Nintendo will expand its Switch Online service with Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles

Next month marks the third year of the Switch Online service and it seems there's discussion once again about Nintendo potentially bolstering its paid service with additional retro content. In the latest "Nate the Hate" podcast, known insider 'NateDrake' talks about how Nintendo might be adding Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles in the coming weeks.

It all stems from a datamine dating back to 2019 - which revealed four emulators inside Nintendo's NES app. While the purpose of the remaining emulators still hasn't been revealed, both Nate and his co-host 'MVG' believe the third one 'Hiyoko' is likely for "Game Boy and Game Boy Color" titles.

Nintendo Life has also confirmed with its own sources that Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles are likely coming to the Switch Online service "really soon".

The same insider is far less optimistic about Game Boy Advance titles arriving on the paid online service in the near future - noting how several companies are currently working on re-releases, including Nintendo, who has the Advance Wars remaster coming out this December. We've also not heard anything about Game Boy Advance titles being included in this update.

1) They'll trickle release the games.
2) They won't finish releasing all their games before the next gen.
3) They will burn this all to the ground with their next console and start again from scratch.
4) Oh, but it won't launch with their next console - we'll have to wait years before they have the new service ready.

Typical Nintendo. Probably be a slow tricle of crap Gameboy games. Meanwhile, why bother releasing the rest of the good snes, or n64. Imagine having to hire like 3 people to do this.

Remember when Nintendo first announced the Switch and they basically said that every Nintendo game to grace a console or handheld would be available to play via their online service? Oh, how I lol'd, and I'm still lol'ing to this day.

LOL still no GBA. Wouldn't want to provide any actual value when they can sell a gba remake every 6 months for $40. Stay shit nintendo.

They won't carry it over. They never do. Too bad there's no other way to play these. It's not like I have the entire library of all my favourite GBA games right on my phone or anything. OH WAIT I DO

The rom stuff on switch online is throwaway at best i barely use the service at all, i have pretty much all the old systems so playing them on switch has very little appeal. I still laugh that people get so angry at this not been a VC substitute. If you really like nintendo's older stuff find another way of playing them, the mini line of consoles i find a much better fit i have played on them a thousand times more than playing famicom & super famicom games via the switch even owning the original hardware i found the minis a perfect update.

True but youd think they would since you can now carry over your switch account to another switch console via the cloud

Gameboy.. bleh.. gba with golden sun, Castlevania, and Metroid is where it's at. I have them on Wii u but I get some stuttering as my gamepad loses connection from 5 feet away.. playing gba on tv sucks.

There's some Gameboy RPGs I wouldn't mind playing but half of them are square-enix and won't be there. I guess I'll suck it up and buy ff legends on a Switch or steam sale someday.

How do you know that the Square Enix games won't be there? Square Enix is still a partner and an ally to Nintendo and they still put their games on Nintendo platforms. So how can you say for sure that those games won't be there?

Look at what titles GB 3DS games had on the virtual console, that's what you'll get released very.. very.. slowly.

Finally, you'll get to experience the hidden gem Mole Mania.

Do you guys live in an alternative timeline where the Switch was released in 2016, or did you just fail elementary school math?

But yeah, this is pretty lame.

The Switch will be 5 years old in 6 months, and we don't even know exactly when (and if, for that matter) this is happening. Come on, this was not such an off take to say they dragged their asses for 5 years.

Especially when they should have had a full on stocked VC service day one, ready before the thing even came out.

Anyway, I'm disillusioned with them lately. I like Nintendo but you can only suck so hard for so long.
