Just passing this along as I've been interested in this game and was going to wait on buying till more reviews, much to my happy surprise there it is free to try on MS Gamepass on PC. Anybody not taking advantage of all the great new and old games on MS Gamepass are missing out, for a third of the price of the actual new game you can play it all the same on gamepass!!!

How is the AI in this game?

Personally, this is most important thing. I stopped playing Civ 6 just because AI is really dumb and can't wage a war. No much improvement from CIV 4 which is a 15 years old game

I played the open beta twice and it was pretty fun. The combat is much improved over Civ simply because it doesn't turn into a carpet of doom and there's some neat tactical concepts like reinforcements and entrenchment.

The AI in these kind of games is always going to be iffy though. Same deal like Civ, it gets mad bonuses on higher difficulties but can hardly keep up with you on normal.

Wish the game was a little deeper but that sort of thing is improved by DLC, which is what I think I'll wait for before buying.

I played the beta. Got curbstomped. I was impressed. But that was like 4 hours with the game so maybe it was just me being a n00b. But basically if you don't build any army and just do the normal Civ thing of expanding peacefully the AI will come around and ravage your hippy ass.

I do have it on PC, sweaty. But I appreciate your effort to defend Microsoft's honor. I was making more a commentary on threads with no substance on the games themselves rather the delivery platform.
To be fair, this thread isn't really about the game as much as it is about the game's presence on Gamepass. Why that required a new thread I'm not really sure, but here we are.

Any particular impressions about the game, major differences to Civ? Does it have controller support on PC?

I'm just being lazy here really.

I saw something about this maybe months ago, as a long time civ fan I was very interested and filed it away in my mind to checkout when it arrived.

Now its out and on game pass???? wowee, mind blown, clicks install.

80% open/metacritic indicates its probably a decent game worth putting some hours into.

How does this compare to CIV?

What words makes the crazies on here shake in uncontrollable anger?

I think both of the following are true:

1. A minority of people on this board discuss Gamepass so frequently and with such fawning praise that they should be getting paid to do it (assuming they aren't; I wouldn't be surprised either way).

2. Another minority (but larger than the first) have a strong negative emotional response to anything involving Gamepass, a few to the point of legitimate psychiatric concern.

Great game. I was expecting a crap Civ rip off, but I've been enjoying it a lot. Nice that it's on GP, too. It's been working fine on two PC's here.

Game seems to have a slow start (not necessary a bad thing) but have been having fun so far. Have only fought animals but I do like the extra layer of strategy in combat compared to Civ.

Looking forward to playing more.

Seems to be usual launch day issues. Majority of negative reviews are about crashing ro failure to launch.
If someone plays it via gamepass on pc download it straight from the MS store as it kept crashing on my via the Xbox app on PC

Downloaded and played from gamepass and it runs great for me. Bummer a few are having issues, I'm sure they will be fixed.

I hear one of the most baffling design choices in this game is how you're forced to play as another civilization with each passing era.

Has anyone played the game and experienced this? Is it a jarring decision?

In writing, it sounds like a grating design choice as the entire point of these games is seeing your civilization grow through the eras.

I have only been able to select the first civilization so far. My understanding is that when you pick the second civilization it combines with the first so it evolves.

Hmmm. Understood. Well, do update us if you get far enough and experience it. I'm really on the fence on the game so far, so impressions would be welcome!

I have chosen my first civilization and actually am quite interested to see how it plays out. I went with the Chinese civilization firstly.

Do that with any PC games from Game Pass, the Xbox App is awful at times

Anyway, I wanna try this, I've only just started to get into 4X games and have this and Endless Space 2 to play, I've played CK3 and Stellaris a bit

Endless Space 2 is really a great game once you get a grasp of it.

The reviews I've watched make it look like a really polished version of Stellaris, plus it was £4, can't complain on that price tbh

Well, Endless Space 2 is a turn based strategy whereas Stellaris is basically realtime (but i haven't played Stellaris) and for 4 bucks you've made a great deal. Anyways happy gaming.

After playing with it, it’s actually quite a good idea. Just imagine that in Civ you start the game with your normal settler and only after a few turns you choose your civilization.

Then the other cultures you add act more as the dedications from Rise and Fall in that they give you additional bonuses impacting your playstyle.

But don’t be fooled: this is a lot more a version of Endless Legend without the fantasy aspects than a Civ clone imo. Most mechanics from the combat to the storylines are taken straight from Endless Legend.

My main issue is how replayable it will be since you don’t have the same variety of Civ styles to choose from and the game seems more streamlined but that’s very early to tell. Also the OST is fantastic (same FlyByNo guy).

Trying to play this game via parsec onto my surface laptop isn't working well for me. Its just a pain despite having a 3080.

I need to fix this out before AoE.

Nothing to do with the game.

I don't think the culture diversity issue is a thing; the expansionist cultures for example can have wildly different approaches: in the Classical era you can choose between Romans and Persians and the former is more military expansionist while the later is more administrative.

I personally found the differences between Civ factions kind of bland (at least for the later DLC nations). That's not to say it's wildly imaginative here but it's at least not worse.

. . . my main issue with the game is that the wackiness of the LUCY trailer doesn't really come through in advancing your civilizations. The culture change is more of a playthrough refresh allowing you to pivot in the course of a game.

Played some more turns last night. Seems to be a slow start of a game and I hope it gets more interesting because so far it just doesn't differentiate itself from Civ enough.
The recently released Old World combines Civ with Crusader Kings 3 and plays by completely different rules making it feel much more "fresh" than Humankind.

I have GPU but decided to just buy it on Steam for £22, I might make a thread about it being on Steam too :messenger_grinning_smiling:

Good game so far, have only played a couple of hours so it will be interesting to see how the decisions I made impact my civ down the line.

Been playing Old World since pre-release. It's got a really unique feel with the CK style families mashed in which I'm loving.

Humankind really needs a lot more polish and a DLC or 2 to give it more personality. But the foundation is promising.
