Nintendo's Splatoon 3 Will Use AMD FSR 1.0 ; also a new server system

'Well-known dataminer OatmealDome shared on their Twitter profile a new screenshot that has been making the rounds revealing that the third entry in the shooter series will be using AMD FSR 1.0. While not as good as version 2.0, AMD FSR 1.0 will let the game run smoothly without compromising visual quality too much. As already mentioned, if Splatoon 3 will indeed use AMD FSR 1.0, it wouldn't be the first game developed by Nintendo to do so, as Nintendo Switch Sports uses AMD's upscaling tech.'

'In other news, OatmealDome also confirmed that Nintendo will be using a new in-house server system called NPLN for Splatoon 3, which will power many of the new Lobby features of the game. In-game netcode will likely still be peer-to-peer.'

This seems a bit odd to me, considering the Nvidia Shield has its own upscaling method.

The upscaling method used by the shield is only on the revision of the shield. While The Switch revision uses it, not everyone has the revised switch, so it's probably best to use AMD's FSR since both version of the hardware can support it.

Better news is the new server. None of their games should be using their old servers, which I believe are the same ones from back with the Wii and DS.

I wonder if they will use relay servers (and if yes, if it will be for all matches)

Is 'That Pure Potato'
FSR1.0...

Perhaps because implementing FSR 2.0 is more complicated, along with the minimal gains to be had to begin with. So many Switch titles are only like 540p native as is, even the hottest implementation of FSR 2.0 ain't going to make the game look much better when upscaling to 720p.

Hopefully this means next Switch will either use DLSS if they stick with NVIDIA or latest FSR if they go AMD.

Good news for the future either way.

You’ve got to understated - where Nintendo lives - 10 years in the past - this only just came out. It’s bleeding edge, bitch.
They don't live in the past, they just don't enter into the power race by Sony and Microsoft, which in essence only a very small niche core minority actually care about, hell the benchmark channel on YouTube for the technical graphical teardowns Digital Foundry only has around a million subscribers. ;)

Beat me to it, wasn't 1.0 bad?

Not really. It was better than DLSS 1.0 and better than a bicubic upscaler.
But it has some advantages. For one it's fast to implement. And it also has a very low overhead in performance.
FSR 2.0 can gain some nice performance in modern GPUs. But it's gains start to reduce the older and weaker the GPU is, because it needs to process the image upscaling algorithms.
The Switch GPU is so weak that a temporal upscaler like FSR 2.0, would make performance worse.
