For the players? Try ‘For the Blockbusters’

Skepticism of Ryan isn’t solely about his focus on profitable software. That is something every company does. But it is notable at Sony because the shift comes while Sony also seems less determined to deliver features that fans want.

To that point, Sony recently announced it is closing the digital stores for the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita. And Sony continues to forego investment into backward compatibility solutions.

Again, Sony is making these decisions to preserve profitability, but it’s also something that a company might decide to do “For the Players” even if it were losing money.
Nice Shawn Layden reference.
Six years ago, former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden took a moment out of the company’s E3 presentation to talk about a cult rhythm action game Vib Ribbon. He explained that the game wasn’t a multimillion-copy seller, but it was worth it because it tried to give players new experiences. It was lip service to a game that Layden once worked on, but it was clear that he was actually proud of it. And it was part of a story that Sony was telling about taking chances on game.

I don’t think Sony ever cared about Vib Ribbon. But Layden knew that if he could convince us that he cared about the games, it would be easier to convince us that the games were worth caring about.

Ryan, meanwhile, is trying to convince us that the games are worth caring about because they’re $70, and that means they must be important.

Jim Ryan is starting to get it from gaming websites now. Not just gaffers and twitter fans (RIP TheAPP99) I wonder if Jim will feel compelled to respond.

Jim doesn't need to respond to anything that idiot Jeff Grubb writes. That guy is a clown. I stopped reading at the indie part in this. PlayStation has been pushing indies very hard. Go look at their two PS5 showcases last year or any State of Play over the past 2 years. Go look at how they're putting brand-new indie games on PS+ Day 1. Go look at how they'll have a whole day of new indie game announcements on the PlayStation Blog that gets pushed to their tens of millions of fans on Twitter, Facebook and Youtube. This clown has no idea what he is talking about. Probably mad that Sony doesn't leak things for him to talk about in his dumbass Summer Games mess thing. It hurts his ego

None of this will end up in anything, we gamers always give a free pass to anything because of brand loyalty.

Sony showcases Indies, people complained they want AAA games ... MS show Indies, MS is winning.
PS plus happens, one side complains they do not own the games, Gamepass happens, those same people are now happy....
ETC

we always have 2 sides trying to fit the narrative that suits their favourite brand to "win"

Now call me suspicious but is it interesting how after the avalanche of gamepass "articles" now we have "Sony is doomed"
it is the same thing that happened before the unveil of xbox one and ps4 generation.

you know i thought sony fanboys were going crazy saying this was a coordinated attack but this is straight up getting suspicious now. its all happening at once too, which makes it even more suspicious. its literally like groudhog day right now.you would think sony increased the price of ps5 by $200 with amount of shit they are receiving.

This is getting boring now. Jason article was bunch of incidents put together to push his already pre formed opinion. Now American news outlet pushing Sony is doomed articles on daily basis. I wonder from where the motivation is coming from considering facts which actually matter ( like Sale number and actual games) don't back up this narrative.

Yup, becoming a pattern which is very interesting. They started writing negative articles on PS5 because they are short on Pro Xbox news atm.

Sounds logical. Add that to the weird rumours that everyone takes them as truthful and I wish gaming news were made by real journalists, people who took their time to investigate, ask for sources and didn't make an article in 5 min for clicks or because some marketing team asked them to do it.

His whole indie part of the article is completely false, HALF of their showcase is dedicated to indies. The PS5 reveal had pathless, stray, solar ash. Fucking bugsnax was a PS+ launch game for PS5? Like every month we are getting more games, actually smaller games. This month we got Zombie army 4 which is tiotally a AA game from rebellion. Last month we got Maquette? They did the whole stay at home initiative with The witness , enter the gungeon, thumper.

Like Kena, stray, Solar Ash, Little devil inside SIfu?

Guy is really trying to get clicks off of Jason's article by writing this piece. Maybe they need to be a little more transparent. But to think that suffling of studio talent and prioritizing projects is not part of the business. it's like Herman hulst doesnt know games, or shue Yoshida is not doing what he loves in signing great indies?

God sometimes Grubb needs to just take a step back and really think about what he's writing. He writes like there's an alternate reality than actually whats there.

True, but multiplatform indies are finding more success on Xbox (Game Pass) and Switch (because it's portable). Outside of the indies featured front and center, there is really no big indie push on PlayStation anymore and I can't imagine indie devs even like the current Sony leadership given the comments Jim has made and the awful way they just treated Vita indie devs.

Its almost like all these media hit jobs, fake news articles, and twitter so called insiders spinning the most fever dream, Phil now dominates the industry, fantasy, narrative are all coordinated effort to make the public no longer want a ps5. Jeff grubb in particular leading the charge. Well coordinated hit job, smear campaign, fake news conspiracy against PlayStation. Plain as day.

What are you talking about? They are part of State of play which is how Sony communicates now. They now roll more indies each month into PS+ for PS4-PS5. Like they have been pumping up titles like Bugsnax, Kena. It's like people live in alternate universe.

ANd these are exclusive indies mostly that they showcase and do lengthy showings on. Bugsnax had people humming/singing it's catchy song because of how much Sony showed that game.

I'm looking forward to this thread developing into a nuanced and mature discussion of Sony's current market strategy, in which adults allow other adults the space to consider the viability of Jim Ryan's approach, investigate Sony's release diary, and reflect on how Sony might recapture the successes seen during the PS4 era. It's the maturity, wisdom, and considered sensibility that GAF brings to all Sony-related topics that I've enjoyed all these years.

Keep a non-profit platform running "For the players"? This is some take. Amazing. These fucking idiots just like the sound of their own voice and are offended about....something, so feel compelled to stamp their feet about it.

Cancel culture essentially. It's disgusting.

I love how Layden is now heralded after years of being told what a shit job he was doing

And before that it was Jack Tretton copping all the flack. Then he leaves and becomes popular

And before that it was Kaz Hirai who became the meme of the internet and wasn’t living up to Kutaragi but is now beloved

I mean, not everybody likes to get surprise buttfucked by sony you know?
Being a fan it's no the same as being a slave precisely.

Steam and Xbox treat you better if you buy digital games now, why would you not compare it?

This starts to be silly.

MS is all talk so far and no delivery.

Sony is no talk and all about delivery.

Journalists and influencers live on talk - that is what they make money from.

Ergo: MS makes them money while Sony much less so.

And now we are surprised they like MS and criticise Sony? Just follow the money...as always.

And never forget that we as customers only care about delivery - that is all that matters.

Thought I was the only one seeing this from so called hardcore Sony fans.
