new 4K monitors @ CES: Will it become the next PC standard?

Why not 4K OLED?
The hype for 4k is pretty unwarranted. Nobody will be able to afford the hardware required to use it
That will change as soon as IGZO (or comparable) backplane yields improve. Should be within a year or two.

It will probably be 3-4 years into next-gen before we see cards capable of pushing native 4k games at playable framerates. And it will probably be a few years longer than that before we see native 4k games anyway, and only for PC.

Maybe a few simple scale games at 4k native on PS4.

The hype for 4k is pretty unwarranted. Nobody will be able to afford the hardware required to use it, and for televisions almost nothing will be broadcast in 4k for years to come.

OLED is what you should be focusing on.

4k is the new 3D.

As soon as they get close to 1000 bucks or so I will jump all over one (And then buy $2000 worth of video cards to push it)

I don't see them hitting the 200 dollar range anytime soon, but if you are willing to pay as much for one as you would a 50" TV they will be available.

Higher refresh rates, better response times and lower input latency are more important than resolution.

I purposely chose higher resolution over 120hz just this year. I regret nothing.

A GTX680 card can push 4k in modern games with ease.

People routinely push PC games at above 4k resolutions (downsampling) and still maintain playable framerates.

The future is now.

Take your pick: Crysis at high/DX11 or very high/DX9 both offer a stunning, smooth 4K experience on our Core i7/GTX 680 gaming PC

You are not people. 9screenshotspersecond is not playable.
4k will be standard in about 7-8 years.

Yeah, pretty much every game out there runs at least at console framerates on a 680 at 4k. Of course, you can't do much AA on top of that.

classic pixar movies where rendered at 2k right?

Personally i find resolution to be somewhat overrated. Slight blurryness never hurt anyone. aslong as you can get rid of the jaggies, shimmer etc.

It'll probably become the next standard, but it'll take time.

There is plenty of room for more pixel density on monitors and TV. People saying the opposite never saw a 4K screen, or have eyesight issue.

Now more than 4K for most monitors (<27") i'm not sure this will ever be justifiable.

Higher refresh rates, better response times and lower input latency are more important than resolution.

It's not necessarily incompatible with more pixels.
Plus 60hz is perfectly fine for 2D, and latency is very well contained nowadays. Truly you cannot compare such changes with something that's immediately apparent to anyone.
