PC Gamer: Genshin Impact grosses over $100m, recoups development costs in two weeks

What dictates its success?

MiHoYo's Genshin Impact has grossed over $100m since it launched globally two weeks ago, a huge global success for a game from out of China. Data from several sources confirms that the game has made upwards of $100 million US in 12 days. The game's development budget was reported to be in the range of $100 million, so at this point it looks like miHoYo has recouped that cost and might just be making money.

Genshin Impact is free-to-play, but funded by a system of in-game "gacha-style" gambling loot boxes. Our Steven Messner called it the "dark horse of 2020" just after it launched. It's an open world RPG with a lot of appeal and a nice cel-shaded graphical style, as well as a heap of stuff to do. It seems like a good game, especially at the price of free but it's definitely one to avoid if you have poor impulse control in free games. The Washington Post published an editorial on the subject saying that it was "gambling real-world cash in a casino where the house always wins."

Article here: Click me

Genshin Impact is available on PC and PS4 (Nintendo Switch in the future). It's free to play.

What do you think? Have you played it? Do you like it? Are the microtransactions bad? Discuss.

Would buy in an instant if it were launched traditionally with a full price tag. This F2P shit with mtx is off putting, too bad since the game looks really fucking good.

I think a lot of people are giving this a go exactly because of its free-to-play nature. The hook being MTX. But these type of games would get brushed aside at the $60 tag unless heavily marketed. I think the strategy paid off for them.

I legitimately think it's a better game than BotW in most aspects. Plus, the fact that it's an ongoing game means there will be tons of content in the future - and it's REAL CONTENT, not some auto-battle bullshit like most gacha F2P games are where the game virtually plays itself ad nauseum.

Also, it's not on Switch yet.

It has that?
No, people are just stupid and believe the first clickbait article they read

I'll fix that.

What I read from the PC gamer article is that it has a chat filter for certain words like Hong Kong and Putin etc... the concept is no different than chat filters for cuzz words in MMO's like Runescape. Although here the intent is clearly political.

BOTW is the real deal this is just a cheap clone, believe what you will but there is proof of it running in the background even after shutting it down.
Play it all you want.

It was fixed within 3 hours, fool. Do your due diligence and follow up on your claims before you make an ass out of yourself further

Also, this "cheap clone" does most things better than BotW did, looks better, and even runs better on a damn phone lol

The only things that BotW does better are having an option to use a shield and chopping down trees lol

Better in Genshin:
Secrets that result in actual rewards, not just Korok turds
Elemental combat
Character variety
NO WEAPON DURABILITY
Weather doesn't fuck up your climbing
An actual storyline, not pre-rendered cinematics that you occasionally unlock from memories

I can go on but I have a feeling that this is falling on deaf ears, considering your avatar lol

Not shocked. It looks like a fun game and the team did a great job on making the gameplay fun and responsive. I wish we had an online RPG like this back when I had the time to even care about em. I can see why its so popular.

Put it back in your pants jackass, Do you know how to read ?
I said when it first came out and that's all I needed to hear and it shouldn't of been there to begin with.
So you say it was "fixed":pie_roffles::pie_roffles::pie_roffles: but that just proves what I first stated was true that something was there that had to be fixed. Stop being a tool.

IMHO, world exploration is still weak compared to BOTW. the puzzles are simplistic. but the content package is enormous. I'm at AR36. yet, every day i can still find something new while farming materials.

It's a shame it's F2P with Gacha mechanics. Had this been a regular $60 I'd be interested.

But good for them and the people who enjoy the game. As a live service this should mean ongoing support for the foreseeable future.

How long till EA, activions and Ubisoft frantically change their entire lineup to follow the new trend: games as a service as a waifu

It's gonna take some miracle to happen before these publishers willing to make attractive waifus. I'm quite curious what kind of abomination Bioware will make for the next dragon age and call them females lol.

Yes and no. Originally, it installed a tiny program into your Windows Registry to prevent cheating and the program would still run even if you weren't playing the game. After enough people complained, they updated it so it now only runs while you are playing the game.

I would feel dirty playing a ripoff game from China.

Asking me if I know how to read when you didn't read beyond the first report is Grade A Stupidity. Even further stupidity: repeating something that is clearly false and/or out of date.
Here's some reading material for you to educate yourself:

Anyway, it's clear you're biased against the game given your avatar and general attitude, and it's quite pathetic.

I'm aware. My issue is that there are certain people who continue to repeat outdated info and make asses of themselves.
And again, it was fixed with record speed (within 3 hours of the above blog post I linked).

This is exactly why we don't need a price hike from $60 to $70 for games. People keep saying that game prices have to go up because of inflation. Then why do I keep seeing games making their money back within days or weeks after they are released?

Yeah, the puzzles are simplistic but I don't recall them being very complex in BotW either. A large majority of "puzzles" in the BotW overworld consisted of looking under rocks and the like. The puzzle dungeons, however, are an entirely different story. I should have put those in my "things that BotW does better" list as well!
As for world exploration, I don't think I can agree that its weaker. I'm AR35 and I still stumble across secrets every day, and like I said in the other post, these secrets result in actual loot and/or new quests! In BotW, those secrets usually just amount to Korok turds that will eventually become something helpful (bag space, if I remember correctly?).
But yeah, just thinking about how the world will expand and how much more there will be to explore excites me. The game can even potentially expand beyond the current planet, considering the game describes the main character as a Traveler between worlds.

Sure whatever you say , I made the decision that the spyware they added was too intrusive for my taste .
Again do you know how to read ? I made that determination and will stick with it .
I changed my avatar for Halloween dumbass not because of some perceived bias but keep on sleeping with your CCP waifu body pillow and continue dreaming she is the real deal.

I've been having fun with it. It's not quite as polished/interesting as Zelda, but for a free to play rip-off it's not bad at all. Since a lot of the combat and skills have to do with the elements, I expected more puzzle solving like in Zelda, where you use fire to create updrafts, cut down trees to funtion as bridges etc. but the game engine isn't quite refined enough for those kind of physics, apparently. Still, it's a huge world to explore, and you're always finding small things to do and new rewards to work towards.

The F2P aspect can be a blessing and a curse. There is that rewarding feeling when you pull a rare character, but when you're farming gems for hours, just to pull literal trash, it feels pretty bad. Like I said in the OT, right now there's a bunch of events going on that give you a bunch of rolls for free... but after that's dried up, the game seems to be dripfeeding currency. Even though it's pretty subtle, the game still tries to get you to spend money in that way.

Still, I'd say give it a shot if it seems interesting to you. It's free anyway.

???
I'm not trying to convince you to play it, you moron. I'm trying to get you to stop making an ass out of yourself with your blatantly false info and stupid comments and you keep at it lmao
This is like arguing with someone on Twitter who just parrots something false/outdated... and then they get defensive instead of admitting fault lol

while this is good, i hope this not gonna sparked new trend botw-esque f2p gacha game in future. since others company out there(especially chinese) might perceive this as new easy cash grab opportunities and gave birth of new wave of copycat f2p waifu gacha game that nobody can guarantee how the quality of those game gonna be.

People commenting on a game that they haven't even played ITT. Also, why are we calling them "waifus"? This is a Chinese game. Or are we using that term for all animated female characters now?

To be fair though, and looking at this particular instance.

I'd much rather take a $10 prince increase than seeing big budget games shift to a grind and lootbox heavy monetisation system like the one in this.

And you need to keep in mind that for big projects being profitable is just the ground floor. It's not about making a profit or not, it's about how big of a profit it makes.

Excuse me grammar Nazi, I never studied English or went to school in the USA so like I really give a shit if it‘s you’re or your.
You said it yourself brainlet
“Just keep on truckin and believing all the clickbait that comes across your screen.“

What a friutcake! I’m done here and if you want to continue this privately that’s fine but how much is China paying you in Resin to defend this clone of a game.

because the art style and character design is anime/manga inspired.

Its a good game. I don't get the hate. I just 'wish' @SLoWMoTIoN and Danjin44 Danjin44 stop giving them money.
I'm F2P.

Because they haven't played it. If anything it has too many males.

Just played 15 minutes.

I can't be bothered. I barely got through Breath of the Wild. The last 10 hours felt like a chore for me. This feels like 7 parts BotW with 3 parts water.

I probably would have enjoyed this at 15 but...
