Phil Spencer Suggests Perfect Dark Reboot Helps Xbox Lineup Become Less Male-Oriented

"If you took an entertainment genre that was entirely brought into existence by the technological interests & work of young men and then inverted all the characters, they wouldn't be so happy" - um, great insight?

Again, there is no ethical imperative or even gain whatsoever to "more people should play core video games." It's just a particular set of products whose every trope, novel idea, and genre flowed directly from the niche of consumers around whom it grew into being.

This notion that it somehow benefits young women to play in men's fantasy worlds is a stupid as trying to convince the world that girls reading dumb superhero comic books would be a net gain or empowerment for them. Again, who cares? There are genres that organically appeal to women (take Mario Kart, which has always been universal, and which I also adore), but this isn't even about that--this is about the nonsense where companies try to convince you that it would make the world a better place if more women played Doom or whatever. An absolutely trite and meaningless goal, which only dumbs down and waters down what is distinctive about different genres, which always derives from the peculiar interests of their unique base of consumers.

I think the idea that videogame storytelling is isolated and not an organic offshoot from other media like books and movies is false. What we're taking about is a certain genre of story telling in gaming.

It's funny you mentioned how Mario Kart appeals to you as a male and to women as it has plenty of male/female (and lizard) representation. Not shocking right? Think about other games both genders enjoy: Overwatch, Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, League, WoW, Final Fantasy XIV, Sea of Thieves - All games with representation.

The point isn't that every game needs full representation. The point is what's the fucking harm in having some games that appeal to not you?

No one cares about that -- having games that focus on different demographics is fine.

What is objectionable--and makes braindead execs like Spencer a waste of oxygen--is this standard corporate-speak where they hide a purely economic advantage (more consumers, easier to turn a profit and far easier to turn a profit with far cheaper, by-the-numbers content, once you nudge out your dependence on demanding genre enthusiasts--as all shareholders know) behind a faux-progressive idea (gaming of this kind is played predominantly by men, and somehow this means women are disadvantaged by not having this particular toy in their life). It's nonsense, and has the effect of only dumbing down everything into the kind of mindless committee-approved content that dominates the output of corporates monstrosities like Disney.

In a recent interview, the head of Xbox told IGN Unlocked that details are thin on the ground for the reboot as of yet, but also said that main character Joanna Dark offers "a lot of modern opportunities" compared to the console's "men-with-guns" lineup.

"I think it's awesome that for us we can focus on a female protagonist in our lineup, we don't have a lot of that in our our first-party," he said. "I think Joanna offers a lot of modern opportunities that I love to see the team focusing on, having a strong protagonist..."

"This is me rationalizing how best to expand the target market and generate more revenue." - Phil Spencer

Decisions only make sense when they increase profits. Let's stop believing in these empty platitudes, even if Phil really tells himself he believes it.

It's not quite that though it's it? We have more games now than ever in every conceivable genre. This industry is bigger and better than ever because it CAN cater to different interests so when an executive says "Hey I think we have a blind spot in our portfolio and we want to address that" it's not a wild and crazy thing. It's not a controversial statement. It's not a dilution of hardcore gaming, it's an addition. It's not a zero sum game. Resources are available to create both kinds. Having a wheelchair ramp on the sidewalk doesn't fuck with my day whatsoever but it has huge implications for some others who see it as a godsend.

Why is this type of crap all some care about in gaming now? Who cares who the main protagonist is? I remember when we strived for great game play, not who we were fucking controlling. I never looked at Mario and wished he was a taller, slightly thinner Italian from Australia like me. I never played Metroid wishing Samus was a guy like me. I never played Zelda thinking why the main character was a weird looking guy, and nothing like me! And my daughter who is 11 years old playing games today couldn't give a fuck about playing Mario Party as the Princess or Bowser! They just want to play fucking games! My kids don't pick characters in games based on themselves! They just want to play games!!!
You're controlling an avatar for fucks sake! Who cares who you control? Much like when I watch films I couldn't care AT ALL who the main protagonist is, so long as the film holds my attention and is a good film!
Sooner these fucking clowns realize the majority of us don't give a shit about this kind of stuff the better we will all be. We don't need articles telling us he wants more female protagonists, we want articles telling us how good this fucking game should be!

Honestly I couldn't give a shit if it's a tree or a genderless robot as the protag, just make the game great. My daughter just plays games she likes to "play" rather than just the character but she will alter her character to a female based on more often than not. When you have games like fortnight with every possible character skin out there I don't think it's a huge deal about the one off campaign characters. Same goes for things like CTR racing or Rayman, they give choice to the player and the player will alter that character based on mood, preference, fun, whim etc. My wife isn't going to play PD just because the character is a woman either, she doesn't play FPS games period.

If you really wanted to appeal across the board give an extensive character creator and dynamic cutscenes with said character created, that's more empowering than a set character. Good stories around women in gaming is a good thing but we're past having to shout it from the roof tops, make a great game with a lead woman/women and leave it to stand on its own merits. We don't create a male protag and shout from the roof tops "hey check out this he-man, boys are gonna love it", nor do we summon AI future gods when we create a robot character.

Also Tomb Raider was a big push from Xbox last gen so it's not like it's a new thing for Xbox either.

This language is precisely what I object to. There is zero ethical gain to having more people play Xbox shooters or whatever else. You could have a 1,000-to-1 gender disparity in some entertainment genre (I don't know, take paperback romance novels) and that means absolutely nothing. If anything, high disparities are often a positive, in fact wonderful thing because they illustrate that different groups are finding different entertainment niches that fit their diverging interests, rather than everything needing to appeal to everyone. That's the only diversity which is coherent.

And that's not what we're getting from these kind of moralizing statements about widening the gamer base. It's corporate-speak trying to appear progressive when every syllable from men like him is only about the bottom line of their profit margin.

I've been saying the whole time that inclusivity generates revenue. It's not a difficult concept. More people like what you're selling you have more customers. More $$. The term "take my money" is legit.

EDIT: You do understand my post is SARCASM? I even quoted the passed Sean Connery about women "not leaving it alone"

You trade one audience for another. Make anything too girly in a male dominated hobby, you lose your revenue. Males let Tomb Raider and Perfect Dark in because it was cool to spend a little time in their shoes, but like in real life, once you had enough of them when they won't leave it alone, you walk away. Go woke, go broke.

Literally just say “we have a lot of female players and want to make sure they see themselves represented” you know. He stereotyped men with guns as gears 4 and 5 did anything interesting with the female character. They are the most guilty culprits amongst the big boys.

PlayStation is closer to 50/50 than anyone was expecting because they just do it in a way people like and not half assed lip service. The uncharted spin off sort of title with Chloe and Nadine was fanatic. It wasn’t just girl power ftw, for example the melee combat was literally harder and the main antagonist consistently got the better of them because they were weaker than drake, and the game still took care to tell a good story.

Saying go woke go broke is almost doing Phil a favor. The problem is you announce a game in 2020 and then at e3 2021 still have 0 gameplay to show, but we have some pr corporate talk about how important the characters gender is. How about they fucking show it. And than the men with guns thing. Uhhh, one title doesn’t fix that. They still have the least diverse line up of any publisher or platform holder whether you wanna talk race, gender, genre, or perspective.

paraded Lara Croft around on banners with chief and Marcus, Recore and they changed the main charger of the Gears series to Kate etc... I think we are ok Phil.

That being said, I'm excited for perfect dark! But... Can we now get Gears back to Marcus?

The Lost Legacy was a great game, but let's not act like ND didn't say similar things during UC:LL's road to release.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy's Approach To Gender Diversity And Inclusion - Game Informer

"I think people can empathize with any sort of character from any sort of background, but there’s something special when you see yourself in an experience," Druckmann says. "I think the more we can create that for all sorts of people, the more games can grow and become more intriguing stories when you [introduce characters] of different backgrounds and walks of life."
...
Game director Kurt Margenau told us that during playtest sessions for The Lost Legacy, one of the most prominent notes of feedback from players was that they were excited to see two strong female leads. Margenau explained that while he's pleased to see players take joy in that, it is also "kind of sad" that this is still an issue and something worth pointing out.
...
"The conversation is continuing to evolve, and there’s going to be pushback from both sides as we work beyond our comfort zones and allow for things to be more inclusive and by extension more interesting and diverse," Scherr says. "We just polished off a series about a white male protagonist that we loved working on, and wanted to work on something new."

I don't think it negates the good of having women leads in games and mentioning it, but yes we need to see Perfect Dark and how it all pans out. It just takes time to build a game from scratch with a new studio. It's not going to be as quick as an "expandalone" game from Naughty Dog like UC:LL. I think MS and Phil and Booty all know how important a game like PD is not because of diversity, but because of prestige.

also fwiw I think claiming MS doesn't have a diverse line-up of genres is a bit blindspotted, but that doesn't really matter here.

I found the Uncharted spin off repulsive. Including women in war games brought us pink matching outfit guns and the cover art for Battlefield five. You enjoy it because you're an outlier.

Difference being unlike the initiative, naughty dog had excellent female characters in the last of us, and took a massive step forward with the writing for Elena in uncharted 4 both of which came out prior to the lost legacy. There was weight to their words and it wasn’t pandering, they had a genuine idea to bring forward a character from the franchises past that people like, and develop her backstory and personality more. We still don’t even know why perfect dark is a perfect dark reboot aside from apparently having some espionage elements.

You sound like you really need the touch of a female friend, I’m sorry for whatever position you are in life.

And I’d bet 10k right here on the spot that the vast majority of pink camos bought in video games are by males. And I don’t think females much liked the cover for bfv either.

It's a fair comment and i think Phil is just happy he got the PD franchise in his bag. JD was one of the original strong female protag, long before the wokey wokism today.

Forcing diversity and inclusion in anyone's project is an artistic and a oversight of expression. It's done in communist China. Nice one there, hotwheels. Loki, the tv show went woke. How's that goin' for it?

Who is forcing anything? And let’s say publishers are on their devs, are you comparing cooperations pushing diversity on their employees to a communism? Are you daft?

And diversity is literally the opposite of what media in China has.

AND that’s literally not the point being talked about here at all.

Baffling reply here chief.

Please don't play the SJW card ffs.

Joanna Dark was a strong female character 20+ years ago. Let's not pretend like this is new shit. Have confidence in her character and let her speak for herself. Don't anchor it in SJW trash.

Not a single person in the world has an issue with Joanna Dark the way she is. But if you wrap this in an SJW narrative then suddenly you're creating dividing lines for NO FUCKING REASON AT ALL. STFU.

You know in Rainbow Six Siege literally half the lineup is female? How many special forces in the world have a 50/50 gender split? It's unrealistic, but no one said anything. ANYTHING. No one cares. Cause Ubi just confidently put it out there and didn't make a political issue out of it. The result? It's got an awesomely diverse cast, a playerbase who doesn't give two shits about whether this is good or bad. It just is. That's all I'm saying: put it out there with confidence and you won't have to put any spotlight on it at all. Not a word. Not a subtle reference or even a passing comment. Let your work stand on its own.

There are a lot of knowledge gaps to unpack here on your part. Nice gaslighting post. When it's at the point where you can't work on a project unless it has one of each type of human, except white males, then I yea, it's communism. It's equity of outcome.

Assuming that project directors don’t choose it. In the case of what’s being discussed, we know the initiative had free range to choose their project and decided on perfect dark. Phils words are pure pr talk. We know the last of us 2 was a project made with total freedom by Neil. You sound like a fool, please don’t keep replying garbage. don't really agree that anything being talked about is highly political but I digress

Regarding R6:S operators:

“Even at a larger level, as Ubisoft, we really care about diversity and representation. It’s super important for us to be sure that we cover as many parts of the population and as part of that we push for an equal split between male and female operators.”
Rainbow Six Siege: Ubisoft talks new operators, gender equality and diversity in esports | Digiskygames.com

Ubisoft made a whole video after E3 to talk about the collaboration they made with native american consultants to bring representation to an underserved demographic (indigenous women). I feel like you're just unaware of their statements and PR on the matter lol. But even still Siege isn't a narrative focused game and these Operators are gameplay elements first and foremost. Their gender/heritage is cool for character and gameplay design, but it's like characters in League of Legends. It's interesting (to me) when there is some representation and it's often pointed out by Riot (for League, Illaoi, Neeko, Leona x Diana, Senna, Lucian, etc), but it's not like they have to make a big deal of it because it's an ensemble. The players can find and play the characters that resonate with them one way or another. A AAA single player story driven game like UC, PD, etc are different in that regard.

I see and understand what Phil is trying to do, but I would imagine that the XBOX demographic wants mostly male protagonists in their games. That’s one reason I really question how how well Perfect Dark and Hellblade 2 are going to do.

You bring up The Last of Us 2 and say the I'm replying garbage? What it comes down to is the fight against Marxist ideologies and to keep meritocracy. Equal opportunity. Does every game, tv show, film and comic franchise merit enough to turn their backs on the audiences that built them? Sony is known to give developers, especially someone like Neil and naughty dog as a whole freedom in their development. The last of us 2 is a piece media Neil and the folks at naughty dog wanted to make, and the creatives behind it were happy with the result. Again, turning your back on the audience that built you up in search of larger markets and more sales is literally as capitalistic as you can get. Is Ford communist for making an electric Ford truck? I am in the us, and again, I sense that you sound like an utter moron.

Corporations choosing to do as they please, build whatever pr or image they want in search of more money is, for the final time, extremely capitalistic. Corporate media accounts changing their Twitter pic to a pride flag during pride month so the lgbt community may choose to spend more money there is not communism. Please stop replying with garbage, literally making my head hurt trying to figure out how one can have such a laughably incorrect take.

I fully expect another reply repeating the same phrases and key words over and over as if you’ve made a half valid point with them, can’t wait.

The Truth About Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Critical Race Theory (pasreport.com)

The only concern in your response was, "They still have the least diverse line up of any publisher or platform holder whether you wanna talk race, gender, genre, or perspective.". My response is that it's not about your agenda of dirthity and inclusion. That's all you people care about. You want to push your ideologies over what the creator's vision is. That's bullshit. You're bullshit. What color is your hair right now, Ronazokii?

My response is that it's not about your agenda of dirthity and inclusion. That's all you people care about. You want to push your ideologies over what the creator's vision is. That's bullshit. You're bullshit. What color is your hair right now, Ronazokii?
That article just highlights that the author of the article does not understand CRT.

Also just saw another usage of that stupid phrase. Time to put this thread in ignore.

>Professor Giordano has a passion that led him to start The P.A.S. Report Podcast, and that’s why The P.A.S. Report Podcast has become one of the top conservative podcasts around. Sick of a liberal media industrial complex that wants to dictate how to think, Professor Giordano began The Podcast because of his unique ability to break down complex political issues and explain those issues in a way that appeals to everyday Americans. By introducing facts, a conservative perspective, and quality analysis, the listeners can come to their own conclusions.

Yes a blatantly bias podcast whose website plastered my phone with church and supplement ads that look straight from the 90s, whose host takes Charlie Kirk seriously which I don’t care how red or what you are is one of the dumbest figures in politics is definitely where I should educate myself.

I’ll one up you and just link an explanation of the differences between communism and capitalism that even a 5th grader with a learning disability should be able to grasp https://keydifferences.com/difference-between-capitalism-and-communism.html

Communism vs capitalism isn’t a theory or idea, we have definitions for both of those things.

And do yourself a favor amigo, whatever side you are it’s a great idea to step away from the outrage cycle both political sides produce and focus on more nuanced and fact driven information.

They could have made the playable character a chocobo, all that matters is gameplay.

That podcast was in the top 5 Goolgle searches. I've never seen it before I skimmed it for a quick example of many to link. So, what color is it? Be honest...
