Next Gran Turismo Will be a ‘Combination of Past, Present, and Future’

We recently got the opportunity to sit down with Gran Turismo series creator Kazunori Yamauchi. The round-table chat took place during a break in the schedule at the Nurburgring World Tour event, and you can read the first part of the discussion here.

With all the industry talk right now centered on the next generation of consoles, it’s little surprise that there’s a lot of focus on the next generation of Gran Turismo. GT Sport may only be 21 months old, but it too will have to face the future in the coming months.

What does that future look like? GT Sport was a controversial departure from the series norm and many outlets, including GTPlanet, marked it down for the relative lack of single-player content. It’s a situation Polyphony Digital has sought hard to remedy, so does this mean the next Gran Turismo will go back to its roots — or will it be a GT Sport 2?

“I think in terms of races themselves and physics GT Sport has really reached the best place that we’ve ever reached – we’re at a very good place,” says Yamauchi. “On the other hand, obviously we’re working on the next Gran Turismo already, and the world of sport we’ve achieved through GT Sport is something I’ve always imagined to be the future of Gran Turismo. We were able to establish that now.”

If the team was able to realize the future of Gran Turismo already, does that mean that there’s room for more focus on the strengths of older Gran Turismo games?

“I don’t normally play the past editions of Gran Turismo,” answers Yamauchi. “But since I started doing the world tours, the players, they’re all young guys but they all bring GT2 or GT3 with them – like, how old were you when this game came out!? So I’ve had more opportunity to play them recently, and it’s surprising how much I’ve forgotten!”

Yamauchi muses that perhaps his ongoing curiosity and pursuit of the future means that sometimes he can forget the past, but clearly the players and fans don’t.

“Having done all these World Tours, it gave me the opportunity to feel the history of Gran Turismo,” he adds. “It gives me pointers and hints of the things we should make sure that we do in the future of the series.”

What does this mean for the next title — whether it’s GT7 or GTS2? “I think the next title that we’re going to create will be a combination of the past, present and future – a complete form of Gran Turismo,” he answers.

Of course it’s likely that the next title will be on the next PlayStation console. One of our colleagues in the room wonders what Polyphony Digital will do with the extra power that console would bring.

“The first thing that’s going to be affected by more power is VR,” says Yamauchi. “I don’t think that there’s anything else that requires that much processing power. I really like VR; I’m one to believe in the possibilities of it, and it’s very suited for a driving game.”

“VR is something that really depends on the evolution of GPU power, and the hardware for it, like display devices even. It’s something where you can never have enough computing power; there’s always going to be that hardware limit, and that limit is never going to be high enough for us! Obviously that’s going to gradually improve over time and we’ll make sure to follow that.”

We’ll bring you more from our round table discussion soon.

Seriously I hope they reset this properly as this is one franchise which has really gone into obscurity and has been overshadowed by other driving games
With GT Sport, Yamaouchi proved to me, that he is unable to to so. They need to rethink Gran Turismo if they want the franchise to stay relevant at this point. Build on the strong points (Car RPG), but basically reboot everything else.

I miss the days where I grinded for credits in costa di amalfi in GT4.

I kindda thought they'll eventually release GT Sports Season 2 or something like that, upgrade the game for PS5 and continue updating it for years to come. No need to leave any existing asset on the table.

As someone who doesn't liked the focus on e-Sports stuff and who also doesn't care about VR the future doesn't sound very promising.

After following the series since its inception ever since the demo of the first game came out (but i skipped GTSport) i think the race for me is probably coming to an end.

The most successful and highest selling sim racer this gen is on course for another stellar installment in the series come PS5, personally I cannot wait...….I just wish Kaz would have GT7 at PS5's launch, that game would sell 40 million copies if it was a launch game over time.....

Oh and Kaz, great that you're looking back at old GT's, so bring some of our favourite tracks back and of course, bring back B-Spec.....

GT5 tried that before.
Let's see how it will work this time.

GT8 or GTS2 it doen't matter if it has what made the franchise the best in the world again... Sport Mode.

Gran Turismo back in it's true form is something I've wanted for a long time. While having the serial numbers stamped in the millimeter precise correct location on a panel under the dashboard is commendable, I was always more a fan of digging through the game itself. By GT5 they had lost some of what got me into the series to start with. I really want to jump into GT7 with both feet. I've been playing GT6 for so long and it's really showing it's age at this point.

I want the quirky fun nature of early GT back, I want more of the interesting fantasy tracks back, some degree of car damage simulation, and I even want the weird, puzzle-like menus with the funky jazz playing over it. I'd also like a PC release but I won't hold my breath on that one.

The past is also going to be the future as GT7 probably won't be out for another 5 years.

I'd actually expect GT7 pretty early in the PS5's life. Not having a full on, numbered entry this generation probably means 7 has been in development along side Sport for a long time. Though I don't expect it, I wouldn't be shocked if it was a PS5 launch title. I'd guess second holiday season is more likely though.

I'd really like that

PD has the lead in racing and it's slight, I want to remind everyone GT Sport was a bounce-back title for PD, GT5 and 6 was staying in update hell, what has PD learned from GT5 and 6? I looked at GT Sport as a 4/4 title, significantly better than the previous installments and that generally means it's heading into the right direction.

PS5 launch title? Dreaming. We'll continue to see Sport pushed as a cross gen good enough and I don't see a launch of a new GT until 2022/23 honestly.

I honestly expect GT Sport to cross onto the PS5 and remain updated for a while on it before a full GT7 is released. Now that they've started up microtransactions in the game there is enough money on the table they won't abandon it.

As long as GT7 happens, whenever it happens, I'll be there. I still remember the countless hours I spent with the first GT sitting in front of a 13" TV. I don't expect to ever recapture that magic, but the series will always hold a place in my heart.

I wish there was a game that would let you play with shitty everyday cars. From the 90s-2000s.

This is all I want from GT. Along with going into school the next day to compare gold licences and passes. Truly the golden years.

Forza Horizon is closest you'll get.

As soon as they go back to making the traditional style GT games then I’ll gladly return to the series. It’s good to hear him referring to GT2 as that was one of my favorites.

They are too slow. It takes them years just to make one game. Why bother when I can play the number of racing games that release in between each GT installment? Those other racing games are usually just as good or even better than what PD puts out.

Polyphony only need to combine GT6 and GTS's online to win with GT7.

If you have a wheel set up with vr it will be something special.

Dirt Rally on PSVR is already really good with a wheel, and its the entire game in VR. Incredibly exhilarating. Can't imagine it on PS5.

I miss GT very badly. SPORT wasn’t for me. I don’t give a damn about super cars in the game, in fact I outright avoid them. GT for me was about getting to drive a car I owned, a normal real car you can go buy, see it in a video game and get to tune it up and see it change. I adored that so much. I was driving a Silvia (240SX) at the time GT2 came out and man did I love getting to compare how my car sounded to the game, compare stupid things like the turn radius, and just enjoy racing it.

I want that back. I want them to look at the market and move more normal cars back into the lineup. I want to be able to go out and buy a stock base level 2019 Supra and see it in the game.

Loved GT Sport, it really hit that perfect simcade target (and I say that as a fan of various PC sims). If they're going to lean into the esports side again though, I think they need to go licence a few more real world tracks.

Gran Turismo is like fine wine.

Forza is like fine milk.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around what the Forza team keeps doing wrong. Forza 7 on paper should have been a GT Killer. It had the cars, it had the tracks, no real GT was in the market to compete, and yet it still feels like a toy compared to GT. I don’t get it. What are they doing wrong that’s making these games feel “off” compared to GT.
