Critics Hail Mass Effect 3 as the First Must Have Game of 2012 as EA and BioWare Ship Over 3.5 Million Units to Retailers Worldwide

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--USA Today proclaims it is “the first true blockbuster game of the year.” Game Informer says BioWare delivers “one of the most intricately crafted stories in the history of the medium.” Already having earned over 30 perfect scores and an average review score of 95*, enthusiasm for Mass Effect™ 3, the latest title from BioWare, a Label of Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: EA), is at an all-time high. Over 3.5 million units of the award-winning game have already shipped worldwide in its first week of release, making Mass Effect 3 the first pop culture event and the biggest entertainment launch of 2012.

“whether you possess a storied history with the series or come in with a clean slate, Mass Effect 3 expertly entangles you in its universe and inspires you to care about its future.”

“We have been truly humbled by the amazing response from fans and critics for Mass Effect 3,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, Co-Founder of BioWare and General Manager of EA’s BioWare Label. “The game is a gripping, engaging experience where the decisions and choices you make will truly stay with you for the months and years ahead. We are all incredibly proud of Casey Hudson and the teams in Edmonton and Montreal for delivering the best game BioWare has ever made.”

Mass Effect 3 was released earlier this week to incredible hype amidst high expectations. Critics around the world have heaped praise on the game, awarding it with over 30 perfect scores from a wide variety of outlets including MSNBC, USA Today, Game Informer, G4TV, the New York Daily News, Eurogamer (UK), The Guardian, PlayStation: The Official Magazine (UK), Official Xbox Magazine (UK) and more. The game has been lauded for delivering both the satisfying experience longtime fans have been yearning for while also being the best entry point to the series for players new to the franchise. GameSpot, who awarded Mass Effect 3 with one of the many Editors’ Choice awards the game has received, declared “whether you possess a storied history with the series or come in with a clean slate, Mass Effect 3 expertly entangles you in its universe and inspires you to care about its future.”

Mass Effect 3 thrusts players into an all-out galactic war to save mankind from an ancient alien race known only as the Reapers. Players will assume the role of Commander Shepard, a war-torn veteran who’s willing to do whatever it takes to eliminate this nearly unstoppable foe. With a team of elite soldiers at their side, each player decides how they will take Earth back, from the weapons and abilities they utilize to the relationships they forge or break. Mass Effect 3 also features the Galaxy at War** system, where players will have the option to fight the galactic war on multiple fronts. The system includes the franchise debut of co-operative multiplayer, as well as the latest iOS exclusive app, the cover-based, third-person shooter, Mass Effect Infiltrator. Progress made in each of these components will directly link back to the player’s main campaign, helping Commander Shepard rally the forces of the galaxy to eliminate the Reaper threat once and for all.

The Mass Effect series is one of the most highly decorated series in the history of games, having earned over 200 international awards to date. Mass Effect 3 is available now on the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC. The Mass Effect Infiltrator App is available for $6.99 from the App Store on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore. Electronic Arts chief executive John Riccitiello is feeling “awfully good” about the Mass Effect 3 launch.” Speaking at today’s Wedbush Technology, Media and Telecommunications Conference in New York City, Riccitiello estimated that the game sold 890,000 units during the first 24 hours in North-America alone, meeting the company’s expectations: “We anticipated it doing well, so we’re happy.”

I think the keyword here is "estimated". He estimates that the game sold according to his predictions. That's like saying I guess it sold as well as I said it would. It doesn't mean the game actually sold 890.000 copies (or anywhere close to that).

Oh, he estimates ...

I don't think it's "estimate" you are talking about because he would say that is sold close to million then.

This makes me want to buy ME3 right now, but still gotta finish up ME2. I'll probably get it once the price drops.

That's quite brutal.

Here is what Mass Effect (Xbox 360) and Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360) sold during its first month.

Of course we can't compare them with the numbers given on this thread since they count PC + Xbox 360 + PS3.

Mass Effect --- 473,000 (12 days)
Mass Effect 2 --- 572,000 (5 days)

he would have the most accurate data to be able to make a pretty good estimate, you really think Acti/MS has the exact number of copies sold every time they do a COD/Halo first day PR?

24 hours in, and so far, it's sales are well deserved. Maybe i'll change since people are talking badly of the ending, but then again people were saying ME3 would be shit, so yeah.

Why does he feel “awfully good”? Does he feel guilt?

It's kind of an American English slang phrase that might not make sense elsewhere.

By the same token, back ten years ago you would see people in California refer to something as "sick" or "wicked" when they actually thought it was really cool.

Only this can express how I feel.

You thought this was a COD level of game? Nearly a mil in one territory in such a short time frame is incredible.

Like I said, I overestimated. I don't really follow game sales, but yeah, I thought it might do closer to the 1.2M range. Isn't COD like 4M day one?

It;s actually proper english word that has been in use for hundreds of years :)

I still use "sick" :(

30 hours in and it's been fantastic so as bitter as I am towards EA and Bioware I have to say well deserved. Hopefully the end game doesn't completely blow like ME2.

Awfully means very
Looking it up and that actually seems to be primary definition  Something learned for today

So do we get controller support for PC now or is that apparently still far too expensive for the budget?
This is by far the biggest turn off for me. They said it was because of the revamped menu system for mouse at first but still leaving out the controller option is crazy :/

It's a far better game than ME2 thus far, so it definitely deserves it.

I do feel bad for anyone jumping into the series with this one, because Bioware lied their asses off. You really had to have played the previous games to get the most out of this one.

Also, uh.... despite everything I've said... the multiplayer is actually pretty damn fun. I definitely need to eat some crow on that.

Sold in or sold through? As I recall when ME2 came out they said it sold some number of millions of copies only to clarify at a later investor call that it had sold through fewer copies than they initially reported.

I'm happy to hear it from you because it means that I'll certainly enjoy it as I loved ME2.

if only I don't run into face importing bug... were you affected by it?

They say estimated, but they can 100% know what they shipped, so I'd have to assume sold through.

Well deserved, though 890,000 sounds quite..specific. Usually they say stuff like "nearly 900k" or "close to a million".

But still nice.
