Next Call of Duty Won't Have Jetpacks, Treyarch Developer Tweets He Still Has 'PTSD' From Fan Reaction

"You hung me from the highest branch.

Treyarch Studio Design Director David “Vahn” Vonderhaar wants you to know that he really hates jetpacks, and judging from some recent comments of his, it’s unlikely that we’ll see their return in Call of Duty’s 2020 game.

First reported by CharlieIntel, Vonderhaar took to Twitter to respond to a fan tweeting “you butter [sic] have jetpacks in the next COD.”

“NO,” Vonderhaar replied succinctly.

Responding to another fan who said that jetpacks would “revive” Call of Duty, Vonderhaar elaborated on why he’s so against their return.

“Such short-term memories,” Vonderhaar tweeted. “You hung me from the highest branch. No. NO. I have PTSD.”

So there you have it. Treyarch has yet to announce any concrete information about their next Call of Duty game, but it looks like jetpacks aren’t high on the wish list for at least one director at the studio. Jetpacks were last seen in Treyarch’s Black Ops 3, and their inclusion in the franchise’s multiplayer proved to be a divisive one. Critics derided the use of jetpack-like exosuits as a continued move away from Call of Duty’s core competitive shooting, while fans praised the way it fundamentally altered movement strategies and provided new players a tool to escape or return fire.

That's too bad. It got a little monotonous when everything was future warfare, but then, the same goes for every game being WWII, or plain ol' modern warfare.

I'd love to see one of the three studios slaved to CoD try for something more free and less "boots on the ground" every now and then. I'll never understand why dolphin diving in a WWII warzone is fine, but jetpacks and wallrunning in a near-future or futuristic setting breaks some folks' immersion.

On the other hand, his reaction is totally justified. A very small, very vocal splinter of the community act like total psychopaths online. When that's the reaction you get for trying something different, why not play it safe?

I think whats going stale in CoDs is not the setting of the game i.e. futuristic or modern or old, but the gameplay loop itself. I think they should change the formula by introducing a refreshed gameplay loop and fleshed out PvE.

Advanced Warfare is the only one I liked.

But then again, I play FPSes on PC.
I bet fast paced vertical movements are a pain in the ass for console players with gamepads, so it make sense they didn't like it and CoD got back into being a series I don't give a shit about.

I have a revolutionary idea - how about we hold off on a Call of Duty this year altogether? Modern Warfare is a damn good game and releasing another game this year would just fragment the playerbase. I guarantee if they stuck with one game for a little longer than a year they’d make more money. Just look at Siege. Ubisoft doesn’t have a sequel in the works, they build upon and improve it. They have a really healthy playerbase - consistently > 100k on PC.

I wholeheartedly agree with this.

At this point its just best to consider cod as the same genre as sports games. You dont seen ea or 2k building on top of their football games.

Can’t be worse than the low effort garbage that was Modern Warfare. Hidden SBMM, no ranked play, awful maps(and no maps,) so many puzzling design choices, Ground War is horrible, the list goes on.

I gave them the benefit of the doubt for the first two months but I haven’t touched it since. Disappointing.

I love boost jumping but I'm OK with it not coming back if it means we get good maps and fewer spammy low-skill deaths. But who am I kidding, we'll get shit maps with no flow and even more "balancing" features.

Or how about Call of Duty is ALWAY botg? COD doesn't need to be the only shooter you play. If you want jetpacks, play a game that has them.

That's the least of my worries.
How trash will the maps, weapons and perks be?
Blops 4 is the WORST blops in history.
Every black ops game became worse than the last with blops3 taking a HUGE jump in quality loss with 4 somehow finds ways to ruin gameplay ever further.

Maps in MW2019 like shoot house and classics like Vacant atomize blops4.

If black ops continues this trend then I'm done. I just can't.

Seriously loved black ops 1.
The maps, perks, and kill streaks were infinitely better.

I wish these idiots would stop devaluing the very real PTSD our vets suffer through. You don't get PTSD from mean comments you limp dick fucktards. You get PTSD from getting raped, or seeing your buddy's face shot off.

People are dicks, that's a fact. However, if you can't handle the heat, go work on corporate software where your name will never be displayed anywhere and nobody cares about your Twitter.

PTSD is a serious issue and if your career is causing it, switching to something else should be considered.

BO3 is the best CoD this gen for sure, but Vahn having this kind of reaction is typical, he's a pretty sensitive guy. How did he get PTSD if the reception to the game in its heyday was actually good?

Let's clarify the feeling is yes future Call of Duty games are made that no on really loves, so lets put that to rest, WW2, Modern Warfare and Black Out were really good so now its up to Treyarch playing it kinda safe, and there's nothing wrong with that.

He should have nightmares because Black Ops 4 was a slow ass piece of shit. BLOPS3 was epic in its innovation with the new specialists, winners circle, loot boxes (though I never paid a fucking cent for DLC). Even the characters shit talking during matches was fun. I loved the "jetpacks" in Infinate Walfare as well. I entered the Matrix with that shit, best control of any FPS ever made. BLOPS4 deteriorated into clown suit wearing bullshit and was not fun for me. WWII reminded me of a PS2 game on a PS4, shit music, gameplay, everything sucked. I got it on black Friday and played it for like a month. Glad to see Sledgehammer is not developing another COD. And yes, I hated Asvanced Warfare too.

I don't think Treyarch can improve on the current Modern Warfare without a huge breakthrough. Lemme run on ceilings or something.
