Phil Spencer Interview with Stephen Totilo - Biggest goal is to reach a larger audience for Xbox Game Studios

Riky

Because PS5 is the largest next gen console base…?

This isn’t rocket science

It's obviously beyond you.

I just said that first party next gen games can be played on a bigger install base on Xbox.

PS5 18 million.
Xbox Series 13 million
Xbox One through Xcloud 55 million.

You can't play Rift Apart on PS4 at all, you will be able to play Starfield on Xbox One.

Is it possible Phil is talking in Xboxnese? Where only those born and bread on Xbox understand the lingo?!?
Must be. We live in a post truth society where words no longer mean what they mean.

Xbox head: Bethesda purchase wasn't to keep games away from other platforms

"I’ll just say to players out there who are playing Activision Blizzard games on Sony’s platform: It’s not our intent to pull communities away from that platform and we remained committed to that,” said Spencer.

Exclusives Are ‘Completely Counter To What Gaming Is About,’ Xbox’s Phil Spencer Says

I find it completely counter to what gaming is about to say that part of that is to lock people away from being able to experience those games. Or to force someone to buy my specific device on the day that I want them to go buy it, in order to partake in what gaming is about."

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Must be. We live in a post truth society where words no longer mean what they mean.

I mean if we're gonna copy a 2+ year old quote, might as well copy the whole thing then.

Don't want to give off the impression that we're doing selective quote pasting to mask any bias, do we ;)

Xbox head: Bethesda purchase wasn't to keep games away from other platforms

While each game's platforms will be decided on a case-by-case basis, Phil Spencer says Elder Scrolls doesn't need to be on PlayStation to recoup acquisition costs

I guess folks don't need to be concerned with MS/Bethesda's finances and how they'll make the money back afterall ...

How is he talking away the largest console base when the game is next gen only?
Because console sales aren’t stopping. PlayStation and Nintendo replace their 100 million selling consoles with new 100 million selling consoles. It’s just a matter of when. So unless the same company that put Skyrim on 3 generations of consoles stops doing that, it’s not a valid point.
Not really, it's "but how will he make those numbers without PS ? " and a side of "but why exclusive when the console doesn't have a large user base ?"
no. It’s, stop pretending it’s about making for xbox when it’s really about taking away from PlayStation and Nintendo.
the post I was talking about being quoted was referencing a 100 million plus existing install base, i-e the PS4, i-e a generation the game in question isn't even coming out on ... it's a completely pointless tangent.
100 million PlayStation users is inevitable. It’s rinse and repeat. Just a matter of when.
And if we're going to talk about prospective future sales of hardware/games over the next 5, 6 year, that also applies to all prospective sales on Xbox, Steam, Windows Store and more XCloud only users who don't have any of the previously mentioned platforms.

The door swings both ways, you can't talk about 'potential future PS sales' and exclusive 'potential future Xbox sales' from the argument.
hitching your fortunes to established user bases is not “future xbox sales” it’s making games available for platforms that aren’t PlayStation and Nintendo. 2 consoles.

It doesn't matter as Xbox will continue to sell too, PS5 would need to outsell Series X and S by over 55 million to reach a point the game could be played on a bigger install base, that's probably never.

Come on Frank, you buy studios, sell exclusives so you can reach a high number console sales too. What else are MS trying to do here lol ? Clearly they have aspirations to reach the sales highs of the 360 era.

Will that happen ? who knows. We'll find out.

no. It’s, stop pretending it’s about making for xbox when it’s really about taking away from PlayStation and Nintendo.

That's nothing but your own self-imposed thoughts on the matter.

Ok.I guess they'll reach that without Bethesda of Activision Blizzard games this time.

I can't fathom how you can talk about potentially increasing PS5 sales over time in one breath then dismiss the same point for Xbox in the next. It's like you either think, or want, Xbox sales to be completely stagnant through out the remaining generation.

That ain't gonna happen Frank.

They will sell more Xboxes, maybe in some months even more Xboxes than Playstations. It's inevitable.

All this proves is that he is literally contradicting himself. Just be honest.

No, he's quite plainly stating they may take games on a case by case basis. And the current slate of Bethesda games (Starfield, TESVI, Redfall) don't need to be released on other consoles.

Do you think MLB is coming on Xbox/Switch out of the generosity of Sony's hearts or their willingness to gain more sales by expanding that franchise to other platforms ?

No, MLB is literally forcing Sony's hand on it.

PS5 exclusives is a guarantee. Deviation and Haven will be on PC day one.

PS5 PS first party O&O studio games is the more questionable one but I agree with you.
I could see them only doing it day and date if they release their own store on PC, the cut in profits shared with Steam is not worth it imo.

I think it would be smart to release a PS store w/ Spartacus and First party exclusives day and date.

They would also potentially only put them on PC (Steam) 6 months to a year later to incentivize using their new store.

MS is doing it essentially (not identically to what i said) with the gamepass platform on PC and honestly Sony should do the same.

You can replace any “xgs” game that were purchased and apply that logic. Fallout 6 never did either. The title refers to getting xgs games into as many games as possible and the op mentions games that have traditionally been multi console games. The truth is that it’s more about taking away from PlayStation and Nintendo than it is about “reaching” as many as possible. It’s impossible to reach a full potential target when you eliminate exposure. By excluding the two console manufacturers that have dominated the industry for decades and generations, and have consistently sold 100 million consoles you are doing just that.

Just observing the utter disdain Phil's comments generate from a certain group from a safe distance.

I guess I can see why more folks from Nintendo or Sony don't make as many public statements as Phil does, folks really don't like corporate speak.

But Frank, they want Xbox to be a part of those 100 million selling consoles too, how better to do that then by putting out AAA exclusives on it ?

It's the snake eating its tail here.

Dont defend this. Pick your battles. This aint the hill you want to die on.

Just need to read between the lines of the smarmy executive speak.

"those playing Bethesda games right now" = current games, not going to remove them.. basically "water is wet" kind of statement.

"dont make you buy my specific device" = cloud/PC support.

All 1st party MS games do not require a specific device, are never exclusive to their console. from "day one" of release.

I'd respect Phil way more if he'd just spell it out; "yes this means games won't come to Playstation, but we support PC/cloud and feel that is less restrictive than a game exclusive to only 1 piece of hardware."

But he's a douchebag executive and they always speak in this sort of carefully crafted way... and it only hurts them, I don't get it.

Ok that franchise never appeared on any other console, better? Unlike say Street Fighter V and FF7R which had multiple entries on Xbox consoles but were moneyhatted. Or KOTOR remake which was actually an Xbox console exclusive......
Also not all PS and Nintendo consoles sold 100 million. PS3, Vita, PSP, N64, Gamecube and Wii U blow a hole in that statement.

Point is how many of those PS5 owners own a mobile phone, Tablet or PC.....they can all play Starfield if they want to.

They’re trying to take away. They’re not creating exclusives. At least not yet. Starfield started production as a multi console release and would be if there was a contract in place. The rest of the games we know will release have always been on multiple consoles

Absolutely. That’s the power of their brand and the entire point. If phil really wants to put “his” games in as many gamers hands as possible, why not a company that can reach 100 million console sales WITHOUT the games you just spent 80 Billion dollars on so that you could HOPE to sell 100 million consoles?

I never said that. I just know that PlayStation and Nintendo will sell their 100 million. So, if it’s about beating them then, great. But if it’s about reaching as many gamers as possible youre not genuinely doing that by excluding those 2 brands.

Phil is a cancer on the industry. Pretending playstation isn't their competition and pretending exclusives are bad and then buying publishers and making them exclusive.

The sad part is so many fall for his billion dollar PR machine. Although maybe they just blindly follow it because how can anyone be that dumb..

The reality is MS escalated third party timed exclusive deals back in the 360 days. Maybe don't retaliate with the ps4 and they retaliated hard. Then he cries and pretends its bad trying to make sony look like the bad guy.

Now this gen he escalates that making entire publishers exclusive. What a snake.

Well, if they consider play for 10 minutes to an hour played, sure, since those will be the vast majority or players.
That's some sweeping generalisation right there. If you want to validate a "play" as being some arbitrary number of hours then you are getting into the ridiculous. To contrast against that, there are a lot of collectors who buy two copies of a game so that they can keep one shrink wrapped. Would it be right to make a statement that 50% of games sold never get played?

Point is how many of those PS5 owners own a mobile phone, Tablet or PC.....they can all play Starfield if they want to.

Release new games in series like Banjo Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot, Crash Team Racing, Spyro, and Killer Instict, just don't pawn these games off to low tier "cheap as you can get" developers....not to mention don't botch the forthcoming Perfect Dark, and then you have my attention MS.

He's playing the waiting game, obviously.

Starfield will be his first major experiment. If he sees a significant boost in X/S sales and Gamepass subs, then of course he's going to leverage exclusives for all they're worth. Nothing will be off the table, including CoD.

If it looks like it's going to be more practical to sell to PlayStation and Switch, then that's what he'll do.

I think his biggest goal should be making Xbox first party studios as good as Playstation first party studios, because they aren't even close yet.
Playstation first party are the best at a subset of a single genre. Xbox have way better FPS, RPG, SIM, RTS, TPS and Arcade Racer studios amongst many others. XBGS are objectively better than Playstation in a wider variety of genres and were by far the best rated publisher for 2021.

It's obviously beyond you.

I just said that first party next gen games can be played on a bigger install base on Xbox.

I love the mental gymnastics you had to jump through to equate xCloud’s userbase to PS5, as if they are even remotely comparable

Might as well include xCloud on the billions of PCs and phones while you’re at it, as if that’s some sort of suitable replacement in the market despite most core gamers actively playing on dedicated hardware like consoles instead

Don’t forget the boogeyman.
I think he’s upset that people want to spend money on games and choose an ecosystem rather than be forced to choose one with forced exclusivity. His mind went pretzel looking at people willing to spend $70 or $60 on new releases or re-released games and still have his console outsold consistently, and try to come up with more and more solutions that don’t work.
You guys can keep spinning this as much as you want with pretzel logic. Instead of paying to keep a game off a system, its better to own the studio that makes the game and decide where it lives. bottom line.

Get back to me when Street Fighter V and FF7R arrive on Xbox, I'm sure Sony actually paid to extend the FF7R lock out just to keep it off Xbox. Is there a guarantee that Starfield will never appear on a Sony console?

Reach is do people own a device that can play the game, if you own a Mobile phone, a tablet or a PC you can. That is the biggest reach in the history of gaming.

I suspect it will surpass this number. Because not only Game Pass will be bigger by then, more consoles will be sold and people who used to play BGS games on other platforms (unlike Forza and Horizon) will try it one way or another.

But of course. There was takes where a person claimed that he cannot play the game if it is released on Xbox

Not surprised at all. I have a friend who told me Xbox has no games but yet every single game he owned for his PS4 were on the Xbox One.

How was it a fanboy question? Pretty sure I made it clear making Starfield Xbox only doesn't bother me as I'll play it on my Xbox.
Why ask the question then? Do you not understand the concept of 1st party title? Why does it bother you so much that said games won't be in the Playstation ecosystem?

Well, I am shocked.

I really dont understand why people would spend $70 billion (and even 3.6 billion for one game in Sonys case) to keep games multiplatform, but maybe he is worried about Lina Khan or maybe the Bungie acquisition and threat of other Sony acquisitions softened his stance. I still think that if he wanted content, Square, Ubisoft, Capcom and Take2 combined wouldve cost the same and he wouldve gotten more content to fill Gamepass than one cod game a year.

But we have to take his word for it, and if he says he is going to put them on Playstation beyond the current agreements we have no choice but to believe him.

Just like how people twisted the "believe in generation" talk from Jim, people are twisting Phil's words.

He won't take away games, which have been on the platform before. You know, games, which the publisher released on that console. There was never a future game at all.

Unless Phil specifically said future games, he isnt taking away games at all.

Plus those games are on PC. If somebody doesn't like xbox at all, they can just get a gaming pc, and play them on steam.

It’s funny how in the face all of those are and then when we call out Phil’s lies and BS PR stunts, people rage.
People don't rage, because of those lies. People rage, because stupid comments gets thrown out on these arguments.

Phil is a business man. He can sly talks. But one thing is clear, what he says are all vague, and open for interpretation. But the end product is simple. Those games are exclusive to gamepass. And it will only be released on devices which gamepass exist.

This isn't about xbox anymore, but gamepass. Only way other consoles can get the game, is to let them put gamepass on their console. They won't allow that thing on their store, since it eats up their 3rd party revenue.

So starfield is counter to gaming. Got it.
Isn't starfield on PC?

What you arguing is about a console, which is competitor to the owner of that game.

Starfield at this point, is xbox 1st party game. It will be treated as spiderman, and wolverine to Sony.
