Mass Effect Legendary Edition made me just realize what a broken mess console gaming has become

Imagine thinking that 30 minutes to download 9gb is "slow", kids these days have no idea how good they have it. I used to have to resort to ASCII porn because 14.4 modem was just too screaming fast lol. I also remember how cool it was that I could download for hours to get a single mp3, the good old days
Lmao... I recall those days too. Man I'm getting old. Recall times before modems and windows. Also remeber getting my first pc with a hard drive and modem. 2400 baud modem 1 hour for a naked lady Pic in 1992 (I was a horny teenager). BBS systems with ascii terminal chat and muds.

Yeah it's fast today, but I still
Or move to the country side 🤣 I lived in Kassel and my first apartment had 6mbit tops nothing more... That was until 2017 second apartment had 50mbits of which I generally got 23 or less...

Moved away to a small town now I have officially 250mbits of which I get regularly 270... I could get up to 500mbits if I would be willing to pay more.
Do you have bandwidth caps there? In PA Comcast has put 2tb caps on everyone. Greedy bastards. They don't like cord cutters like me who don't watch TV.

This is not a console gaming experience, it's ME Legendary Edition mess. That's it.
This thread is full of wrong and bullshit hyperboles. All physical games are perfectly fine, even without day one patch. You CAN play them.
Digital people are trying to make you share their misery of not owning their games. Don't do it.
Discs are very far to be glorified keys, they contains 99.9% of the time all the game, you can play without internet, and when internet is mandatory, a warning is always present.
A few games games are like this mess, the vast majority of physical games are perfectly fine.

Honest question, for those who live in rural areas, is Starlink an option yet? Speeds look really good. Unsure of cost though.

Not available in my area and looking at pricing, not sure I would even pay for if it were. Seems a bit pricy and the cost of moving to digital over physical (Phys in my area tends to be on sale quite often outside of Nintendo First Party releases) does not offset the increased cost.

You must be joking 🤣

Xbox One games. Need to be online one-time during install to download specific config files (separate from actual game patches).

This is what I am talking about...

Those are back compat games on Series systems that must require some per game adjustments. A small price to pay for significantly better backwards compatibility capabilities.

Sorry, mate, but I think you'll be called boomer now.

Ah, the Xbox experimental system guarantee. My favorite Xbox experience was having to lightly boil one of my lost Odyssey discs to get it to work due to the packaging causing a layer of film on the disc supposedly. Imagine a company so full of western incompetence that the user actually has to figure out how to make the final product work.

This.
The people that say that disks are only glorified DRM have no idea what they are talking about. Most physical games include the entire game on the disk and they work perfectly, but some people treat the very small minority of games that arent like that, like multiplayer games and CoD like it's all games being like that.
They are just spreading false information just to try to get more people into digital, for whatever reason.

More a case of people being realistic. If your console is connected to the internet, you are getting the update patches. Once patched, your game saves might not even be compatible if you go back to the version of the game on the disk, etc.

PC Experience: 1 Logs into EA App, 2 Selects Download, 3 Plays game

That's my main gripe for paying for something physical that's actually not physical anymore. The disc just being a software license gate check on that other piece of physical hardware you own but can only use provided software license approval.

You can buy physical, but it's only concept at this point and not reality.

Since nearly all games since launch run on the one and I am only aware of one dmc v having a series x version I don't think it's that small.

Nope unlimited luckily.

this is only for Xbox One games since they need a config file so that the system knows how to handle it. this is not the case for Series X games

you either received bad info or you didn't read the info correctly

BUT people should bug Microsoft about this issue so that they implement an option to download all back compat configuration files in bulk for future use. that should be an option

Yeah but nearly all games are xbox one games nowadays still. They fucking print series x on the box and can't have a stupid series x file on the disc. That's a big nope to me and there is no excuse for this.

U have a series x you need to online to activate your disc game. That's why my x box one x will be my last ms console ever. 🙄

One time only small config file needed which hardly needs a high speed internet. Though i was able to play Valhalla right away offline after installing the disc. Series X games don't require one time activation. Only Xbox one BC games need one time activation.

Also, if you own or PS5 but cant afford internet then i don't know you should even buy Nextgen consoles. If you rich enough to afford 500$ consoles but can't pay for internet then something not right.

Every game requires patch update to fix shit and you need to go online or you will play game with bugs nd all.

It's not about internet speed for me. It's about owning working shit you pay for. If you like having a license and being at the mercy of publishers so be it. I also avoid buying totally broken physical versions. I would rather wait for goty edition or don't buy them at all. Funny thing is I also like collecting and I suspect I should be worth at least 15 average ps4 owners to Sony since I own more then 200 physical copies. For ms maybe 8 one owners... But if I would agree with the stupid digital only future... Well my time is extremely limited nowadays with 2 kids that would boil down to 2 to 3 games per system per year... Anyway the good thing is can retire buying games now and play until the end of my life or the end of the live of my consoles without worrying to run out of games 🤣

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
I love how many idiots keep telling the OP to go digital, despite the OP clearly stating that his connection is very slow and going digital only is not a realistic option for him.

It also only takes up 20-35 gigs of your hard drive space at a time, since very few will be playing all of them at once.

I appreciate that they respect that nstead of eating the full 80 gigs on Xbox or 100 gigs on ps5.

I can install only the game I want to play and have room for other games on top of it.

Choosing which game you want to install should've been available on the consoles. The devs simply didn't do it, because it is possible to implement. I remember being surprised when I got the option to choose which game I want to install in the Yakuza collection.

Not true. Xbox One and older games sometimes require a one time config file download because they run in backward compatibility mode in Xbox Series. I don’t know why some people say they have to download these and others don’t. Mass Effect LE runs as an Xbox One game with a performance patch for Xbox Series X. So, it might need to config file. I don’t know.

P.S. Using discs for games probably won’t even be a thing next console gen. PC gaming has basically been all digital for. Long, long time.

It fucking has series x on the box... So no one can bother to put the fucking config file on the disc at ms or ea/bioware? And who of you has a real series x game and can confirm an offline install is possible. Because a quick Google search doesn't show anything what is really a series x game. I only know of a dmc v version.
And I don't know why any would advocate for a digital only future for consoles. Then we don't need consoles anyway. Just play on a PC or stream. If that's the future I am out.

This is probably an American issue I guess as in the UK we don't have data caps here and internet it pretty fast so this stuff just doesn't bother me.

As long as the Xbox is set as your home console you don't need to be online to play anything. People keep spreading that 2013 always online DRM FUD and getting away with it.
You do have to be connected to the internet just to set up the console though.

so what you're saying is, u wanted to play a game from disc, it didn't work, you tried to sidestep a process that worked fine, if slowly, in numerous ways, sometimes going as far as breaking things... it worked fine, u just wanted it to work another way which it couldn't... so u wrote this post.

Imo, you wasted a lot of emotion on a nonissue.

It is avaliable on Xbox.

It only installs ME1 and then from the launcher you can choose to uninstall ME1 or install 2 or 3. That way you only need to eat the HDD space for 1 game at a time.

It doesn't work that way on PS?

Games should be playable on the disc form, no excuses are accepted here

Agreed. I'm not sure if its EA or MS, but this can be corrected easily.

Not all fucking games on disk have all this junk going on. So something with how its being authenticated or verified or something like that was done wrong, that isn't a normal thing for anyone to really be out here making it sounds as if OP made a mistake.

He bought it on disk, it should install no fucking issue on disk. I do it all the time, shit I did it with RE8 with zero issue and beat that game 5 times lol

Thats my concern, these consoles aren't built like they used to be. I can plug in my ps2 or NES , TG16 (if i still had it) and could plug and play. I know as i just did this with my ps2 the other day to play some champions of norath and compare the baldurs gate dark alliance port to the ps2 original that just came out.

Yet my ps4 overheats and sounds like a jet engine, can't game on it without the room temperature rising 10 degrees (who needs house heating with the ps4). Switch is a godsend, but what happens when the batteries die and you can replace them? Then there is the ps3, my bluetooth and wifi just randomly failed, controllers don't connect even with a cord plugged in half the time they just blink all 4 lights, plus the rubber on the sticks is melting (no joke, the leak sticky liquid every few days no matter how much you clean them off).

I too want to enjoy my retirement playing games till I die. I'm 42 now but in 25 years I will be that age and even now I have enough games to last, I keep buying though, and playing what i can with the limited time available.

I think OP is doing something wrong. They wouldn't ship 2 disc's for 21 gigs.

All 3 games must be on the disc's, but it only installs the first by default. If he chooses to install 2 or 3 it will tell him the game is requesting an update, but it's probably pulling the files from the disc.

Only way for him to tell is to disconnect from the internet. I can't test ot because I bought it digitally.

Physical will be really dead once Starlink is fully deployed. Having a bad internet connection due to your location will be a thing of the past.

I don't think so. The disc version installs stuff from both discs without asking if you want all three games and you can't uninstall anything from the launcher.

A few years ago when the whole game was always on the disc I would agree.

This is an exaggeration.

Execpt for online games all other of my physical copies works without the need to download data or patches.

There are some games that are not actually on the disc but they are very few and I simply avoid to buy them.

So strange that they operate completely different on both machine.

I expected them to be the same.

Like that makes it any better.......So lol to you good sir.
I was not joking. I think going all digital solves most of the problems exposed in the OP. Because most of those problems are related to how physical editions has become obsolete in today's publishing system, where games are launched with day one patches. When you go all digital, a lot of those things become invisible.

I understand you can't agree but I was not trolling.
