Introducing the next generation of VR on PlayStation

More than four years ago, we launched PlayStation VR to offer a transformative new way to play games on PS4, providing a much stronger sense of presence and deeper immersion to players compared with traditional games. In that time, we’ve seen tremendous experiences that have propelled virtual reality gaming forward, including highly acclaimed titles like Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Tetris Effect, Blood & Truth, Moss, Beat Saber, and Resident Evil 7 biohazard. We’ve also enhanced the experience for some PS VR titles when played on PS4 Pro and PlayStation 5.

Today I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity. Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.

We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation. We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.

One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.

There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021. But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality.

We also want to thank all of our PS VR players for your continued support — with upcoming games like After The Fall, Sniper Elite VR, and Humanity, there’s much more to come for PS VR whether you’re playing on PS4 or PS5. With both PlayStation VR and the next-generation VR system we’re building, our commitment to virtual reality as a medium for games is stronger than ever. We look forward to sharing more details in the future!

The blog only meant to tell you that there will be a psvr2.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
I'll being paying attention but Quest has made it hard for me to look at any other VR solution long term. PSVR was priced great for what it was but it was very quickly eclipsed tech wise. I hope PSVR2 is more future looking. Inside out tracking better be there.

Flashless at the Golden Globes
Was hoping for wireless and some truly out there fancy eye tech but this seems to be an iteration not a revolution so whatever.

The problem with vr is that the headset is still too bulky and eye strain and nausea is still really bad. They need to sort that shit out. But other than that i have no doubt that vr will be the future. Maybe it takes a $3,000 box from apple to get us there but i dont see it being done with a $399 mainstream console.

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
Nice. Guess I'll be holding out for this too. PSVR is amazing, and I gave mine to a family member. Was gonna get another one, but I'll wait for this. So now I can nope out of RE7 main menu with even more immersion.....great.... I still cant get over my entire room turning into the game. Christ...

Anyone that still have 3D movies, PSVR works for that, if you didnt know.
I'd really have hoped for a wireless option. A shame if they can't provide that.

Still glad that Sony continues to invest in VR though. It needs time and investment to continue to evolve, the Quest is nothing short of mind-blowing with the right software.

A shame it's not wireless, but that was to be expected I guess.

Hard to go back to wires after using the Oculus Quest, but if they have a new Astro Bot VR I won't be able to resist.

Glad to see Sony finally say something about the future of psvr. While it having to be wired is a little disappointing it’s not a deal breaker for me at all. Looking forward to hearing more about it in the future.

Fuck all the haters that keep trying to say VR is dead... for some pathetic reason (because they don’t like it? Lol who tf knows). It’s only the beginning! Super hyped for PS5 VR and will absolutely buy a PlayStation over an Xbox, unless Xbox comes out with a headset.

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
I'll take one wire over the absolute clusterfuck that was the original PS VR connection at least.

That headset was by far the best for glasses users, I hope they keep that title.

Sounds great. I'm excited for it. Can a single USBC provide enough bandwidth and power to do this? Or can we use it's specs to guess approximate performance?

I don't care much for VR, but if they can pull something off with Gran Turismo 7 and next-gen VR that might pull me in.

As someone who got the PSVR a few months ago and has loved it, this is great news. I'm excited to see what's in store and even a single cable will be a huge step up over the current headset.

I seem to remember a bunch of people saying the next PSVR headset was the reason for the WiFi6 inclusion in the PS5. Ah well. That said, I have no doubt it'll be a great piece of hardware for those who enjoy VR.

Wireless might still be released as an add on down the line. I think they are wise to not include it in the base package, in regards to price.

An interesting thing about this interview with Jim ryan is that dev kits for the PS5 VR headset haven't even shiped.
Seeing how some people here talked about how PS5 VR was going to be I expected those to be already out.

Glad it's happening. I'm especially excited to see the new VR controller. The PS Moves were always kind of a lame stand-in without a joystick.

I never expected it to come this year, so that doesn't disappoint me. In fact, I'm surprised they announced it so early.

Bummer that it isn't wireless, but you can't have everything. Maybe next gen.

less than zero details on the hardware but I am glad to know it's happening. Then again it's not like I can even find a PS5 to purchase so...lolol

Will be interesting to put this against the quest (Which will be on a 3rd model at least by the time this comes to market). PSVR was a really good traditional VR experience, but standalone units seem like the future.
