Mortal Kombat 11 female characters were purposely made less sexual according to NetherRealms.

I don't mind the changes but the reasons are fucking ridiculous. No slightly scantily clad women (even though lots of the males are) because 'this game is about the realism of going in to battle'. The twat should have just not said anything.
The logic in itself is sexist (even though it's real): Kano can stand naked because a naked Kano has way more physical protection than a covered up woman.

It ain't armor most of them are wearing, so there perhaps it doesn't need to be "protecting" at all?

I understand the armor argument when warriors wear metal plates.

But this is a complaint thread about a specific issue, not a combat praise thread. Not sure what you are arguing??
Just that cosmetic changes aside, the game is still the same (more or less... Seems more fun mechanics were put in... Story mode is more jovial).

Is a digital woman in skimpy clothes REALLY that much of a big deal? And so what if the guys are shirtless... That's less sexualization than a woman in skimpy attire.

I'm just not getting the outrage. It just isn't that serious to me... Some even saying they aren't buying the game because of the clothes thing! I don't get it.

Some of them new outfits look alright to me , however as a European i dont understand when everyone is ok with a game i can pull your spine out or throw my sharp hat to cut of your head is ok but cleavage is pushing it to far. I really dont get you Yanks sometimes.
It's to please a crybaby vocal minority that won't play the game anyways.

Can you give a few examples of games you were fully intending to buy but decided not to based on this criteria?
Dead or Alive, Gravity Rush, but does it matter?

If your wife thinks you're a "creepy pervert" because you're playing a game, you have bigger problems than gaming.
Not really. I'm not saying she would, but for my own dignity I tend to shy away from half naked digital woman. But if it's your thing, go for it.

I also feel scantly clad woman in video games are out of place. Why would a woman wear next to nothing in a fight for her life? It's unrealistic, and unnecessary. But these are just my opinions.

And if a sex scene comes up in a movie you both watch, you leave the room or just cover your eyes?

Can't believe people marriages look like that, living adult life like a teen boy hiding porn stash from mom.
Movies are clearly different. She doesn't play too many video games, but again it's not like she would care. I personally have no need to get my rocks off while gaming.

Our design is just getting more mature and respectful.
Well, thank goodness Netherrealm have their priorities straight. If there's one thing I come to Mortal Kombat for it's the palpable sense of maturity and respect that's conveyed as the fighters brutalize and humiliate one another in excessively gory fashion.

Surely this has to be in the running for a Most Transparent Pandering award?

Quite possibly one of the most tired spins on the word 'gamer' to ever exist.

But you know. Neogaffers.

I've already defended this game multiple times and I still stand by that statement that it's their game and they should design characters as they wish. Hell, I like the new Scarlet more than the old one.
But his statement that he wants the game to be " more mature and respectful " is complete horseshit.

Why wouldn't every male fighter be in armor if you want realism? The trope that Vikings were going in battle naked is not realistic yet I don't see anyone complain about that.

Getting some mixed messages here. There's people in this thread saying "LOL JUST OWN UP TO WANTING NEKID WOMEN IN GAMES YOU SAD VIRGIN FUCKS" and then there's people like you going "LOL YOU REALLY WANT NEKID WOMEN THAT MUCH YOU SAD VIRGIN FUCKS?" There's no winning. Someone will be complaining regardless of what's being said.

I don't give a fuck about this game. But people have expectations for these games and its design, and sexy gals is part of it. This game has a history of what, 25 years at this point? It's not that hard to understand people are looking for more of the same.

I'm just not getting the outrage. It just isn't that serious to me... Some even saying they aren't buying the game because of the clothes thing! I don't get it.
A regressive, abhorrent ideology is gaining ground, and some feel they need to fight back the only way they can: through financial means. I can't blame 'em. It's obvious to anyone why this choice was made and it's a retarded reason. And honestly, isn't it up to people what factors they consider when buying a game? My favourite thing in games could be boats, and I wouldn't buy a game if it doesn't have boats. That's a totally legit reason not to buy a game for that hypothetical me.

See, that's the thing. I don't have a problem with classic Mortal Kombat. I don't have a problem with this approach either. I trust the devs to do what's best for the series. That's why I am questioning ideologies that pretend to care about artistic choice when they only care about confirmation bias. If really wanting to see scantily clad women is your stance, then that's cool. Just be honest about it. But all this beating around the bush and pretending it's not just wanting scantily clad fighters is embarrassing. Own up to your desires, yo.
I'm actually gay so it's not really what I want. Personally I'm not into videogame characters anyway so I have no dog in this fight I just find it very one-sided and this isn't just about gaming it's society in general. I think the perception is when a good looking woman is naked they are seen as 'weak' and vulnerable whereas a good looking man is seen as strong. I'm no expert on Mortal Kombat though but I don't think it ever goes for the Dead Or Alive women as in most of the women in the game are strong and have big muscles.

Men are just as easily to make into a sex object if you will but my thing is the fact that people are seeing that in a videogame without the context says more about that person.

If you're bothered by that, just vote with your wallets and don't buy it.
This line is such lazy bullshit. The pressure and money is coming from the SIDE YOU DON'T WANT WINNING so even if a bunch of people don't buy the game that's not going to change the kudos money NR will still get. Not to mention they would have to deal with all the organizations and advocacy groups if they didn't give in. It's more complicated than this.

It's a lose-lose situation. The fat everything else about MK is still going to be in the game like limbs flying and blade shredding is already fortunate as is, as people are pushing the violent game narrative very far these days. I suspect within another few years MK's going to be a rated T game.

Not too sure about that, the 90's outfits are pretty much in line with the old outfits.

What saddens me is that "less sexual" literally means plain ugly in Sonya's case in MK11. She was one of my favorite characters since MK1 and not because of how much skin she was showing.

The left is accomplishing the cultural shift the conservatives could never manage.

As a right-leaning parent, I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

Hell yeah, it matters.

I don't play Xenoblade Chronicles 2 around the wife. Even though I like the game itself, some of the characters are... um... I don't necessarily want to be seen playing that. :)

I wouldn't be into Dead or Alive anyway but if I did I'd be sure to play when she isn't around.

We watched Game of Thrones plenty so with Mortal Kombat I feel like she's far more likely to be put off by the violence rather than any costumes a character might wear.

It does feel like MK might be pandering to a crowd that may not be into their games or maybe it's something to do with e-sports. It's not automatically bad but I think it's a bit unfortunate if their customer designs are informed by fear of social media backlash.

If mk went this route, mark my words, next ps5 gta wiĺl not have prostitutes.
The release of the next GTA is going to be a massive moment in gaming.

If they continue as normal and sell more copies than ever before then basically the "SJWs" have lost and the proof is right there.

On the other hand if they decide to "grow up" and go for a more "mature and respectful" GTA then you can more or less say it's all over and the content of games will be increasingly dictated by lobby/activist groups.

I wonder if sites like Polygon etc would abandon their stances for GTA knowing that there is massive numbers of clicks in full and positive coverage. Or if they will absolutely go after the game for not changing its ways.

Thing is that GTA is very much a game that makes fun of all aspects of American society but so much has changed since 2013 I wonder exactly what they'd be able to get away with, or would be willing to try to get away with.

You ask any of these "games are problematic" people about their views and almost all of them will name drop GTA if asked to name specific titles.

It'll be an interesting time.
I don't want Rockstar to pander to the right either though so they are going to have to find a balance between ridiculing people on both sides.

I'd fucking LOVE it if they had parodies of some of the main people at the center of GamerGate, so long as they make fun of all sides.

This really doesn't feel like a healthy relationship to me. I'm not going to tell anyone how to live their life, but how honest can you be with someone you can't trust to be okay with you playing something as innocuous as Xenoblade Chronicles 2?

I play Soul Calibur around my children. My 10 year old daughter asked me why Ivy wasn't wearing any clothes, and I explained to her all about sadism and BDSM leather fetishes. I said to her, "as your mother is a sadist, this is how she would behave and dress if she wasn't afraid of being arrested." And she was like, "ok. Bitchin' sword though."

The problem @Fuz is that the "vote with your wallet" idea only works when you are mature enough to own any hypothetical failure of your company due to a screw up. I'm sure that if in case of this game is not as successful as the previous entries there will be a formulaic bingo card with all the excuse they can pull contains things like:
. Gamers are the worst
. You are a misogynist
. You are a manbaby
. You are a neckbeard

And in this bingo card there won' t be anything like "Hey, I guess screw up in something. I had some bad ideas which didn't help my product to sell even more".

Nah, it's a good relationship.

Honestly, I think the game is a bit cringey and the character designs are atrocious.
It's not like she'd be like "you are never playing this game again". For sure she'd be OK with me playing it but, to be honest, I'd feel a bit embarrassed playing it and that's the truth.

Like when she gets home from work and says "how was your day" I don't tell her I almost ripped my cock off looking at Bayonetta cosplay. I just say "yeah, fine". Not cos she'd be angry but because that's a bit embarrassing really.

So I can sympathize with anyone who doesn't want to play DoA or Gravity Rush in front of the wife/girlfriend.

At the same time I don't think it's good logic for changing MK character designs to a much more conservative style.

Lmfao "you're not going to wear a bikini to a fight"

Yeah you're probably not going to ever rip someone's face off their skull in a fight either, but you're trying to entertain people here aren't you? Yeah definitely not buying this.

No way, dude, I was in a fight at the beach one time and I threw a few green fireballs at the guy at hit him with a shadow kick.
The cunt was staggering around and then I uppercutted him so hard his fucking head flew right off!

Then a woman in a bikini walked by and I covered my eyes. Nobody needs to see that shit.

Rules for me, but not for thee anyone with a Y chromosome.
I don't know which woman exactly you meant, but I can get along with my wife on what is and what isn't fair most of the time.
But different rules for others is a common concept for humans, and I bet, other species as well.

Well it seems it’s not a big deal to you, and I share that with you. But I also can appreciate what it may mean to a Fan. You know, a fan ; derived from Fanatic. A true fan obsesses about every aspect of their interest.

Remember the above and then you’ll understand why people fuss over things.

I can't believe that these developers are okay with showing todays youth that it's okay for a man to beat up a woman and rip her spine out. They should be ashamed. Now they are basically saying it's okay to beat women. Just wait until people start emulating this. How disrespectful of them to think of women as nothing more than objects to brutalize.

It could almost be a comedy sketch to be honest.

A normal day at NetherRealm studios.

You enter a meeting room and they are showing of the latest visceral, or Xray, or whatever the fuck those attacks are called. Everyone is clapping and laughing. Ribs cracking, Skulls being shattered, spines broken... Johnny Cage punches someone in the nuts? Bwaahahahaha.
Then the director says "no, make them MORE brutal and MORE sadistic, our game takes things to the... *puts on Paul Heyman voice* EXTREEEEEME!"

Next meeting room. They are showing off new ideas for fatalities. People are whooping and holllering, jumping up and down on tables. Faces are being ripped off... heads decapitated and turned into tasteful household decoration... someone's brain gets turned into a kebab. Kung Lao fucking rips someone in half with a bladed hat by hitting them right up through the groin? OMFG that's AWESOME!
Then the director says "no, make them MORE bloody, MORE gory, we want to make it something you wouldn't show to grandma we want something.... *Heyman voice again* EXTREEEEEEME!"

Final meeting room. "Character Design". Complete silence. The intern is standing up front with a poster of a scantily clad woman with massive cleavage. People are silently weeping. One of the project leads is covering his eyes. The intern is like "...taking our character designs to the EXREEE-". He's cut off. The game director says "wtf are you doing? This game is about maturity and respect it's about keeping things reserved and conservative. You've taken things too far."

I am happy enough to have MK9 with all its sexiness.
Skipped MKX and will be the same with MK11. I do not buy the bullshit excuse about being practical/realistic/respectful when the game is about killing off the opponent in the most brutal unrealistic manner.

Society nowadays is to sensitive, bunch of pussies, ppl can't even be themselves and in a matter of decades it'll be like those movies where everyone has to think and act the same to be part of the status quo. I don't see police arresting or banning those women in the street of NY or in Europe that dress to their comfort but it is quite revealing. This shit is bullshit all around. So much hypocrisy and nonsense. It's legal to go top less now in NYC beaches but God forbid tits jiggle in a game or a woman looks sexy lol

Of course the sjw and what not come out the wood works in these scenarios.

That's because wearing more clothes in a actual fight is unpractical and unrealistic, hence some of the guy outfits, so it is the bulliest of all the shit excuses. Excuse made funnier given they have Ronda in the game as a publicity stunt, she damn sure didn't wear what these ladies wear in a actual fight.

Of course we've all seen NRS animations, it's well known they've never seen a actual fight in there life before. :messenger_smirking:

That reasoning doesn't make any sense. You also aren't going to kick people in the back of the head to make they're brain fly out in a fight.

I took the statement as a "just letting you know why things have changed" statement. I don't think they changed it due to any pressure from the outside.
WE have now dozens of japanese developers talking how they get pressured to do this. How many more do you need?

How many more this and that is sexist have games "journalist" to write in which they literally asking even publishers why they are doing this. More and more so called "Journalists" Harassing Developer and publisher when they do this.

Fantasy, games used to be a place where fantasy could run wild, where a director/creator/developer could be creative and crazy as they could because it was never reflective of real life and/or world scenario's.
That's why we used to game as it let us escape from the bullshit reality and problems, now gaming is the real world and it's views steer the direction game development goes or is heading.
I think the more realistic games get, the more often we are going to have conversations about how gaming should reflect the real world more often. Or at least close the gap. Stuff starts to look goofy when the character looks realistic, but the setting or her clothes don't. If it's Anime, did it's easier to get lost in the fantasy.

My argument as to why de-sexiness of the female characters is bad:

I think I made some valid points that both sides can understand.
View the bolded in a slightly different way. "Why" is making the female fighters less sexy bad? It's surprising that this is where some of the people are willing to draw their line in the sand for. Like was this "THE" reason why some of you bought MK games in the past?

I buy games because of intersting characters but in the West I can not find this anymore with female characters because they all now go after the same boring schema It is boring. You can not get invested because everyone feels the same personality wise. I was so glad I get something like Ciri from the Witcher and what did people complain about? Her high heels while fiighting monsters., I got Velvet from Tales of Berseria which was a fantastic protagonist but all I hear on a certain site is slutshaming the design a women reated because they love these kind of designs.

People rather dismiss a character now just because of what she is wearing. Same with Quiet. THE best character in Phantom Pain. Even Her outfit made sense in the highly sexualized world Kojima created but what did people do? They slutshamed her character even through the actress thought it was a fucking cool character.

I have more diverse and intersting charactes these days in Japanese and Asian media than I have in Western media because everyone feels the fucking same in the end. Aloy? Lara? Cassandra they are all the same type of character. And it becomes fucking boring
