Imagine being certain that a Microsoft owned studio will release their future games on the competitors platform, just because they are honoring a contract.

You are 100 percent sure that these two games will never get released on Xbox, yet you are also 100 percent sure that their future games like es and Fallout will release on PlayStation.

The denial is real.
You’re quoting every one of my posts, but apparently didn’t read or comprehend any.
Ghostwire and deathloop will, and have to, release on PS5 exclusively. There are no other games from the 7.5 billion deal with a known release window, let alone a release date. So, because they are obligated, Msoft, who made this purchase to expand their catalog of games, has to release not one, but 2 games exclusively on PS5 for a minimum of one year while not a single game from that deal is out for xb. It’s a timed console exclusive. We don’t know when it will be available on another console. Just pc. So, spending 7.5 billion dollars and having your main competitor benefit from that deal well before you have even one release is where we are at.
Now based on that, do you think that:
A.phil is doing this out of the goodness of his heart.l?
B. Is looking to see how many units these releases sell on PS5 before committing to releasing or not releasing zenimax games on other consoles in the future?
C. he HAS to do it and, based the fact that he’s a business man, it sticking in his craw that PlayStation gets to have an exclusive year of prima nocta with the xb’s new wife?

You decide.

Besides your wet dreams, why do they have to do this. Unless you work from one of these companies, you don't know shit about if it's timed exclusive or not.

Also, if they originally were, Microsoft could lay money on the table to Sony to make it timed exclusive only, or even make it release on Xbox.

Oh, I forgot. Only Microsoft likes money. Sony does everything for the goodness in their hearts. Wait, that sounds oddly familiar...

Hold up, didn't you say that neither of these games will hit Xbox? Now I'm getting confused.

It’s a timed console exclusive. We don’t know when it will be available on another console. Just pc. So, spending 7.5 billion dollars and having your main competitor benefit from that deal well before you have even one release is where we are at.
And in what way will it hurt Microsoft that these games are released on PS5? Does Sony steal all the money from the sold copies or what?
This is pure fanboy fuel.

Now based on that, do you think that:
A.phil is doing this out of the goodness of his heart.l?
B. Is looking to see how many units these releases sell on PS5 before committing to releasing or not releasing zenimax games on other consoles in the future?

Neither. Phil is a business man, and respect the deals.

How could you say something like that to the love of your life? Why do you assume that your lover would go out with Mr Xbox?

Or maybe you are into that stuff Mr cuck?

Fuck, I'm turning... Need to get away from this shit...

Who bought gold at full price? I always would get mine for 30$ due to Christmas sales. Never pay full price for PS+ or Gold/Gamepass. They can be had for cheaper during Christmas/spring sales.

I have told everybody I know who plays games that isn't a forum goer to look for PS+ or Live during Christmas because they always throw them on sale.

Most everybody buys it at full price. Only people on forums like us look for deals on cdkeys and the like. We get it guys, you can find deals for anything. People use coupons for their groceries too, it doesn't affect the fact that most everyone doesn't.

I do. It is
Getting? You mean still.

More exclusive games mean more console sales. See last gen.

So option C. I agree, he HAS to
Man, its been entertaining watching you bend in all these bizarre positions to try and convince yourself MS is going to buy a publishing arm for billions and share those IPs with Sony to help them become the market leader.........again. LMAO!

I hope you're gonna be okay when you see it for yourself. PHil is trying to let fans down easy while they complete the deal. It shouldnt take this man coming out directly to say, "Yes! Bethesda and all IPs are exclusive to our platform". But its coming....you can count on it.

It's clear that they're honouring existing contracts. Does that 'stick in his craw'? Probably not as much as you would like, he's not new to this, he knows how it works. Even if they could break the contracts I don't think they would, it's not good PR.

On the other hand, if he's really pissed, he might take any money made from both timed PS5 exclusives and put it toward buying Ubisoft. :)

it’s not so much having to release the 2 games. It’s not having anything from that deal anywhere close to releasing AND having to release those games. One of them is a shinji mikami game that could very well be a system seller. We’ll see. I only played evil within from any of the games listed so the mikami games are the ones I’d miss. Means more to me

I dont think ms moving gamepass onto rival consoles is what they want. Its a scary proposition, one day they say gamepass is ok, the next they say they want 40% of the revenue or they pull it. Its a very vulnerable place to be, and a bad business decision vs controlling as much of the platform as possible.

Not only what you stated here but, can you imagine Microsoft buying a company like Zenimax for 7.5 billion dollars to fix their 1st party problems and then they still give Sony the games too? That would weaken the brand probably worse than it was before the acquisition. That would effectively make them a 3rd party publisher and people would steer clear from Xbox. No way they give up any big exclusives to the competition. For 7.5 billion they bought a shit load of confidence from gamers. They aint giving that up! Not a chance.

The people who talk gamepass on PS5 don't bother to back up the economic non starter it is. Sony taking 30% makes gamepass a big money loser on the playstation ecosystem. I'm sure Microsoft spent 7.5 billion dollars to lose money and Sony make all the money smh. I guess Microsoft is a charity now give Sony the profits while taking a bath.

Not to mention Sony wouldnt give Microsoft a got damn thing back in return. Not only would GP be a financial loss, but Sony would effectively keep their games AND get Xbox games too. Again, no way. You gotta be on dat banger crack to believe that shit.

Even me being fully aware and active gamer on communities I just couldn't give a fuck. It comes out of my card yearly, I'm not in the situation where I need to be wasting time saving a few bucks. Every single person I know is like this, they buy their kids the giftcards or linked to their accounts yearly. The vast vast vast majority of PS and Xbox users pay full freight.

Wonder if the purchase valuation was for only 50% of the sales revenue. That’s what exclusivity would do at the very least in cutting out the PS eco system.

I guess Ms is expecting to sell twice the consoles and xclouds of the PS5? 😂

Wonder what happens if it doesn't errr....happen.

More like Microsoft didn't want to lose more games to Sony or Amazon.
that’s why those 2 exclusives are a tough pill. It’s such a crucial time for them. Their release schedule over that period could use those 2 games. It would look better for them if the PS5 exclusives were later and after there were some releases from that 7.5 billion purchase. On one hand, you need to make that big a purchase to give your library the boost it needs. On the other, you won’t be seeing new releases from that purchase for 2 or 3 years.

You realize they now have 23 studios, right?? And more coming. Nadella literally announced it himself.

What other side?

MS is going for the whole pie. PlayStation is small compared to the whole.

If MS is betting on xcloud to become synonymous with mobile gaming in the next decade they need to give Phil a gold star.

I used to think there may be something to it with all the hoopla from google etc. first to admit I was smoking the crack pipe. Now reality has set in, it’s a nothing burger.

are there any franchises from that deal that have games that push the limits technologically or play so fast or at high frame rates that won’t be able to be played on tablets? It’s probably a good idea to put them on mobile or streaming.

My anonymous inside dev sources at major studios told me that the games are definitely exclusive to Xbox. They also said that the games will now run better than if they had to run on a 10TF system too.

The guy never mentioned other platforms, that "quote" has always meant Xbox, PC and xCloud.
The quote on the OP's web page is:

"This deal was not done to take games away from another player base like that. Nowhere in the documentation that we put together was: ‘How do we keep other players from playing these games?’ We want more people to be able to play games, not fewer people to be able to go play games."

... specifically when asked about TES on Playstation. He is directly addressing other platforms, obviously the Xbox PR guy has put a spin on it, it's his job, I'm just calling out the broad-claim bullshit of "we want more people to be able to play games". No, they don't.

They are 100% betting on that and it's why I think in 10 years Xbox is not going to exist at MS as it's going to flop hard relative to expectations.

No one said Ghostwire and Deathloop are 1-year timed exclusives. Plus, Deathloop was delayed, and the contract stipulations may not have covered an extension of the exclusivity period in light of an unforeseen delay. Contracts can also be legally changed over time.

It’s a timed console exclusive. We don’t know when it will be available on another console. Just pc. So, spending 7.5 billion dollars and having your main competitor benefit from that deal well before you have even one release is where we are at.
A lot of assumption going on here but not a lot in terms of logic. Once again, contracts are malleable; even if they are broken and the affected party files lawsuit, more often than not settlements are reached out of court.

I'm not saying that's what is going to happen with either Death Loop of Ghostwire, but it's not unprecedented. Loopholes may also exist in the contracts allowing for relatively scott-free breakage from the agreed-upon timed exclusivity terms (such as with the Death Loop delay I mentioned earlier), that can also be enforced.

You decide.
The end goal with MS is to drive GamePass subscriptions and investments into the Xbox ecosystem. If they start porting their big Zenimax games to PlayStation, that conditions PS-only players to A): simply wait for PS versions of those games (making PS versions is additional dev costs to be incurred) and (more damning) B): not invest in the Xbox ecosystem beyond buying that Bethesda/Zenimax game on PS, which MS already loses a 30% cut from to Sony. This also means them losing on an otherwise likely Xbox system purchase and/or Gamepass subscriber, which completely defeats MS's goal to expand their business model and ecosystem in the first place.

For those reasons alone, your B scenario is not in effect here. The sooner MS were to do that is the sooner they lose leverage for pushing Gamepass and the Xbox ecosystem, and become a 3rd-party publisher, which is at odds to their own stated plans for remaining in console hardware and planning for future systems. Your C scenario is only true if there aren't contractual loopholes to exploit, and I already provided an example of one that technically CAN be used as an exploit (delay the game, for justified reasons). Your A scenario obviously doesn't apply, but I know it's there mainly for tongue-in-cheek.

The quote on the OP's web page is:

"This deal was not done to take games away from another player base like that. Nowhere in the documentation that we put together was: ‘How do we keep other players from playing these games?’ We want more people to be able to play games, not fewer people to be able to go play games."

Why is it MS's fault if there are extreme PS loyalists (who make up a fringe of the PS community btw) who pretend their only options to game are a PlayStation or an Xbox? When Phil said they weren't taking games away from people, they were correct. They obviously want people to invest in their ecosystem, but the fact that ecosystem also includes PC and mobile, and has inexpensive options for entry, makes the level of choice for regular gamers who may've mainly been in the PS ecosystem but still want to play these games, to do so in ways that don't necessarily involving spending $500 or even $300 on new hardware.

I think your problem is you only think of platform as a console. For Sony that might be the case, but it isn't with MS and that's been for a few years now. MS's use of a term like "platform" is more in reference to an ecosystem, and Xbox consoles are one part of that ecosystem. We can't suddenly pretend that most people don't have smartphones, tablets, or at least decent-ish PCs either, and MS are providing their games on those devices (either natively or through streaming in the case of mobile) as well, with means of access that are relatively cheap compared to buying the game outright each and every time.

The options are there, it's just some console extremists have tunnel vision.

The writing is on the wall, Stadia came hard as a new platform. Fizzled.

Xcloud is actually out, where’s the sentiment? Nowhere. It’s not even considered anything but a free bonus to gamepass. No one is actually using it.

Seems Sony are the only ones that know the deal. Been sitting on the service for years without fanfare. They knew full well it’s a fools errand, at least for the foreseeable future. And they had the apps even on tv’s already. Canceled.

So we swing around to Bethesda and publishing to a gaming community with a big chunk taken out. So either MS is expecting to exponentially grow their exposure, or they need to keep status quo to make their investment make sense.

Oh come off it. This isn't about console extremists, it's about the millions and millions of regular console users who played and loved Skyrim on their PS4s and are now going to be forced to do one of the following if they want to play the next entry:
  • Either completely move to Xbox once they realise what's going on, or shell out for an entire additional system
  • Play it on their tiny phone screens and pay a monthly fee to stream the game
  • Assuming they have a basic laptop, which many people don't, because they don't need them in 2020, pay a monthly fee to stream the game and wire it into their TV every time
  • Buy a dedicated gaming PC
None of which are remotely good options compared to "buy the game for their chosen platform". It's not a new practice, and I'm not holding one company above another, but defending any of the above options as simple alternatives is really snooty. You and I aren't the public, we're on a video game forum, for them it's not as simple as "just join another platform bro".

Also this:

Why is it MS's fault if there are extreme PS loyalists (who make up a fringe of the PS community btw) who pretend their only options to game are a PlayStation or an Xbox?
Is a gigantic crock of shit, where exactly is the source that says the 112+ million PS4 owners who only ever play PS4 are a "fringe"? Are you joking?

Plenty of people here have and plenty of websites have too.

that already has happened and the year of exclusivity was pushed along with it. A deals a deal. But if they did attempt to keep the 2 exclusive games off of PS5 it would further cement my belief that it’s sticking in his craw. Otherwise, just let them have it. No big deal, right?
either way, Msoft spending 7.5 billion ends up a short term coup for Sony. They either get the exclusives during a crucial time, or, Msoft publicly goes back on their word and appear weak.

This is a funny thread, i don't think PS folk have grasped the fact they are not this massive market that xbox cannot lose.
Xbox + PC vastly outnumbers PlayStation, throw in Switch ownership, x cloud and Xbox exclusives already on the platform, i can see streaming games pass coming too. And then the mobile market.

Reminds me of the entertainment giant called Blockbuster Video.

Highly doubt that's how MS would see it.. "well now we must release on Playstation."

MS has no interest in being yet another 3rd party publisher; the money is in platforms and selling tech.

If their platforms and tech don't become massive, they'll almost certainly just exit the industry IMO. They were being pushed that direction not that long ago, and they'll get pushed back if xCloud doesn't become huge... and I mean huge, not just "well some people who are already Xbox gamers use it."

I'm confused how this clarifies anything. He still talked out both sides of his mouth.

The question is do they HAVE to release on PlayStation? Obviously he will always say no to that question.

But he also says they want the games to be available to people to play however they want to play.

This is just typical Phil Spencer talking and not saying anything. The most "real" thing he said was that final line, "Whatever that means". That line should be implied to the end of every Phil Spencer interview.

I'd say it roughly translates to "no games on PlayStation, but you can play on xbox, PC, and via x cloud on everything else that has an Internet connection.

Maybe that's what will happen, but when saying, "we don't want to take games away from anyone", I don't take this as confirmation of that.

Tin foil hat time:

Microsoft bought bethesda on the high because rival trillion dollar company amazon was sniffing around for a publisher to buy. Its not coincidence that the zenimax acquisition was announced the same week Luna from amazon was announced. Microsoft has already said they see google and amazon as their competitors in terms of cloud streaming services. Console gaming IE xbox, nintendo, sony will become a neutral to microsoft like PC is to most publishers and eventually port most if not all of their games to console. Maybe some games will be timed exclusive or have exclusive dlc, but thats as far as i think Microsoft is willing to go with it. The deal doesn't even go through until next year, do you think all those studios just suddenly through their ps5 devkits in the trash? I think not.
