Next week Switch's 3rd Party sales during 2020 will overtake PlayStation's, at the end of the year, the actual result will be over 4 million on the Switch and at best 3.5 million on the PlayStation ecosystem.
Konami could end up the #1 3rd Party publisher for 2020, as Momotaro is likely to add 400K additional sales in the remaining two weeks while eBaseball will likely add an additional 50K, their overall sales will be around 1.65 million for the year with just two games and three SKUs

We need to see the price cut for Nintendo Switch first before claiming it didn't stand a chance against DS.
Its not impossible, but 8 million is a big gap to close. Plus sales won't keep growing forever, this year or next year will be the peak and then sales will plateau or decline.

If Switch has a much longer lifespan, then mayyyyyybe it could outsell the DS.

So it could, but it probably won't.

I just noticed that Hyrule Warriors AoC slightly outsold the combined sales of Pirate Warriors 4 (Switch+PS4). D̶o̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶ ̶h̶a̶p̶p̶e̶n̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶k̶n̶o̶w̶/̶r̶e̶m̶e̶m̶b̶e̶r̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶n̶u̶m̶b̶e̶r̶s̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶P̶5̶S̶,̶ ̶d̶a̶t̶e̶ ̶a̶l̶i̶g̶n̶e̶d̶?̶

Edit: Screw me I'm blind. Looks like AoC is the best-selling musou amongst the three in the list and that's on a single platform.

Pirate Warriors 4 will get a big update in a few weeks when the Top 100 numbers release, a lot of games that launched at the beginning of the year might get a pretty substantial increase due to sales outside the Famitsu Top 30. This will happen for a lot of the games that had Switch SKUs, hell we might find out that Trails of Mana Switch ended up outselling the PlayStation 5 version, while Persona Scramble on the Switch could end up over 100K

Especially One Piece, Hatsune Miku, Mario & Sonic Olympics, Fitness Boxing, Minecraft Dungeons, Story of Seasons, Taiko no Tatsujin, etc will end up much higher than their current totals. One Piece because of it's a very early 2020 release, while the rest of the games will get this boost due to their family friendly nature.

In the transition from PS2/Xbox/GC/DC Nintendo said that it was difficult and expensive to make the leap to HD. Squeenix and other japanese devs complained about how HD towns are hard. Strangely, there wasn't as much of this talk during the transition to PS4/Wii U/X1. It was the opposite: there was a lot of talk about how easy it was to move over, how such-and-such company was so supportive of indies and how painless it was to move a game over, etc.

The expense of HD assets didn't go away, they just shuffled the issue under the rug. Japanese devs cannot afford to move to the PS5 and XsX quite yet. Switch is still on the market and PS4 has a huge installed base. There's very little incentive for them to develop solely for PS5 and I expect a ton of games built for Switch/PS4 with a XsX/PS5 "boosted" version.
I think a big reason for that is because the outsourcing of asset creation around the transition period from the Xbox gen to X360 gen (sometime around 2005?) was just getting off the ground.

One of the first companies set up for such work, Virtuos, was founded in 2004. As outsourcing gradually became more established and commonplace, expenses would go down and efficiency would go up (within reason).

Having improved Internet for transfer of such data also helps I assume.

I never considered this. Good insight!

It's nothing to do with SONY. Japan went mobile decades ago and people can say the Switch is a console but we all know its the successor to the 3DS is all but name

Switch's form factor helps but its main advantage is software. Ring Fit is going to outsell the vast vast majority of PS5 and Switch games and it can only be played on the TV. Likewise Momotaro is a game primarily played on TV and that is doing incredibly well.

Consoles can do well in Japan with the right software, it's just that most companies haven't been very good at creating mega hits for Japan recently.

Konami is taking advantage of Nintendo Switch holiday season like a champ while Capcom is preparing to enter the scene as well with MH Rise.

SQE, on the other hand, still no news about AAA games on Nintendo Switch.

I don't agree if you look at the sales of the Switch is follows similar sales trends of Nintendo handhelds and Japan been mobile central for decades.

There's a difference between "dominated" and performing well. The PSP, PS3, and PS4 all sold well to great there.

I know that, not that boards thinks that way for the XBox One (which is MS most profitably console ever) But if one looks at the sales of the PS3 and PS4 Vs Nintendo handhelds it's a non contest and the PS4 hasn't performed anything like in the numbers of the PS2 in Japan despite is being massive in the West. Its clear Japan turned to mobile gaming decades ago

There's a reason why SONY looked to launch the PS4 in the USA before Japan you know

Switch is also doing well in many other countries though. Is the US mobile-centric because GBA, DS and Switch all did well there?

Handhelds have done well in Japan because that's where the strongest software is. If an appealing console came out with the software Switch has, it would also do very well.

To look at it another way, if Japan was really mobile-centric then the Switch Lite would be the best performing version. Instead, the vast majority of Switch buyers choose to pay more money in order to play games on a TV, which shows that playing video games on a TV is something the market values highly.

I think the meme of switch only selling because its handheld needs to die. Yes being a hybrid has surely helped the switch, but the lite sales show that Jap gamers like the felability of the switch to the tune of 100$ premium.

Its the software plain and simple. If PS4 had the Nintendo games it would of sold those numbers too. I

Just look at the software chart and see how many 3+ million sellers there are. Then you have the beast that is ACH with 6 million sales.

Mario at this point is actually on the low end, but anything with Mario in it seems to shit out 1 million in sales in Japan.

ACH, Smash, Pokemon, Splatoon +BOTW+Mario thats the reason the switch is going nutso in Japan. Add in Ring Fit thats become a phenomenon there and can only be played on a docked Switch and I think its clear that its not being a portable machine thats driving it.

And mobile gaming and "console" gaming are such drastically different markets you can't even compare them. Mobile gameing is dominated by MTX/F2P/Gotcha bite sized games. They are basically no value games. No matter how much developers want to, mobile games are not going to be equal to a Mario or a Smash or a GTA where someone will pay 40/50/60 dollars for the game. They will always be regulated to being quasi gambling cash machines. Mobile gamers want games they can play for a couple of minutes while being blasted with sensory inducing pavloavion signals. No one is going to play Smash or Pokemon RPG on their phone.

Clearly Sony doesn't care about Japan. They are sending no consoles there. They had their biggest launch in history but the saddest one in Japan. In a way I can't blame them because you cant survive off Japan with AAA huge budget games.

I agree with the bolded. But I think Sony is taking it too far now with the PS5 and Japan.

Konami is taking advantage of Nintendo Switch holiday season like a champ while Capcom is preparing to enter the scene as well with MH Rise.

SQE, on the other hand, still no news about AAA games on Nintendo Switch.

Currently Square, Bandai, Sega and Level-5 are the one with questionable 2021 line-ups; Square actually has announced a few games for the Switch and I'm expecting something DQ related on the system next year.
I would say Bandai, Sega and Level-5 are the ones that are most at risk at being left behind. Bandai this year had too many AA projects exclusive to the PS4, next year if they don't embrace a multiplat strategy they will further decline - but with the amount of games they release they are bound to find another >500K Switch game in 2021. Sega's is also in a bit of a better position comparing 2020 against 2021 because Atlus is part of the company, and they also have some other decent hits on the system like Sonic & Mario at the Olympics, Puyo Puyo - that maintain some sales outside of the Top 30 long after the exit.

Level-5 are the major concern, as they have struggled and 2020 they basically were non-existent.

2018: 723.946
2019: 338.774
2020: 3.059*

Compared to Level-5 the rest of the Japanese 3rd Parties are looking like geniuses. Someone will have to bail them out somehow, they can't survive on eShop sales at deep discounts forever.

I would say there's a bit of a difference between those companies you highlighted:

Namco: Has plenty of AA content to offer but clearly Harada is no fan of the Switch

Sega: Does have SMT V but apart from that their 2021 lineup is mostly unknown, for Switch or PlayStation (think they have some PC titles announced)

Level 5: A mess with hardly anything to offer any console. They need a new IP to be a hit.

So far Marvelous and Capcom are the biggest supporters of Switch in 2021 (though like you I'm expecting more from SE to be announced).

Yes and so have most Nintendo Handheld systems. Its not like Nintendo is making a new Handheld or doing anything on the 3DS and there's a reason for that

I agree with the bolded. But I think Sony is taking it too far now with the PS5 and Japan.

You can't blame SONY for the Japanese poor taste in games and systems. Long gone are the days when consoles and games could do so well in Japan they didn't need to come to the west. I blame the Japanese love of mobile gaming on why it's developers (bar a few) have lost so much ground to western developers.

Sad to see the sate of the Japanese game industry of late

Sorry I don't understand, are you saying yes the US market is handheld-centric?

Nintendo isn't doing anything with the Wii U either. In fact they stopped Wii U development as soon as the Switch launched, but they continued 3DS development for 2 more years.

They certainly struggled with the move to HD but most Japanese publishers seem to be in a very good state now (with the exception of Level 5, but their demise can hardly be blamed on a Japanese love of mobile gaming.)

I never considered this. Good insight!
I gotta make it clear that I was speculating but I do think it's reasonable to assume there was a hill they had to climb with regards to asset creation during that particular period.

I believe I read this fairly long article on outsourcing back in 2018 so I forgot some stuff but after reading it again, I gotta say the anecdotes around Horizon Zero Dawn are simultaneously impressive and depressing (specifically the earnings).

Two weeks left for the year, seemingly hardware will get fairly close to 2 million this quarter, but with the absence of Pokemon caliber game Software is unlikely to get beyond 5 million. Still, considering Q1 2020 is stacked compared to Q1 2019, momentum will be pretty strong heading into the new year.
Ring Fit as noted is still not being supplied in large enough quantities to meet demand, as Nintendo decided to provide stock elsewhere during the holidays.

I wonder how this will impact 3rd Parties. A lot Publishers went Playstation exclusive but I can’t see that being a viable solution for any of the projects that rely on Japan for a significant amount of sales any time soon.

Cyberpunk for PS4 Is in 2nd place in Japan?

How utterly embarrassing that must be. The Japanese must be thinking 'wtf is wrong is western game makers' after running into all those bugs.

According to Bloomberg report, one major Japanese game developer might delay their game after PS5 hardware sales situation is at abysmal level and not enough userbase to support the game by the time it will be released.

I don't remember number like this in Japan since PS2 domination. A war machine. It prints money indeed.
3DS x Vita.

Wii x Ps360.

Japan is Nintendoland and Sony gave up.

Sony only keeps pushing on Japan, because they know that they need Square, Koei and other japanese studios games to please western fans.

Japan is simply an extra thing over Xbox.

So why isn't Sony releasing more PS5s in Japan right now?

There's no scenario where they don't get dicked to oblivion by the Switch in Japan right now, so it's better to reserve those stocks to other countries where demand could be higher.

Life if PS5 and Switch were equally supplied right now, Switch would still outsell the PS5 in Japan by like 3:1.

Some people didn't understand the situation of Japanese market and used supply constrained as an excuse of why Switch managed to outsell PS5.

Even if Sony supplied enough hardware to satisfy Japanese market demand, it's still not enough to compete against Nintendo in weekly sales.

For example, when PS4 was supply constrained and only able to sell around 7K units in weekly sales and the next week without supply issue the total numbers of PS4 sold customer is around 15K unit. Hardly noticable at all.

Games move hardware.

most boring and irrelevant domination ever
Japan market isn't irrelevant.

To give a perspective of how big the Japanese market vs UK and Germany markets combined for PS4.

Switch Japan sales = 16.7 million units
PS4 UK and Germany sales = 15 million units.

At the end of Switch lifetime sales in Japan, it could potentially reach or outsell PS4 total sales in UK, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy combined.

Japan is very important.

Dear God why is it that no one can say anything slightly negative about Japan or Nintendo? .
Nintendo games always sell well, but long gone are the days when FF would sell over 3 million copies in Japan alone, one look at the Japanese charts show most main games don't even sell past the 300,00 mark and you can top the Japanese charts with less than 80,00 sales in some months. Konami recorded some of their best profits that doesn't mean they're a prolific developer making world class games like they used it. Compared to the 16 bit and 32Bit days Japan and its games market is a shadow of what it used to be.

Capcom are one of the few Japanese corps that can compete with the West for budgets and making world class game engines and AAA games.

Sorry I don't understand, are you saying yes the US market is handheld-centric?

They certainly struggled with the move to HD but most Japanese publishers seem to be in a very good state now (with the exception of Level 5, but their demise can hardly be blamed on a Japanese love of mobile gaming.)

I'm saying that Nintendo always does well with their Handhelds. We all know Nintendo dropped systems like a stone when their new system comes out (unlike what some say). What big AAA HH games came out for the 3DS after the Switch launched In-House from Nintendo?. To me, the Switch is the successor to the 3DS is all but name.
