Is this any good? 100 months, launch aligned. (So bear in mind that Xbox 360 is technically 12 months behind the above due to the headstart.

PS3 sales are estimated between months 65 and 77.

ah yes, thanks, you can see Wii flatten out there at the end as expected... but not as quickly as I expected it did really sell a ton

That's another one of the many mysteries of the Xbone planning/launch: Why didn't Microsoft prepare any (good) launch titles for Kinect 2? You know, games that would have demonstrated why Kinect was necessary and that would have made people want to buy it? What the hell were they thinking?
My guess: Kinect is a really bad game controller. There were some attempts that succeeded (Dance Central) and some horrible failures (e.g. Steel Battallion).

The fact that Kinect 2 was more accurate did not remove some of the most serious problems, like lack of tactile feedback and difficulty of mapping your limbs in 3D space to something in 2D screen. How do you make a fighting game, when your punches never actually connect? How do you make moving heavy objects on a screen challenging, when there is nothing preventing you from moving your hands whichever way? When you really start thinking of it, what kind of games are even possible with a camera controller?

The issue wasn't in the details. It was the whole concept.

Cool, so do your estimates have either of them breaking 90m, and do we know if PS3 has passed 360WW?

Xbox 360 shipped 83.7m as of March 2014.
PS3 shipped 71 million as of March 2014 (excluding FY2012)

In FY2012 we saw 16.5 million units shipped between PS2 and PS3. If the PS2 sold in the same amount it did during FY2011 which was 4.10m, then PS3 would have shipped 12.4 million which takes PS3 total to 83.4m. But of course the PS2 would have seen a decline over that 4.1m number and so we can state that PS2 shipments were less than 4.1 million (as evidenced by FY2010 to 2011 decline) and PS3 shipments must be over 12.4 million.

So with one year less on the market the PS3 has matched and potentially exceeded 360 sales. A market research firm that I get data from confirmed that the PS3 install base is higher than the 360 install base worldwide.

As of today, both are around ~88 million and will get to 90 million before being discontinued. Despite the higher price, the PlayStation 3 will have shipped more than the Xbox 360 once all is said and done.

As an Xbox only gamer last gen, I am not the least surprised. MS started off so well, but the last couple years it felt like they were going through the motions and more focused on casuals and the next console. I still had some great games to play, but was constantly tempted to buy a PS3.

Launch to 2009 were the 360's best years. After that, there was literally no reason to buy a Xbox 360.

Best years of the PS3 happened to be from September 2009 to present.

Don't call it a comeback.

Well, that and the fact that in spite of the "LOL worse than Gamecube!" click-bait stuff from early last gen, the PS3 pretty much outsold the Xbox 360 from the moment it launched, world-wide.

The PlayStation brand was very strong at the PS3 launch and was seen as the de-facto console gaming brand. Especially after the success, and continued success of the PS2. The PS3 just got a lot of things wrong but despite that Sony supported the device well both with amazing software and hardware revisions in order to create value around the console.

edit: I was going somewhere with this post but gave up. Basically Xbox weak, PlayStation strong..... but then Xbox Strong and PlayStation a bit weaker..... yall got it. k goodnight.

You might think that, but most people disagreed. Kinect was a massive success, vitalizing the 360 and making its later years into its highest sales years. In this it differed from almost every other console. (This is the reason why even though Xbox One is ahead of 360 now, that's not an indication it will do as well.)

LOL, on the contrary, I'm going to bed now. But seriously, I hate it when people try to make themselves look smart by spewing all sorts of bullshit, when in reality, they are making themselves look ignorant.

jesus christ dude, chill what's with your combative tone anyway?

Besides unless someone came out with some actual oficial numbers, xbox one sold trough numbers are pure speculation right now.

Gotta say, I though the xbone would be in a worst position as today, not sure if a comeback but not bad at all.

I think it shows the strengths and weaknesses for both consoles last gen. The xbox 360 finally was a major competitor to the Playstation brand selling nearly the same amount. However they came out a year before and lost their lead eventually. The Playstation sold a bit more than thr 360 and made a recovery but it was not first place and was really close to the 360.

X360 came out first, but sales weren't great. Many people were still waiting for PS3 to come out and destroy it. Only after the PS3 came out and didn't show that it was vastly superior, did the X360 really take off. In fact, 3rd party games made the PS3 looked worse. Only years later when developers got more used to the PS3, it became the lead platform due to easy port to X360 than vice versa and great Sony 1st games did the PS3 start closing and finally taking the lead.

Its amazing overall when you look at it now, almost 3 years after current gen started. Especially with the sales the Wii had. I remember some saying they both wouldnt get close to catching the Wii....10 million is pretty close if they reach 90 million.

The last time its been that close for home consoles...it was only Nintendo and Sega as the main players.

I agree with with those saying MS was going in a different direction as far as content the later years before current gen started. Hell...Sony released TLoU and GOW Ascension in 2013... They could have held TLoU for current gen. I think MS went Kinect heavy the last few years before XBO.

And its probably a reason why they tried to push Kinect with the XBO.

What is Microsoft's stance on repaired x360 units? Are they including them into the "total shipped" numbers? Even if they are not, I expect that large amount of people just re-purchased console after death of old one, which lowers the "effective" install base a bit down.

Also, I think that because of the launch X360 woes, notable amount of x360 users decided to purchase additional console when Slim version appeared in sales. I don't think that there was many PS3 users who were not satisfied with Fat and have moved to slim/superslim.

Yeah, the PS3 story is pretty amazing. The brand had something to do with it, but not nearly as much since the brand surely did shit when they released the damn thing. It was a combination of things, among price cuts and games, that made that comeback one for the ages.

;)

Ok, I may have been overly aggressive, but I still think it's ridiculous to be calling others "short sighted" when he has no clue what he is talking about. There is literally zero chance that the XB1 will reach 80 million in sales. The XB1 is already starting to track behind the PS3 and it's very likely that it will fall further behind as time goes by. I definitely see 45-50 million being possible, though.

Britania rules the waves.
When can we expect Nintendo and Sony's shipment details?

The Xbox One is more reliable than the 360 so any data we do get that has sell-through will be more accurate than 360 data as a significant number of people bought more than one 360.

Think Nintendo on the 29th and Sony on the 30th.

Yeah, for casuals. I was referring to hardcores.

There were more exclusives, Japanese 3rd party games, etc. coming out for PS3 since 2009. Plus PS3 still managed to catch up to Xbox 360 in sales, despite Kinect being very successful for Microsoft.

And Kinect was the only reason why they sold more 360's from 2010 to present. The 360 was about only 3 million above PS3 worldwide by the time that came out.

This is not true at all--it's almost the reverse of what happened. From the moment it launched, the PS3 sold as fast as 360 had. Beginning with the first holiday after launch, it was selling faster and closing the gap. Years later, when you say it began closing, it actually began finally losing ground. This was because of the success of Kinect, which allowed Microsoft to extend the gap from early launch again. That's why they're neck-and-neck now.
