Jacob Geller: Every Zelda is the Darkest Zelda

The Legend of Zelda[a] is a high fantasy action-adventure video game franchise created by Japanese game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka. It is primarily developed and published by Nintendo, although some portable installments and re-releases have been outsourced to Capcom, Vanpool, and Grezzo. The gameplay incorporates action-adventure and elements of action RPG games.

The series centers on the various incarnations of Link, a courageous young Hylian man, with pointy, elf-like ears; and Princess Zelda, a magical princess that is the mortal reincarnation of the goddess Hylia; as they fight to save the magical land of Hyrule from Ganon, an evil warlord turned demon king, who is the principal antagonist of the series. Ganon wishes to use the Triforce, a sacred relic left behind by the three goddesses that created Hyrule to remake the world in his own dark image. When gathered together, the power of the Triforce can grant any wish its user desires; however, if someone with a heart that does not possess a balance of the three virtues of Power, Courage and Wisdom attempts to touch the Triforce, it will split into three triangles and bond with three people whose hearts embody the required virtue.

Although their personalities and backstory differ from game to game, the incarnations of Link and Zelda often have many traits in common; such as Link often being left-handed and associated with the color green while Princess Zelda is often a member of the royal family. While the conflict with Ganon serves as a backbone for the series, some games have featured other settings and antagonists, with Link traveling or being sent to these other lands in their time of need.

Since the original Legend of Zelda was released in 1986, the series has expanded to include 19 entries on all of Nintendo's major game consoles, as well as a number of spin-offs. An American animated TV series based on the games aired in 1989 and individual manga adaptations commissioned by Nintendo have been produced in Japan since 1997. The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo's most prominent and successful franchises; several of its entries are considered to be among the greatest video games of all time.

yeah im not watching all that but i always thought the beginning of OoT got kinda dark. especially when it starts with an orphan boy who no one likes, and doesnt have a fairy like every other person in his villlage, and they show him all curled up and cold on his bed in the dark

10 year old me was like, damn thats some heavy shit :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I patronize Cane and Rinse since it's a rare, actual deep-dive-into-a-single-video-game-per-episode podcast. This guy was on that team for a year or so. He ended up leaving because one of his YouTube videos had more success and a wider audience than anything Cane and Rinse will ever have.

He always had really thoughtful takes, but I think he suffers from the English major curse of having really intelligent ideas that are ultimately meaningless since there's nothing to be applied from the knowledge gained. The philosopher's dilemma. Mental wank. Case in point: this video. Good to see some things never change.

Who the fuck is Jacob Geller? Not clicking a video from a random person without further context and a statement that doesn't make any sense.

MM is easiest the darkest one. The town could have been named Depression Town and there are so many fucked up characters while and despite the moon coming down. In many other Zeldaa the danger isn't immanent; it seems like you could live there, though pretty dangerous and probably not comfortable and without fear. In MM your life IS gonna end, though.

OoT‘s below the Well and Shadow Temple are dark
Majoras Masks is dark allover
Most other Zelda‘s are not, or at least not comparable to the two above.

Zelda II, Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are either dark at parts or still manage to hold some darkness underneath.

But I agree OoT and MM are the most obvious.

Not since Skyward Sword.

Sub-text used to be a heavy plot device, but is now reduced to easter eggs sneaked in by the team.
?????

Breath of the wild's half of the plot is sub-text and the world telling you a story. Skyward sword has a lot of that too (ancient cistern, lanayru desert etc.) Yeah there are more cutscenes now but the world of Zelda always has those little things that mean something.

It lacks depth. It's just lore now; and it's too in your face, impossible to miss.

Everything that could be misunderstood, or fly past they make a huge point in reinforcing that it is so. So subtext while still subtext becomes less subjective/up to interpretation or little more than an easter egg.

As I stated. If you go back to the old way of doing Zelda histories you'll notice right away that while similar, the newer ones are wooden.

There's a whole fandom of the zonai and a lot of theories about a race that's not even in the game, we just have symbols and a few ruins. Just to give you an example of how wrong I think you are.

There should be a rule against just linking random shit without context or commentary.
Is this your first time seeing almost anything posted by the OP? Posting videos without any other context *IS* pretty much his main mode of operation 😂

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Zelda dark moments are sneaky (shadow temple, Majoras mask etc.) the purpose of Zelda is too save the princess.
