Mortal Kombat 11 female characters were purposely made less sexual according to NetherRealms.

As I said in the other thread... NetherRealms and MK11 can get fucked with their double standards.

I get where they are coming from from a business perspective. you can't lose sight of that. i mean for all we know their suits just want to avoid any backlash by upsetting any vocally sensitive groups. just a shame that the censorship creates even more blatant inequality.

more than the gore, I think its the difference between male and female costume designs is what sticks out as obviously hypocritical.

I honestly understand where they’re coming from. They don’t want any drama especially as you said nowadays everything is offensive. So yeah, don’t care bout that as long as I’m going to get that smooth tasty animation

Seriously, fuck all this "faux" outrage culture and just play the fucking game. You don't like it, don't play or buy it. Damn.
There is "outrage culture" over the female characters being sexualized, and there is an "outrage culture" over that being changed. Two sides of the same coin IMO.
People are going to point out that sex was never the point of the game, so when they remove the skimpy costumes it just seems like pandering given that the graphic brutal violence (fatalities) has been kicked up a notch. How is depicting a female in a sexy costume worse then performing a move that depicts her being ripped in half? It's just absurd even to make that argument.

It's also hypocritical to say "You’re not going to be showing so much skin" in regard to the female roster, but then have many of the male roster half naked.

I think it says more about you when you have a problem with the clothes the women wear in the game

Also man your post was really hard to read what's with all the double negatives and the jargon.
"haters?" Really?
See, that's the thing. I don't have a problem with classic Mortal Kombat. I don't have a problem with this approach either. I trust the devs to do what's best for the series. That's why I am questioning ideologies that pretend to care about artistic choice when they only care about confirmation bias. If really wanting to see scantily clad women is your stance, then that's cool. Just be honest about it. But all this beating around the bush and pretending it's not just wanting scantily clad fighters is embarrassing. Own up to your desires, yo.

My skinny fragile body is offended by shirtless muscular men in this game. When are they being replaced by ugly soy boys?

"How dare this developer make up their own mind about the way they choose to portray women! We only defend a developer's artistic decisions when they validate our bias."

There is so much mental gymnastics going on that it boggles the mind.

Some common misconceptions about moves like this:
1. Not putting a woman in a bikini while she fights is not the same as being afraid of sexuality.
2. Not putting a woman in a bikini while she fights does not automatically make that woman ugly or plain.
3. Not putting a woman in a bikini while she fights does not mean that developers don't want to make their female characters attractive.
4. Putting a woman in a bikini while she fights with YOU being okay with it does not somehow make you more enlightened and less sexist.
5. Knowing women who are okay with women fighting in bikinis does not make YOU right when you rail against a perceived SJW agenda.
6. Fighting tooth and nail for your right to enjoy female dolls designed for your amusement is not somehow better simply because it conforms with what used to be the status quo.

Get used to change, haters. If you want to be genuine about your shock, you're going to have to choose a more substantive side to stand on because defending artistic choice only when it means you get to see boobs doesn't hold water.
1. People already flipping their shit when she has short pants on. Like this does nto happen in real life. Even more ridiculous. People cry it is not realistic for women to wear highheels in a game which basically lets you fight against dragons. Even more so. there are . a LOT of real acton scenes in Movies with women wearing heels and fighting. Fast and the furious for example^^

2. Making the design boring and their characters bland is todays norm with western sutdios because women can not only not wear interesting designs anymore. No they all have to be strong and independed. Yo wont see much difference between the new Lara and Aloy or Cassandra. They are basically he same trope like characters with the same personalities. No complare lets say todays Lara Croft with Angelina Jolie which was by FAR the best Lara Croft EVER.

3. F they do this with EVERY female character than there is something really wrong here. You bascially go for the ame design just with a different color. Like Mortal Combat 11 for example. All scenes I have seen so far look like the same design except different colors.

4. Not liking a women fighting in a bikini does not make you right either. Even more so it makes you fucking slut shame characters based on their looks. Also trying to argue how women who like these kind of designs do not matter. Is fucking ridiculous.

Designed by a women who love this kind of stuff. And still people want to educate her how sexist her designs are. I wonder who is the prick in this situation.

5. Havin all kind of designs is great diversity but going against everything that shoes skin which does happen right now is not only dangerous for artistic freedom but also it becomes boring. I have WAY more interest in Japanese designs because especially female characters are WAY MORE diverse in outfits and personality. They actually create interesting characters with actual persoanlities while western media seems to be really restricted because of these fucking lynch mobs on the internet also ERA.

6. Also No one is fighting tooth for nail. I want a vast diversity of female characters I think EVERYTHING should be allowed I might not like it but if it i bothering me too much or I think it is boring I will not by the game and move on. I do not go all out and try o change existing artistic visions because I think I know better than the artist him or herself. I am not the Lunatic here

The industry is big enough for games like gone home or even rape day to exist. If you do not like it do not buy it.

There are 2 sides to this.

It’s fandom. Nothing to do with politics, as most here don’t even care about politics...just like the real world.

And the other, are the above but are also pissed at the weak assed SJW sounding answer from the studio. And, sjw’s are annoying with the high morality elitism.

Kano is literally just wearing a belt across his naked torso.

Oh well, hopefully this sells enough copies in Iran to make up for me not picking it up.

The statement itself is fine, and I would be all for seeing a game that drops tropes and goes for realistic attire across the board. But that simply isn't the true story here. the male characters are all wearing the same (lack of) protection, and every single woman has been covered up, some almost completely. It's sexist. The female form is offensive but for males it's fine?

This sucks going against some iconic designs and brand attitude. It's insane to remove female skin for PC shit while the game is still marketed around the extreme fatality gore.

cool, whatever, great job for making an ultra violent game where you can rip people's faces off but thankfully are spared the sight of part of a life-giving breast

I usually think to myself, could I play this in front of my wife and not look like a creepy pervert? If the answer is no, then I usually don't buy the game.
Can you give a few examples of games you were fully intending to buy but decided not to based on this criteria?

I LOVE this sentence from him.

“I’m sure that will disappoint some fans. We don’t have bathing suit fighters, and I think that’s fine. If people are disappointed, I don’t regret making that change by any means.”
People need to realize how stupid it was for female fighters to be fighting in bathing suits. It was always super stupid.

It's a videogame about ripping spines out of people's body and they have a problem with clothes. That alone should make you think

Welp:

And it's not "bathing suit" they've toned down sexy where they could, hiding as much skin as they could.
On the other hand, they kept naked torsos.

Is it stupid to fight with naked upper body, by the way?

And last, but not least, is it a game with brutal killings end all that we are discussing, chuckle? A bit too nuanced I'd dare say.

I would refer to them as bikinis but why is this stupid?

All I've seen from this news is, remove fan service for the people who buy our games because the people who never will buy our games might complain. What could possibly go wrong.

“Our character lead, Brendan George, has been a breath of fresh air of just introducing new ideas. Our design is just getting more mature and respectful. You’re not going to wear a bikini to a fight. You’re not going to be showing so much skin. I think it’s just what the game is about: You’re going in to fight for your life, and you’re not going to be wearing such scantily clad items"

Hold up.

Are they basically admitting that they've been disrespecting women for the last 10 games and only NOW, with Mortal Kombat 11, they are deciding it's time to finally grow up and start respecting women?
Holy shit.

Also, you're not going to be showing so much skin in a fight?
Have these dudes even seen their own male character designs?

It's so idiotic.
"You would not be wearing scantily clad items to a fight."
"Check out our Kano character reveal!"

"You’re not going to be showing so much skin"
"you’re not going to be wearing such scantily clad items"

Somebody should have told Baraka.

These people are fucking morons.
Why not just say "we like our character designs and we feel these are the best ones we came up with"?
Gotta make sure people know how mature and respectful we've become over the years, by talking complete shit.

So the gameplay isn't important at all ... Just the amount of skin women are showing?

That's what I'm getting from these comments
But aren’t you getting anything else also? Seems like you’ve got a neuance filter on cranked to 10.

The thread is about the game toning down female clothes, nothing to do with gameplay. I can still think it's stupid and enjoy the game.

I haven't seen many comments talking about the gameplay.

Just fan service for chicks in skimpy clothes. I couldn't care less about that. Make the graphics good, the gameplay great and I'm satisfied.

Why do people act as if instagram doesn't exist?
Is feeling your body is sexy somehow demeaning?
Or is it disliking others because they look better?

Yes that's exactly what everyone is saying here.

Gameplay isn't important at all, just the amount of skin women are showing.

That definitely 100% exactly the main, probably only, point people are making here.

"Hey, I hear there's a new Mortal Kombat coming out."
"Oh awesome, I don't give a fuck about gameplay but I sure do hope the women are showing lots of skin".

That's what people are saying. Totally.

You haven't misrepresented anything at all there.
It's actually remarkable how totally accurate and honest, and totally not full of slimy weasel shit, your take is.

Well done.

Because the female fighters should mean more to gamers than just what they are wearing. They toned it down. It's not like they are fighting in Burkas.

This is pretty much the difference.

I wonder when they'll finally get after actresses?
On this picture, she is actually surrounded by men, wearing coats!

Which evil being forced her to "show some skin"?

Seriously, how practical is her outfit?

So the gameplay isn't important at all ...
In the context of "Taliban censored yet another game"? Not sure.

Because the female fighters should mean more to gamers than just what they are wearing.
What does Sub Zero "mean to gamers"?

Someone needs to tell the WWE and UFC womens divisions that they are dressed inappropriately!

Seriously though just give us choice (through the custom skins) No one is asking for Dead or alive levels anyways. Just a healthy balence like most of our wardrobes are *glances at my slutty Saturday night attire*

The only character that might go that far would be Millena anyways that suits her personality and of her using her sexuality as a weapon.

While is a little disconcerting seeing such statements the game is amazing, and NRS have proven they do listen to fan feed back (unless your a Rain fan) so if the demand is there, the more sexual outfits will return.

He means something because clearly, a different wardrobe seems to make some people upset.
I didn't know they've re-dressed sub zero, but if caring about wardrobe change is an indication, doesn't it mean that they also "mean something" to gamers?

Some of them new outfits look alright to me , however as a European i dont understand when everyone is ok with a game i can pull your spine out or throw my sharp hat to cut of your head is ok but cleavage is pushing it to far. I really dont get you Yanks sometimes.

I mean i haven't played a Mortal kombat game since the shitty one on N64 ?i might be misremembering , so this game is not for me anyway so i am not a customer to lose really

You are 100% correct with the bolded. I think the designers of MK11 actually "want" gamers to like the characters for more than their sex appeal. I can't blame them for wanting that.

Well, had (dear god, we are still discussing a game where one could study anatomy of humans by watching how someone is torned apart alive) developers wanted that, perhaps they would have done that without enlightened people telling them to.

So, the concept is that if one likes a person, sex appeal of the person reduces person's likability. I think it's an arguable concept.

Because this is an agenda against male gamers. It's like fighting discrimination by discriminating.

The first impression is the last. If the character is ugly many won't go past that.
Remember when Stryker in MK3 was called an ugly fatass electrician? Yeah.

I took the statement as a "just letting you know why things have changed" statement. I don't think they changed it due to any pressure from the outside.

They’re like cowboys trying to derail the thread all the time. That was supposed to be a bit of levity, no Ill intended.

Fantasy, games used to be a place where fantasy could run wild, where a director/creator/developer could be creative and crazy as they could because it was never reflective of real life and/or world scenario's.
That's why we used to game as it let us escape from the bullshit reality and problems, now gaming is the real world and it's views steer the direction game development goes or is heading.

My argument as to why de-sexiness of the female characters is bad:
I like sexy female characters in games. So I'll be passing on this game.

I think I made some valid points that both sides can understand.

An actual hottness effect (ok, strictly speaking, not an effect, merely a correlation, so it might or might not be the effect) on teacher ratings:

If female professors suffered from lower rankings based on their gender—as has been suggested—the results of the analysis of the data we pulled would look something like this:

Actual results:

a) no difference between genders
b) rating correlates with "hottness" of the teacher, better looking teachers get better score.

Just something to think about for those who try make Meleena more likable by desaturating her.

I don't mind the changes but the reasons are fucking ridiculous. No slightly scantily clad women (even though lots of the males are) because 'this game is about the realism of going in to battle'. The twat should have just not said anything.
