On October 16, 2014, Nintendo Co., Ltd. filed in Japan via the JPO/INPUT a patent application titled "Training Implement, Training System, and Input Device". It saw an international filing on September 18, 2015, and publication yesterday, on April 22, 2016, via WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization). For whatever reason, it appears to not be accessible via J-PlatPat, at least the documents can't be clicked. But the entry on WIPO is quite extensive so it'll do just as well.

This invention concerns some form of exercise controller/system incorporating sensors for load, acceleration, gyro and temperature, amongst other things, to be used for gaming/exercise. The inventors are:

  • KURODA, Ryoji - Has more than ten patents with Nintendo, most related to Wii Remote
  • YAMAMOTO, Shinji - Has more than five patents with Nintendo, most related to controllers. He's also done work for Panasonic.
  • YAMADA, Yoshito - Unsure about connection to Nintendo, but he appears to have various patents in differing fields (tech mainly)
Only a small portion of the international publication is available in English, so I had to once again rely on machine translation. The J-PlatPat translation service, as used for the projector patent thread I couldn't use due to this application not being readily available for view there, but WIPO provides qualitative translation too, so I decided to go with that. Interesting parts are underlined. Let's start with the abstract:

A training implement (10) comprises a hollow body (12) formed from an aluminum alloy. The body is configured from two grips (12a) provided facing each other across a space, and a connecting section (12b) connecting the two grips. A load sensor (16) is disposed in the connecting section inside the body. The load sensor is a load cell, the strain gauge is bonded on the inside of the body, and the portion of the body to which the strain gauge is bonded functions as a strain element. Consequently, when a user applies force so as to bring the two grips towards each other or applies force so as to separate the two grips, the load thereof is detected by the load sensor.

Technical Field

Now, there is much more texts to this, the claims I haven't really got room for. Furthermore this patent describes portable and stationary units/terminals and a whole slew of other things. It also goes in great detail on many things.

I know the language here isn't the best, but it would take me a long time to provide a better translation. It'd take someone fluent in Japanese a long time to provide a better translation. Hopefully with a group effort we can come to a better understanding of this. Though I think it's quite clear what this is.

Nintendo fixing their mistakes with the Wii U by making a controller that fits the name properly
Could be a cool steering wheel peripheral, but I'm not sure we'll ever see it.

When I wrote this I thought about QOL and how this may have something to do with that. The state of the sleep monitor I don't know, but this seems more lucrative and Nintendo said more than one device/concept would be under the QOL initiative.

There is a system described with processor, RAM, HDD and the likes. Looks a bit like the Wii U, but could be entirely new.

And the NX will be a device that supports all of these devices. Dont yall see it?

It will be a QOL, Handheld, Console, VR, AR machine. What yall think the supplemental powering device was for? Not for a console but to support all of these things combined. They struck lightning again yall! An all in one machine that is capable of doing everything aka the Nintendo HOME

This actually seems very reasonable, as long as the cup doesn't begin overflowing with peripherals.

Looks really interesting! Not for gaming, really, but definitely cool for an interactive strength training device. I'll look into the patent documents

Edit: Good find, Rösti!

Is this the qol concept they were mentioning before? Will it be separated from or integrated into the NX? Nevertheless it looks really interesting. I love innovative Nintendo.
