Sony soon

They're reportedly about to announce the biggest year of any platform-holder in history, but yes, they're totally going to fire everyone and yank all decision-making into Japan over one region.

(And that's even if this was actually a valid claim in the OP, which it's not.)

"99% of game sales in 2021"....

We're in the beginning of February... and next to no notable big Japanese games have launched on Playstation consoles in January.

Feels like Hyperbole to me.
That's worse since the biggest game in Japan will be released in March 26.

Bowser's Fury - 1.5M seller
Monster Hunter Rise - 4.5M seller
Gen 4 Pokemon Remake - 3M seller
BOTW 2 - 2.5M seller
SMTV - 500K seller

It's going to get bigger for Nintendo.

If Sony made their own Switch that was a hybrid console/handheld; not just a Vita or PSP, but something you could play on your TV and take with you they'd retake Japan.
They should go one further and make it into a phone of sorts. I still believe that concept has a chance if someone finally does it right. If multiple Android gaming phones can do well enough to get a new yearly iteration then there has to be something to get there for one of the console makers.

Didn’t PS5 sell out in Japan and have limited consoles Worldwide and in Japan? Its been out for like 3 months?
Hasnt PS4 sold, Like 10 million units in Japan?
Also Japan isn’t Nintendo land, it never has been, its portable land lol.
Yes, yes and yes
I think it's less "Nintendo Land" and more "Handheld Land". They love 'em. Even the Vita was successful out there.
Yes

Pretty simple. Japan prefers handhelds. The last home console that preformed exceptionally well was the PS2. Even the Wii, which seemed to be right up Japan's alley, only did marginally better than the much more expensive PS3. 12M vs 10M.

In the end, I only expect the PS5 to do 8M-9M in Japan. That's much better than some of the doomsayers are speculating based foolishly on numbers of a sold out product with little supply, yet.

I love how both Benji and Zhunge refused to mention Nintendo's record breaking profits comparison with PS and only mentioning revenue as the penultimate thing in business.

I'm sure they give a fuck.......

Playstation is a worldwide brand. Losing Japan for them is probably like losing Zimbabwe.

Just focus on emerging markets now like India and middle east.

The data is data. The take that Nintendo did anything to Sony is not data. It's just a hot take, and it's just as silly as some of his previous hot takes.

Sony did everything on its own in Japan.
Can’t you see Nintendo is winning! And PlayStation is just for elite pro gamers and Xbox doesn’t have any games. Didn’t you know!?!?

Jesus.

What was the breakdown last year when TLOU2, GoT, Dreams, Miles and Demon Souls launched? I think Animal Crossing was the only AAA game release on the switch last year.

Regardless, wtf is Sony doing. Time for Vita 2?
No need for Vita 2 and no need to worry about Japan. Sony is an international company and tjey should focus on the global market.

Japan loves its handhelds. Sony needs to ask why they couldn't successfully tap into that market a second time. PSP sold tens of millions and is the most successful non-Nintendo handheld of all time. I don't think Sony's failure there is a matter of "changing tastes". They could reach the market if they tried, but I think they're looking Westward perpetually...

if there was ever an opportunity for Xbox to infiltrate Japan even if the data were off, this..... would be that moment.

UPDATE: the only game currently is Phantasy Star Online 2; New Genesis.

Wow! Zimbabwe is in the top three countries with the biggest gaming revenue in the world just like Japan!

I wonder why Sony don't cater to Zembabian gamers more if they have spent that much money in gaming?

Sony seems to be content to just lean on their mobile offerings in Japan. Fate/Grand Order alone has grossed them more than $4 billion USD up to this point, which is probably more than every first party Vita game has grossed combined.

This doesn’t make any sense. Japan is the 2nd biggest market and has a huge development scene. Japanese games are also pretty popular in all of Asia so those developing Asian countries are going to be earned with Japanese titles.

Either way a shame. I can’t stand Nintendo and it’s fans.

If you're saying that companies don't compete strategically, then you are wrong --

For example, Astro Playroom is a clear swipe at the Mario market. A free game, as good or better than Odyssey and a solid business move that basically says -- our games have far bigger "movie like" production value than Nintendo's but if you want that kiddy stuff then here, it's free anyway.

If market saturation like this continues, awareness and shares will drop and Sony will be forced to act.

FF7R was probably the last game the Japanese market cared about on a PlayStation system, since Sony’s main HQ is in California of course their main focus is on western titles.

PlayStation doesn't care for that part of the world anymore they only sent them like 5 consoles.

What Nintendo has done this past year has been incredibly impressive, and like others have said a lot of it is due to Sony’s own choices as well. And it’s choices that go all the way back to before the launch of the PS3 that has led to this. Nintendo focused as they always have on a system with games for everyone, with great unique ideas that people in Japan love. And most importantly the games are good and they have the complete mindset of the younger generation. Sony instead decided let’s go the super expensive super high tech route. It took forever for Japanese studios to properly adjust to. And on top of that you switched from an audience of all to an audience of primarily older individuals who don’t game as much due to life commitments, or Otaku gamers who while play and buy a lot still can’t come close to the numbers of younger games, which is also a lowering number due to the birthrate problem, that simply is too small to make playstation the brand of once was. And the brand is less recognized by the youth here for sure. Heck the commercials went from some of t he funniest and most memorable on tv in the ps1 and ps2 eras to just bland and boring the past few generations as well.

I love Sony as much as Nintendo, but they need a full rethink on how they are handling the Japanese market. Before it was just competing with Nintendo, but these days it seems more like competing for recognition. And the people in charge of the Japanese division need to think of something quickly. Some stores in the past few years that would always have playstation and Nintendo sections got rid of the playstation sections. Something unheard of here except for the Xbox. And while the demand for the ps5 is there, as long as Sony continues this course, the sales numbers are going to continue to look like complete domination from Nintendo. Even if they start making changes that work on a positive towards bringing playstation back into the concessness of the Japanese gamers and non gamers, it’s going to take a whole generation even to come close to Nintendo at this rate.

I don't even know how you end up with this opinion. Snoy and to a much lesser extent MS superfans are shitposting everywhere loudly and Nintendo fans just kinda keep to themselves and discuss their own games. Go look at Crapgamer, JaytechTV, Neogaf's own theApp99 twitter accounts and then try to find a nintendo fan who shitposts like that. They don't exist.

It's sad to see Sony not making any effort. Japan studios is shrinking while it should be expanding.

Sony will be fine as a worldwide company, but this failure carries all third party Japanese games that rely heavily on Playstation brand.
There is irreversible damage to many IPs loosing the mindshare between gamers. Final Fantasy becoming less and less relevant at each new game was already a big red flag.

Pretty easy to come to that opinion if you didn’t grow up with Nintendo and have no nostalgia for them. Thus don’t give a shit about Zelda and Mario. Yet have to constantly hear how everything is inspired by Zelda. How everything that has any cel shading is somehow inspired by Breath of the Wild. How Nintendo is the bestest ever and if you don’t care about their games you are missing out or something is wrong with you.

Take a look at the Smash community and how entitled they are. Nintendo fans are the worst.

I am not too surprised. Japan loves portables and even mobile for some peculiar reason over consoles. Nintendo has genuine exclusives that are only on the Switch. Their first party or important games to my knowledge aren’t coming to PC, are timed exclusives or are multiplatform. You want Nintendo games, you have to buy a Nintendo platform to experience them.

Japanese gamers see that Sony is more focused on and embracing the Western market and putting all their resources and money into Western-style games. Yeah, that’s where Sony makes most of their money, but it seems like Sony as a first party barely puts in any effort into Japanese games, especially with a high budget. I’m sure that’s contributing to Nintendo’s dominance as well. Not to mention the PS5 shortage.

Slightly off topic but do the kids nowadays actually care for Mario/Zelda? Because from what I’ve seen, the games kids talk about are Minecraft, Fortnite, and Roblox.

I think Mario/Zelda is still big... for the adult crowd.

Kids play kids games

Teenagers like edgy games they think are for adults (TLOU, don't @ me)

Adults like games they think are for children.

How I think it works.

So, if PlayStation has been "eradicated", what the heck do we describe Xbox as? Because... well, you know...

How I think it works.

Kids and teenagers try hard to be edgy & grown up so they play mature games, go online in most adult games and it's squeaker city out there they want desperately to be seen as adults. (most) actual adults who have gone past puberty stop giving a shit and play whatever's fun despite how bright & colourful it might be. The biggest give away to how mature someone actually is, are the people who go on about how they have grown up so they no longer play nintendo games as those are for babies they now play "big boy" consoles like proper mature gamers totally failing to see the irony of how immature they actually still are.

I get you aren't a fan of them, but have you even noticed what goes on in any Nintendo related threads here? You'll find the same obsessed console warriors every single time taking the fun and joy out of it. Even when the threads have absolutely no mention of Playstation or Xbox they still find ways to stir shit up.

This place is an absolute nightmare for Nintendo fans most of the time.

This is so true... I mean, Nintendo would be really successful anyway, but PS wouldn't be so behind at least if they had something to appeal japanese market.

And contrary to what some here state, no, japanese market is not falling into irrelevance... Markets evolve with people preferences and needs, if businesses don't follow, the loose is on them not the market.
Yeah absolutely.

I think it's hilarious that some people want to blame the market itself. The Switch shows that there is a market for videogames, if your system isn't catering to japanese audiences, that's on you. The customer ain't to blame, that's ridiculous.

Right. They "refuse". Of course. It can't be that you're looking at the wrong data, both of these people, one of whom's job literally depends on them having accurate numbers, are simply hiding this and lying that PlayStation is the first platform-holder to have two years of $20+ Billion revenue.

Obvs.

Excellent news for Nintendo. Even the Japanese developers who have not made the transition to Nintendo Switch for their platforms are losing money at a steady pace for not putting their titles on Nintendo Switch. At some point, they will be forced to make games for Switch if they wish to succeed in the domestic market. Everything is going according to plan.

This is really dumb. Developers like Mihoyo and Ubisoft had openly admitted they were inspired by BOTW for their games.

Knew Sony has been too into western cock lately.

The more western they are, the less interested I am in them.

Save TLOU and GOT, I'm not really into Sony's games.

Fuck is Wipeout? Jumping Flash? I miss the Sony that made the PS1.

There's no way they're porting it to Switch. They'll just hope it's a hit overseas. Same with FF7 remake.
The latest Trails games might get ported by some other company like Cold Steel 3-4 were, but Falcom is happy to stay Sony exclusive. I don't know if they've ever directly released on Nintendo before.
I don't think the mainline Persona games will ever hit Switch either, just the spinoffs.

I cannot say what they will or will not do. I'm just saying it is a hard decision for any publisher turning away their largest audience in exchange of the uncertainty of the western sales.
Just business decisions, with short term (sales) and long term consequences (audience growth).
