India Moon mission lander Vikram aims for lunar south pole landing

India is hoping to make history on Wednesday by becoming the first nation to land near the Moon's south pole.
One of the mission's major goals is to hunt for water-based ice, which scientists say could support human habitation on the Moon in future.
If Chandrayaan-3 is successful, India will be only the fourth country to have achieved a soft landing on the Moon.
India's attempt comes just days after Russia's Luna-25 crashed while trying to touch down in the same region.
The south pole of the Moon holds special promise in the search for water ice. The surface area that remains in permanent shadow there is huge, and scientists say it means there is a possibility of water in these areas.

Just over 30minutes at time of writing..

If they manage to succeed, it will be a great victory for India.
Especially considering the failure of the Russian craft a few days ago.

Chandrayaan-3’s lander touches down on the lunar surface, making India the first country to successfully land a spacecraft near the Moon’s south pole.

All previous missions to the Moon have touched down near the equator - but exploring the south pole is key to the hunt for water.

Scientists now hope to deploy a rover to send images and data back to Earth

Is it just me that thinks sort your country out first before going to the moon?

Perhaps help the millions in poverty, the ones with missing limbs that crawl along busy roads in New Delhi and countless other cities?
I mean, you could say the same thing about the rest of the world, in an ideal world I suppose we should stop the advancement of human kind and sort all our shit out first, doesn't work that way though. (Russia is in the middle of a war, sorry, special military operation, and they managed to find time to crash a lander on the moon)

Both sets of objectives and efforts can coexist.

It's incredible but also put things into perspective that 54 years after the first moon landing that this is still a momenutal task for humanity.

54 years before the moon landing most everyone was using a horse a buggy still with a few cars sprinkled about.

There's always this type of concern trolling when this happens. Creating high tech high paying jobs in the country IS a way to raise it up, isn't it? And do you even know how much poverty in India has fallen over the last few years?

Abject poverty is even more through the floor. This isn't the India of the 90s. Yeah it has problems but if all it did was feed the poor and not invest in high tech programs like this, nothing would change, and the poverty rate would have stayed flat.

Not trolling, genuine question.

And clearly it's not exclusively India, plenty of other countries where there are questions over where resources should be allocated, it's just this thread is India specific.

Again though, if all you did was feed the poor, there would never be less poor

India raised half a billion people out of poverty in recent years, and keeping high tech jobs in the country is a good way to raise the average salary, keep a bunch of big brains running around in the country which benefits everyone, etc

Does this mean it is easier to get to the moon than clean up the Ganges?
It is a kick ass accomplishment for sure.

What exactly is your point? No innovation or research until poverty is solved?

Unfortunately, even the most prosperous countries have poverty. It's not really something money can fix.
And they're completely different fields anyway. It's not like you're gonna ask your whole space department to go help the economy.

No, no, no, I think what they are trying to say is too much money is spent on technology so sack all those people and then share out their earnings to the... people who.. dont... have.... jobs.... ah, I see the problem there

Sounds like socialism to me and you know how that usually works out lol

The mission has already discovered some new information about the south pole, including that the temperature variation with depth and the insulating properties of the lunar regolith that are both positive for building habitation structures there.
