth are usually not the same and heat might become a factor at some point. My Intel 660p will go from 40C to 70C in a couple of minutes of sustained reads which causes throughput to drop from ~1.8GB/s to just ~600MB/s.

There's a reason that Sony recommends heatsinks and I think many people don't fully appreciate why that is.
