You realize we have it better (WAY BETTER) now than when PS4 launched?

I'd call them even TBH - some interesting games, but nothing people will remember after a year or two. As always, the heavy hitters will start appearing ~3 years after launch.

Good grief, it's nothing fucking like it.

XBox One was a disaster straight out of the gate. It was comprehensively hammered by Ps4 from even before release, thanks to the godawful decisions made by the XBox executives. It never recovered across the whole generation. MS were playing catch up (and failing to do so) for the whole gen.

Sony have done a few questionable things recently, and the halo has definitely slipped, but to compare where Playstation is now to where XBox was then is laughable. We're in the middle of a pandemic, which has made things difficult for everyone. Sure, Jim Ryan is fostering a culture of risk aversity that may bite Sony on the arse at some point, but right now they are still top dog. There's really no comparison. MS are still behind, by thankfully making in-roads by making smart decisions.

Stop thinking what you see on social media is reflective of reality. The only thing you can trust is hard numbers and hard facts, and I fully expect the Ps5 to be selling like bastard hot cakes for the next few years. Hopefully, XBox will too and we'll get decent competition which benefits all of us.

No. Sony is a whole other beast in comparison. A bad beast, yes, but different

Both don't have a big game, so that's a thing. Still, Microsoft is winning (by little) because of GamePass - if was the contrary, Sonyboys were slamming Xbox, so there's hypocrisy too

Some instances are going to be more difficult than others, but for the latter for example, can't they just have a higher max swinging speed on the PS5? I would assume going forward, it will be PS5-focused development, and then they figure out how to change the game to make it work on PS4. Sony's devs are so good, they'll always find a way to make it work.

I think these initial games are so close to the start of the generation too, that we'll easily get another game at least from all of these studios which is a full PS5 exclusive.

No they can't without altering the core gameplay. Take a mission where you have to follow a car, for example. Does the car also drive faster than? Or other enemies?

I'd call them even TBH - some interesting games, but nothing people will remember after a year or two. As always, the heavy hitters will start appearing ~3 years after launch.

Nah, they're not even close. There was no BC/cross-gen. Below are the PS4's launch titles published by Sony. Only big game is Killzone and it wasn't extremely good. It was okay, but nothing special gameplay-wise. inFamous Second Son launched in March and July gave us TLoU Remastered.

Flower
Killzone Shadow Fall
Knack
Resogun
Sound Shapes
Escape Plan
Flow

PS5:
Astro Bot free and pre-installed
Demon's Souls (92 Metacritic)
Miles Morales
Spider-Man Remastered
Sackboy
Bugsnax
The Pathless
Godfall

Then right after we got games like Destruction Allstars, Oddworld Soulstorm, Maneater PS5 And Control UE with PS Plus. We got 60fps versions of Days Gone and Ghost of Tsushima and we're getting full PS5 exclusives like Returnal and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart in April and June. Not to mention multiplatform is also a lot better right now with AC Valhalla, Watch Dogs Legion, Immortals Fenyx Rising and a lot more I'm probably missing.

From all your mentioned PS5 titles only Miles Morales is a worthy game IMO, the rest is just a filler or old games with FPS boost, and other than upcoming R&C I really don't see any meaningful game until Q4 where all the big 3rd party games arrive, with possibly new Battlefield once again seriously leaving the old consoles in the dust.

What’s happening with the external storage? Habve they updated any news on it?
External storage works for PS4 games on PS5. Do you mean the expansion storage slot?
I'd like to imagine there is a big debate whether to sell a certified NVME as some kind of N64 RAM pak.

I wouldn't buy an SSD in this climate with these prices anyway. It totally sucks they haven't provided any for those who might have already.

Tastes being subjective of course, and barring Demon's Souls and Miles, which could already be played on a PS3 and PS4 respectively, the PS4 had Resogun, which was better than any single thing the PS5 had at launch.

It’s more like early PS3, they are doing well because the ps4 did well similar to how the ps2 did well. It’s just they haven’t had any good news outside of sales. The problem is jim pretty much doesn’t seem interested in giving the ok to make AA smaller games anymore because it doesn’t make huge $$$. Which leaves out the variety of games that don’t usually provides. It also seems like Microsoft is funding more interested in funding smaller games.

Exactly. The massive difference between PS5 and Xbox One launches is Xbox One was a poorly designed and overpriced console from the start. When a major component of your console, that boost the price $100 over your competitor's price, is no longer even supported by the end of the generation then you've screwed up in a major way. This is not the position Sony is in at all. Sony has some self-inflicted wounds, but every single one of them are correctable without having change the hardware configuration which Phil Spencer was forced to do to stop the bleeding.

And as bad as the PR is right now for Sony, it pales in comparison to the nightmare Microsoft endured with the DRM, always on console fiasco. We are talking about mistakes that followed Xbox One all generation long.

I say it is the leader of each being out of touch with gamers not understanding what they want. Jim just took over a juggernaut near impossible to screw up. He is trying to EA Sony ie max out profits milk the user base. If Jim took over anything less than the House juggernaut it would lead to a disaster. Jim should thank God every day playstation has the most loyal fans in the world and he inherent a murders row of studios to pump out games to bail out his ass out.

PlayStation is now performing better than they or any other console maker ever perfomed in terms of revenue or in consoles sold, games sold, game subscription services sold, GOTY awards won and are the pioneers of VR and game streaming in console.

They also release more big and small exclusives every year than the other console makers, the games they publish sell better and are better rated than ever did before for them, most years they are a top 3 big publisher on Metacritic.

Even if in the middle of a pandemic and with supply issues, PS5 had a gaming history record console launch beating the PS4 gaming history record console launch. Their consoles are sold out globally and when stores receive new stock gets sold out in a few minutes, which leads to think record sales will continue specially once they get rid of the lack of semiconductors issue that doesn't allow them to increase their manufacturing and supply.

They mentioned that plan to continue growing most of their 1st party studios (who as of now each one of them work on multiple games at the same time), to make studio acquisitions, to port old PS4 (mentioned PS4, not PS5) games to PC and to be working on a next gen PS Now and PSVR2 to improve the areas where they can improve their first version we saw in the PS4 generation (but don't expect them to give away for free all their AAA day one, MS does this kamikaze strategy temporally because they are desperate to show some good metric).

They downsized a studio who wasn't capable of developing a single sales hit after decades of history and dozens of unprofitable games including the several recent ones that were a big money pit, in order to focus that studio into their team that made a better job recently and has a lot of potential.

They merged their regional marketing, 2nd party publishing and localization teams (not only the ones in Japan) to have a single, unified global vision and strategy for the console and all 1st and 2nd party games. This is something other very successful brands like Apple or many top publishers do, and helps to optimize costs and to be more effective, so with the same money they will get better results and will reduce paperwork and fights between regional offices.

Small, more experimental, country specific 2nd party full exclusive games now will be handled by Shuhei Yoshida as timed console exclusive indies, being cheaper and less risky for Sony, which allows them to help more exclusive indies for the same (or less) money, and also giving these devs a better deal because selfpublishing they earn a bigger revenue share, keep their IP and can earn extra revenue in other platforms, plus more creative freedom but still getting a huge marketing push from Sony.

So by all metrics they are doing a wonderful job and are on a growing trend, and have a strategy that makes sense to continue growing, dominating the market and releasing even more and better games than before. Maybe, and we still have to see how, in 5-10 years Microsoft may be an issue, but as of now Sony highly dominates them in all fronts including where MS is making their all-in bet: game subscriptions. Sony has way more subscribers and generate way more money with them.

They also have been very generous recently with the PS Plus Collection to welcome PS5 users with many of the best games of the best generation, and this spring they are giving away for free (no PS Plus required) around a dozen of great games including Ratchet and Horizon.

Sure, there are several noisy fanboys in the forums and the gaming press many of them screaming with fake concerns or being wrong because don't know or understand the full picture, but Sony is doing and will continue doing a great job.

While Xbox's long term prospects and current PR are both looking great I gotta say I'm not seeing what the OP is saying.

PS5 launched with new first party games, the best controller on the market and a capable next-gen system. Astrobot is the best next-gen game I've played so far and they have two huge exclusive releases coming around the corner. Why the doom?

Where I see weakness for Sony is the price differential in day/date releases on Game Pass. It makes PS5 look very expensive when you compare Outriders or MLB on both platforms day one. Sony will have to address this somehow because it's only going to get worse with many more examples to come.

Overall though, Sony will be fine and there is no doubt they have plans in the works to answer Game Pass directly and most likely some first / third party exclusives waiting in the wings to change the narrative.

It's a fake narrative, because it's nothing like it.

The most successful console of all time ends the generation with a bang in 2020, hit after hit. Its successor does a super hero landing on the market, making it all about it. People rave about the controller, they rave about exclusives like Demons Souls, the hype doesn't slow down, month after month of selling out in minutes. Even the accessories are the best selling products on the market.

Contrast that to that other one, that had a very underwhelming generation, with poor attach ratio, gamers last choice top to bottom and only survived on the back of the success of its previous successor. It had an horrible end of generation, just like its predecessor and its successor landed on the market butt naked, no exclusives. One of its skus is widely available.

But I'm supposed to stand here and say... yeah that rental service and that sku that isn't selling out even though it's COVID era, they really wrecking up the competition.

ok

Did PS5 sales suddenly tank and I just didn't hear about it? Ultimately that is the measure of success or failure. Last time I checked, PS5s were still extremely high in demand. If we are going to go down the "fanboy" route then it starts with pretending PS5 is doing poorly when it simply is not. I'm certainly no fan of Jim Ryan or what he has done, but the comparison here is between PS5 and Xbox One. Massive difference.

Bu bur David Jaffe..
He has his own personal opinion, as someone who has worked inside for a while in other times (he's nostalgic of these times), and has some friends inside who also have their own personal opinion. Including a few who would be good candidates to work on Herman's and Ryan's positions and I also think could do a good job.

He agrees that times changed and now as a company with huge budgets need to be more conservative with huge budgets and there is less room for too risky stuff. He loves Game Pass and thinks it would be great if Sony counters it with a improved PS Now and/or Plus, and he knows they are working on it. But also knows they are doing a great job without it.

He thinks that in terms of PR Sony should improve their communication with their fans, something MS adresses better, since they now are the cool kids even if haven't released a great exclusive for a while and for the next year or so they only have announced Halo and Sony is beating them in all fronts outside of not including cool games day one on GP.

He thinks that thinks like having to fire people and reducing a team, or cancel a game sucks, but like crunch is something that sometimes you have to do when it makes sense and that is ok, isn't a big drama as someone say.

And what are the flames in this scenario? Please do explain.

Sure

is the discontent that is growing in the Sony community. just open this forum, resetera or any other or twitter or just open some specialized outlet and read a lot of theirs news ... almost all with a negative tone and they are piling up a lot of doubts and perplexities. Those are the flames

Different opinion I guess. I think PS5's exclusive line-up is much stronger and I also think the multiplats are way better this time around, with the addition of some great BC titles. I'm playing much more games now then when PS4 was out. Only notable 3rd game back then was a souped up AC4. BF4 was fine, but now there are countless shooters you can choose from. The genre doesn't do anything for me.

Shut up, accept the fact that Sony has flaws who gives a flying fuck if the PS5 is successful but that does not excuse Sony for their recent actions. I bet you didn't expect that kind of response because I'm a person who says it like it is.

Last year was the same shit. PS5 still came out and dominated. Sony hasn't really said shit and wont say shit. At the end of the day, it's all about the games. PS5 ain't struggling with that.
People who loves this. It's really great for them.

For everyone else, this quote is a curse. They get ignored because people who outright legit this enjoy this, good for them. but also Sony defense force use this as the only argument since its the only thing sonys dominant at.

This hobby is all about gaming. I get it. But what did all this Sony praise give? A huge bunch of cinematic single player games.

Lucikly Sony has hit a gold mine doing the same over and over again.

But you have to say, after Ryan's multiple interview missteps/spins like "we believe in generations", "who would want to play those old games" etc. people have all the right to believe in those rumors.

In the 'we believe in generations' interview what he said is what they are doing and is working great: that they want games in PS5 take advantage of the next gen features like Dual Sense features, 3D audio, raytracing, super fast loading and so on.

But that they also will continue supporting PS4 for at least a couple or years or so after the PS5 launch because it has over 100M active users and knows that even if PS5 sells at record levels the big majority of players will still continue on PS4 after 2 or 3 years, so want to continue to keep them happy with new content.

The 'who would want to play those old game' etc. sentence has to be understood as an old PR statemanet of a regional executive whose opinion doesn't affect in if the company supports BC or not in a period where his company wasn't supporting BC so he was trying to justify his company's decision. The only think he does is -even if in a poor way- to support the company's PR stand on that topic at that time, which was to don't support BC because almost nobody was using it. Now PS5 has PS4 BC and in terms of PR BC is something cool, so he and the guy who is in the position he was back then say PS5 is cool and something great.

People who loves this. It's really great for them.

For everyone else, this quote is a curse. They get ignored because people who outright legit this enjoy this, good for them. but also Sony defense force use this as the only argument since its the only thing sonys dominant at.

All Sony games aren't the same. Sony also had a ton of exclusive 1st party, 2nd party, AAA 3rd party and indies of very wide array of different game types in PS4. Bigger and more diverse than MS and Nintendo. And Sony also invested more into new IPs and on expensive risky games (see stuff like Dreams, Death Stranding, The Last Guardian or the Quantic Dream games just to name a few).

PS5 will have an even bigger and more diverse exclusives line-up than they did in PS4. Just look at the first half a year or so of PS5: Morales, Astro, Sackboy, Demons, Destruction All Stars, Oddworld Soulstorm, MLB, Returnal, Ratchet, Guilty Gear, expanded/tweaked FFVIIR, Deathloop, Horizon, many cool indie games from popular devs...

He raised some good points. But clearly you couldn’t think of anything to say so you go down the fanboy route.
He didn't talk about ignorance. I can tell a lot of people here just call other people fanboys simply because they can't handle the facts on hand and criticism. I own all the consoles my boy, I'm not a 40-year-old guy who still cares about a company or licks the boot.

Considering Spiderman is ps4 dlc and souls is a ps3 remaster they are not exclusive. The ps2 has a few words about best first year ever lol no contest. Hell the ps5 is not in the dreamcast weight class for first year.

PS2 wasn't released in 2001, it was released in 2000 (March in Japan). The first year exclusives line-up of PS5 will be way better than the one PS2 had.

Sony still makes unique games that microsoft don'teven mind. Games, like dream the last guardian and astrobot. Plus blockbuster Sony games are much better of the many arena shooter and shit looters Microsoft still pursue.

Honestly, at first, I was a bit miffed when they said MM and Horizon were also coming to PS4. However, seeing how good a job they did with MM's visuals on PS5, I'm not even worried anymore. Sony's studios are technical wizards and I'm sure Horizon will look just as 'next-gen' on PS5 as a next-gen exclusive game would.
Yep. We'll have to see Horizon and (if crossgen) GoW and GT7. But as of now the crossgen exclusives look great on both PS5 and PS4.

The only game I really wanted last gen was truly Dreams.
IMO games like this doesn't belong solely to a console since such a cool tool will eventually be lost while it could continue on pc.

To be honest, the last five years I've played was mainly multiplat games. I prefer Microsofts online approach and find sonys single player games boring but at the end of the day I've played way more third party games than exclusives on other platforms.

That's just me of course. I'm weird around here.

A local pond.
I am beginning to wonder if Microsoft has a budget set on these forums for constant negativity posting.

Jeez, Sony are doing just fine with a stellar release of massive hitting games coming over the next few years.

These Chicken little posts really need to end.

And you honestly believe the PS5’s launch is worse than the Xbox Ones? If so then you are a fanboy yourself.
Never did I state that my boy, now you are putting words in my damn mouth and you are starting to piss me off. Keep going I'll report you and block you. I can't stand people who put words in my mouth. I only stated that Sony has flaws, never did I state the PS5 was a failure, look at my history and you'll see that I have been trying to get a PS5 for months now. Now talk about fanboyism. The PS5 is not a failure nor is the Series X/S or Nintendo Switch. Anything else you want to add?

Sure

is the discontent that is growing in the Sony community. just open this forum, resetera or any other or twitter or just open some specialized outlet and read a lot of theirs news ... almost all with a negative tone and they are piling up a lot of doubts and perplexities. Those are the flames
Are you sure there is really a discontent in the Sony comunity? The true is that they selling Sony consoles, games and game subscriptions on gaming history record levels? And their exclusives are selling better than they ever did.

Compared to the over 120M Sony community there only a few noisy haters (many of them fanboys of the Sony competition) screaming on a few internet forums compaining for issues that mostly don't exist, that aren't issues, things that may be important for a tiny percentage of the community but almost the whole community doesn't give a fuck about, things put out of context on purpose, fake concerns, lies and a few issues or things that can be improved and they already told they are working on them.

A real discontent outside on a decent portion of the Sony community outside the typical internet toxicity and fanboy wars noise would be reflected on their numbers. Example: as of now Gamepass and MS studio purchases didn't affect sales of Sony exclusives, Sony subscriptions, Sony consoles or total game sales for Sony consoles, all of them continue to be king and growing.

Regarding the Japanese games: they are doubling down on Team Asobi, Polyphony Digital and Japanese 3rd party exclusives: big like Final Fantasy, medium like Guilty Gear Strive or small (like the case of most of half a dozen of publishers under Kadokawa). Every known first party publisher or dev has PS4 exclusives. 2nd party publishing and marketing instead of being handled locally in Sony Japan or Santa Monica now will be centralized globally from PlayStation Studios, so they will give a bigger global push for future Japanese 2nd party games as would be their next From Soft exclusive handled by the team who now does that stuff for their big 1st party studios.

They just downsized the Japan Studio team to avoid money sink games almost nobody bought (even if a few of us loved TLG or Gravity Rush) after decades with dozens of unprofitable games that didn't provide a single sales hit, and to focus the studio on their coolest team that has a bigger potential. And that now they are supposed to be 'ignoring Japan', 'losing their Japanese heritage' and other dumb shit people is saying. They simply aren't a charity, so after having more patience than any other publisher had they just shut down unsuccessful teams in Japan (as they always did in Europe or America) and support the successful ones (as they always did in Europe or America).

I'm beginning to wonder if fanboys can't handle the fact that Sony has flaws just as much as Microsoft and Nintendo. This is why companies like EA, Activision, among others don't get held accountable.

Erm I asked you a question. I didn’t say you said it. Can you tell the difference between the two? Hint there’s a ?
It’s clear as daylight that you are an Xbox fanboy, accept it embrace it.

Sony has really arsed up the PS5 launch and everything else so far this generation. I’ve bought every Playstation at launch (before you go call me an Xbox fanboy) and was set on getting a PS5 but at launch approached it just seemed Sony had no idea WTF they were doing. No good exclusives unless you could a remake of an 11 year old game and a Spider-Man expansion.

I regret selling my PS4 because honestly the only games I wanna play are my old PS4 ones. The only game I’ll want to play is Horizon Forbidden West whenever that comes out.

meanwhile, I actually bought an Xbox at launch for the first time. game pass is insane value and there’s more than 1 exclusive I actually want to play on it. plus, Microsoft has done a great job with backwards compatibility compared to Sony only supported PS4.

I’ll probably get a PS5 at some point in a couple years or so. right now i only want one to replay Bloodborne/Persona and it makes no sense to buy a PS4. hopefully Sony will make some good exclusives that interest me. also, they need to beef up PS+ or introduce a new service to compete with game pass.

Sorry, but Sony has not changed much since 2009 or something around that time.

The PS4 release was a high point because of the continuation. The problem is that there was an expectation that they would let you bring in your existing PS1 classics downloads at some point (because they carried over on PSP/PS3/Vita), there was as some expectation that they would do something nice with their PS2 emulator as well.

But all we got was a couple of ps2 rereleases with added trophies and graphics improvements, nothing at all as far as PS1 games are concerned, no apparent interest in bringing in some sort of PS3 emulation layer that would entice publishers to make quick releases on the PS5 at least.

Mind you, Sony never set that expectation, but they did have a good history of backward compatibility and multi platform purchases... Plus they have a legacy, some of the PS1/2/3 games they leave behind are pretty important to gaming as a whole.

So there was definitely some regression there, but these decisions were probably made 10 years ago.

The rest is drama.

Shut up, accept the fact that Sony has flaws who gives a flying fuck if the PS5 is successful but that does not excuse Sony for their recent actions. I bet you didn't expect that kind of response because I'm a person who says it like it is.

Who said Sony doesn't have flaws? You think saying where Sony is now is not as bad as where Microsoft was last gen means we are saying Sony is flawless?

lucious lyon wtf GIF

You might want to put your "telling it like it is" fantasy in a holding pattern, dude.

Ok what is up with people about NEWS ? So desperate that these giant corporations talk to them even when they have nothing to show.
And then muck about how fake every PR is or things revealed earlier than its release window.

Play some other games. Try some indie.
Take a walk wearing a mask.
and wait for E3/Direct.

Microsoft still launched their new consoles without any new first party exclusives, that was and is a bad look. If we are lucky we will get one new first party game this year (halo) how pathetic.

Yeah, I don't know if you heard, but there's a global pandemic shutting down development and killing people. But yes, Microsoft and Sony both still launched their new more powerful toy to replace the previous one, despite lacking new big marquee software to showcase it.
