Microsoft Review Calls The Last of Us 2 “Significantly Ahead” of Anything on Console & PC

So there was a thread a few days ago about a Microsoft internal review of TLOU2 which leaked. It basically applauded my personal GOTY last year and hold it as a benchmark going forward, I absolutely agree.

My question is, out of all Microsoft's first party teams who do you feel (if any) are most capable of delivering a game of this size and quality? (obviously given the time and budget).

MS currently does not have a studio capable of competing at the level ND or Insomniac are at yet. We'll have to see how Perfect Dark turns out, that may have the best chance of hitting near that level.

I don't know that they even have a team that can.

They need to really, really let loose and allow that team to be as hardcore as they can be. I'm happy MS feels that way too as we need more publishers are open to allow their teams to make mature content like that.

Their studios can't compete and they can't nurture a studio at the level of Sony WWS Studios. That's why they buy.

They said this regarding the presentation of the game, something only a blind person could disagree with.

They also said Naughty Dog is incapable of making decent gunplay.

This would make more sense. TLOU2 is an immaculately presented game that is an absolute chore to play. Kinda like how people felt about RDR2, and they'd be right, although I still loved RDR2 because it wasn't misery porn.

Playground are up there with Naughty Dog in many ways. What they did with Forza Horizon was mindboggling on the XB1. I consider the two studios the best in the business (for first party, at least). If they nail it with Fable, that could well be Microsofts own TLoU2 moment.

Yeah I read that internal document/review from Xbox.

It doesn't come as a surprise that they praise TLOU2 being ahead of everything else given how true that is. No matter how much people hate Abby or Neil Druckmann or a little video game girl that shaved her head ... everyone knows what a monumental achievement TLOU2 is and the main reason of hate comes from jealously, because people wish that their favorite games/settings/ideas/etc. would get the technical love that TLOU2 did.

I agree with Microsoft that the story/narrative and everything else is just miles ahead and in a few years it will get even more praise because it will have aged beautifully (like Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, Spec Ops The Line etc.) even on platforms like Neogaf and 4chan.

I would argue maybe playground games, but outside of racing genre we have no clue what their output would look like. But I think out of all the developers they will be the ones to look for in terms of proven quality.

I think that they are right on both

Of course you do Monarch.

ND probably, I'm not that convinced by Insomniac though.

In terms of consistent quality and animation they are up there. ND goes a different direction in terms of a more realistic look in how their facial expressions, and character models look. Insomniac because of the studio's background with people that came from 2D inspired animated backgrounds have a lot more stylized approach in how they treat character models/facial animations.

But Insomniac is up there, and watching the cutscenes of Spiderman and the new Ratchet game really show how well they have matured.

Between TLOU2 and RDR2 there's a galaxy of difference in terms of gameplay, though. They both aim more or less for the same realistic feeling, but one do that with competence and still manages to get the best balance between animations and input latency making you perform snappy dodges and super quick and responsive actions when needed, the other is just a complete nightmare to play.

I personally think the latter is straight bullshit. Never had a single issue with shooting in Naughty Dog games, except for U3 at launch, which was fixed thanks to GAF.
Uncharted 4 Multiplayer at 60fps is the very best console TPS i've ever played by a large margin.. so i could never agree with that.
Along with Epic which was a major influence, ND also helped to revolutionize the TPS genre by bringing to the table verticality and mobility never seen before with the Uncharted series.

That being said, i think both melee (bare hands specifically) and shooting felt much better in the first TLOU compared to the sequel.
