When you get a new DS, the game will generate a new friend code. The friend codes you've added *should* remain, but you'll need to tell those people your new code.

I was under the impression that a game will *lock* onto a particular MAC address that a DS will have. It does however let you transfer the game to a different DS if you check the WFC options.
When you do the swap, ask if you can do this before going home.
