the art all
I'm so glad this getting simple remaster instead of try to "remake" the visuals. The art direction for Nocturne is masterful and aged so well, there no need to change it, All I needed was resolution upgrade and thats its.
very true. The art style holds up well. Nice crisp image is all that's really needed

If there's one thing I love about remastered old games is how when you see the comparison of the remaster and the original, you begin to realize that all that time you spent playing the original as a much younger person; you played the game while visualizing the graphics to be just as good as the current remaster version.

Gaming back then was still a matter of using your imagination on top of the visual representation you have on screen, and the best remasters are when the developer tries make your imaginative representation of the game become true.

I love this method "how you remember it looking" is so much better than the messes of Shadow of the Colossus and soon to be Demons Souls

Nice. The characters and demons look as good as the original. I wonder how much handholding there will be with the new merciful difficulty setting.

I wonder if digital devil saga could come to switch/ps4 if this does okay
I have both Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2. I would love to see a HD remake or remaster for both games.

Looks wonderful, reminds me of the HD emulation shots I saw on Twitter a few years ago that got me into this game.

I ended up a tad disappointed because the colors were a bit more washed out and the game wasn't as crisp-looking on the actual hardware, but it was still a gorgeous-looking title nonetheless.

But THIS stuff right here looks even better than those shots ! This is shaping up to be a fantastic remaster.

Will I be able to finish it or will I drop it midway?? Like some persona games despite being addictive and awesome.

Can someone answer if you know what I mean?

Damn. Atlus needs to work on this. It always bothers me when I leave a game midway, if I was enjoying it.
Well SMT/Persona are dungeon crawlers, so they are by nature long games, its not a design flaw that Atlus needs to work on.

My advice is get it for Switch, it easier to play long games like SMT on portable.

I have persona 3, 4G on my Vita, smt 4 on 3ds. Time or ease of access is not an issue.

Its just that I have put 80hrs in game and still I get bullied by a brick wall boss. I just don't have it anymore to finish it. I know how many floors are remaining and how many times I will face such bosses.

I think characters are very well done in games and would like to see how it ends. I guess I will resort to youtube.

I think atlus can take these bosses seriously and design them carefully instead of just strewing across the game on whim. Maybe throw in a weakness and not make it easy for me to find out? They do have tons of abilities so wouldn't be hard. I don't want to go grinding when I meet a boss and find out I don't have ability needed or level.

In my experience I never once needed to grind in any SMT/Persona games, what I did is do lot of demon fusion because I love fusing demons, it one of the mechanic that made me addicted to SMT/Persona gameplay loop.

Can't remember but did smt 3 have the "persona bank"? Last thing I remember getting a certain demon was pain.

I would say its much harder to get skill you want for your Demon because unlike newer game like SMTIV, you couldn't choose which Skill your demon would get, so you need keep exiting and entering Cathedral hoping it Demon would get skill.

I see. If you are addicted to demon fusing, I don't think you will have any problem with level or abilities.

I personally like to balance it with story progression. Do it as much as I find enjoyable in dungeon. But not overly so.

I think Atlus intends to appeal to a niche that is dungeon crawler, but it can be so much more.

If you are expecting Nocturne to be character story heavy like Persona games then you be disappointed. SMT is are is much more about the combat and dungeon crawling.

I'm sorry, I like Persona series but SMT are not that and I don't want them to be like Persona games. They heavy dungeon crawlers and thats one of their big core appeal of mainline SMT series.

I think the PS2 pictures are taken from a modern TV/monitor not from a CRT TV :pie_thinking:
I'm tempted to fire up my PS2 to check it myself because I'm sure they did not look as bad as shown here.
I'll get this remaster for sure if it sticks to the source material (no retcon of any sort or modifying the game to please current day crowd)

Yeah, these screens are always slightly misleading, the image quality was much higher on a CRT than it is when displayed on modern displays.

Exactly, I know they are doing this for the sake of marketing but still it bothered me and I had to comment on it :messenger_hushed:

I personally find story and atmosphere of smt games more appealing than persona games.

Gameplay wise I find them to be similar if not identical. Struggle to finish either of them despite being addictive.

I think they can very much improve experience without taking away what makes them great.

Clinging to past or shortcomings won't help this series progress.

But anyways since you like them as is then good for you. I would still be getting this and smt 5 when it lands on switch.

I can't wait to get this and then immediately hate it!

Combat + dungeon crawling is the worst stuff ever, but damn does this series have a sterling reputation.

So, Japan got also SMT 1 and 2 via Nintendo Online. That would mean that every numbered SMT title is on Switch except for the SMT IV duology. Maybe Atlus will port them over as well?

Nocturne is one of the most fun dungeon crawlers because its extremely fast. Entering combat is snappy with maybe 3 seconds of loading. Moves have short animations. Accessing your map & menu has no loading. There's not many NPCs you have to talk to (or CAN talk to) due to the apocalyptic setting.

Even X-Play gave it a 5 out of 5 and they hated japanese RPGs lol

This timeless art style is just a bonus.

How's the story? SMT series outside of Persona don't seem to get much praise for plot. I don't want to spend 40 plus hours for the gameplay alone.

The story is great it just it’s not character story heavy as Persona games, but it still has fantastic story.
