id Software's Marty Stratton "Stunned" By DOOM Eternal Switch Port, Thinks People Are Going To "Love It"

"masters of the platform, and they're proving it again"

As we all know, DOOM Eternal on the Switch will not be launched on 20th March alongside the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC version. The port specialist at Panic Button needs more time to refine it and id Software's Marty Statton has reassured DOOM fans waiting for the game to arrive on this particular platform that it won't be a "huge" delay.

Now, speaking to US Gamer at PAX East this weekend, Stratton says the port is progressing at a steady pace and while a release date hasn't been discussed yet, he did say how he was "stunned" when he tried it out a week ago:
We really haven't talked about dates or anything—I can say that I played it about a week ago, and I am stunned. Our partner on that, Panic Button, I've referred to them many times as masters of the platform, and they're proving it again. I really think it's gonna surprise people[...] I see it all the time in the comments, when we release a video: 'Can't wait to play it on Switch, can't wait to play it on Switch.' I think people are going to love it.
Statton reiterated his comments from the previous month, saying how the development team "want to do the right job with it" in order for it to be the "highest quality" possible. Visuals and performance aren't the only focus, either – with Panic Button calling on "a whole team of UI artists" to ensure the game works on the small screen;
Menus, UI, the dossier—a lot of adjustments across the board to make sure that, again, it is the best possible version you can get on the Switch.
How do you feel about having to wait longer for the release of DOOM Eternal on Switch? Do you think it'll be worth the wait?

Hopefully it's no worse than the last port, but the game's much more demanding so it will be interesting to see how they tried to fit it on Switch. Perhaps levels will have even more differences with smaller areas and more additional geometry to occlude things further ahead a la New Colossus?

The Doom (2016) on Switch is a horrible, blurry mess which runs and looks like absolute shit.

I don't understand how people can play it this way, it's so blurry it feels like your eyes are constantly tired or
you vision is rapidly degrading, and then you try to focus your eyes, but you can't, because the eyes are just fine,
but the game is displayed through a heavy smudge, blur filter.

It's by far the worst version on Doom, and on top of it costs significantly more than on any other platform.
On PC it's on sale for 6euros regularly.

When my friends and I went on a trip, we could take a Switch and dock with us to play in our hotel room. Couldn’t have done that with a PS4/Xbox, let alone a PC.

I prefer higher settings myself, but Switch will do in a pinch and portable with compromises beats top settings that you can’t take with you every time.

tl;dr: it’s nice to have options.

Yeah but I have to spend a lot to actually buy a pc then configure it. Plus I can’t play on the go.
I know you are PC master race and all that but let us Nintendo plebs enjoy ourselves.

:lollipop_alien2:
I don't know why anyone would buy this version. People are consistently "stunned" at the things they are able to put on it, but they are always the worst version of that game. Not every game needs to be on Switch.

No but if they can make it and get some extra sales why not ?

As gorgeous as the first was on switch, it ran at a much lower resolution.

I would bet good money on the new doom running much higher resolution, maybe even native, while still being stunning.

Would there ever be an article title "id Software's Marty Stratton "DISAPPOINTED" BY Doom Eternal Switch port. Thinks people are going to "hate it"."?

Honest question - those of you with a switch, do you also have a pro controller?

Because the joycons are essentially useless for me, and even in portable mode I have to use the pro controller.

I may look at those hori controllers that are large and stick on the side? But no, even using the joycons in their holder, it’s utter dreadful for pretty much anything.

It's good to have as many people as possible playing the game.
How else would brap brap play this if it weren't on the switch?

Lots of people ITT complaining about something that doesn’t affect them at all. You’ve just got to love it.

Buy it on PS4, buy it on Xbone, buy it on PC.
Let the Switch owners have their game and if it turns out to be a good port, good for them, I guess. It’s interesting what they can do given the Switch’s lack of power compared to the big boys, where they’ll make compromises and how it’ll hold up in the end. The DF comparison will be worth the wait.

I’m just going to go into the Android thread and compare their phones to a toaster and let them all know how useless and stupid they are for even considering an Android in the first place . 😂😂😂 idiots. Really the sort of things that gets me going on a Sunday morning. I have stuff to do, but letting other people enjoy things without telling them how wrong they are is just something I can’t let happen.

Lol, people only remember fps/res matters when it's a system they don't like, all those other barely -30fps sub-HD games, racing, fps, whatever, on the console they fanboy over, perfectly fine, they're not Doom, they're not as fast, whatever bs, the threshold for "shit" is always just beneath your own.

Of course anything higher than your shit, like PC or whatever, or an even better version, is just overpriced unneeded luxury cos your shit is just about good enough too. Wonderful how lucky you were that what you fanboy over is just exactly the sweet spot, anything worse and anything better, nope.

Whats stunning about porting a game with less visual stuff and worse perfomance than the original? Since when blurry fest is pretty?

Oh yeah, because people want "portability to play the game in their bathroom".

That's describing every console ever, lol, back in the day with arcade ports, since then with pc ports, etc. Funny how you didn't think it's a problem with Vita either. Again, must be a case of "my fanboy passion is just the sweet spot, worse is shit, better doesn't matter at all". Get that checked :)

A developer happy to see the switch port going well...

I would be happy for porting things that would seem impossible at first look. And who wouldn't? Its an impressive feat. But I don't think it makes the port any better.

What a shit comparison. You can get a xbox one for 100-150$ that gives much better performance and graphics then switch. Plus much cheaper games then switch.a PC would run 600$-700$ to get that advantage over ps4 so the comparisons makes no sense.

The negativity here almost made me
Check if I accidentally went to resetera.
Everything does not need to be positive, if it isn't. No need to be hypocritical. That's ERA-type shit.

Haha, accusations of being just like ResetEra are fast becoming GAF's very own Goodwin's Law - whatever the topic, the longer it goes on the greater the chance that one of the people involved will accuse the other person of being "like Era" :messenger_tears_of_joy: (I'm guilty of it too!)

Well no one was really complaining about a 3ds or Vita version of a game looking the worst. 🤷‍♂️

It's not about how it looks.

I've never really heard anyone hype up portability or playing on the go back then. People were happy to just play games without evangelising their console of choice.

Now you keep hearing about how great portability and playing on the go is.

It'll be great if everyone can recognise their console of choice's strengths and weakness, and just shut up and play their games without being like an annoying salesman or evangelist.

sorry but the Switch version of Doom 2016 is absolute crap.

they shouldn't try to keep the game as it is, cramming onto the Switch with force.
they should drastically adjust the whole graphics setup. replace effects that are very GPU heavy with more simple stuff instead of just using lower settings.

for the Switch version they should have completely separate 3D models, completely separate textures and completely separate effects and not try to look like the damn PC version.

I feel like back in the day ports to lower end machines were handled with more care to actually suit the machine.

look at what Ubisoft did with SplinterCell 2 and 3 on PS2, they didn't just take the Xbox version and lowered the settings, the PS2 versions had redesigned levels to fit the lower RAM configuration, they completely changed the lighting effects and textures in SC3 aswell as the level design and models in order to have a PS2 version that runs well and doesn't feel like a PC game was crammed onto the PS2 with force that barely even runs on it.

Doom 2016 on switch felt like someone softmodded the Switch, got it to boot Windows and barely got it to run on the lowest PC settings without crashing.

I know that's not what they did, they did adjust it further, but that's what it feels like and that's not good and should not be applauded IMO

Good luck finding one that can run Doom 2016 well for $200.
As if Switch can run Doom 2016 well, it can't. It's blurry as hell 576p at 20-30fps, all the way down 360p in handheld mode. Even docked it's sub 720p at 20-30fps. And that's 300eur for regular dockable Switch.
That's not cheap for how blurry it is and how choppy the framerate is for this game.

Also consider how the regular price for the game on Switch is 60euro, on sale 30. On PC - regular price 20eur, sale 6eur.

You don't have to spend a lot to buy a PC which can play Doom(2016) at 60fps at 1080p.
Almost any 8-10 year old PC with a dedicated GPU can easily play Doom at 60fps at 1080p. Doom is a very well optimized game and it will run on almost anything. It runs amazingly on very old PCs with very old CPUs and pretty weak GPUs.

Shitty laptop GPUs even mx150, or 1050 (nonTI) easily run 1080p/60fps high/ultra Doom.

I love my switch but I don't remember people hyping up portability as much during the 3ds/psp/vita days.
They do with P3P and P4G.

Also the port is okay and perfectly serviceable especially with gyro aiming, and again what's stopping you people from not giving a shit about the port, about what others buying? Got scared PC release getting sidetracked? NO.

Salty manbabies.

I bought a Laptop like 3 or 4 years ago, that runs an i3 at 1.7ghz and a Geforce 820m
that laptop cost 500€ and has a touchscreen (which added a lot to the price)

that laptop that is now not only old but was pretty cheap even back when I bought it, can run Doom 2016 at roughly the same settings and resolution as the Switch, and it does so at slightly higher framerates.

it's fun to see what low end crappy PCs can do, it's not fun playing a game like that tho.

Technically you could use vita tv version (or laptop/phone etc) to stream the game from home console, it would at least look better.

I have played ps4 games from trips with vita, pc and phone with 20/5 3G so good wifi would work even better. Input lag is there but not too bad

As always, it is not advisable to use the Switch on the go, game streaming is always better. Switch sucks.

Because they were(at least vita) still playable and cheaper. Also switch claims to be home console too so it is fair to complain if it doesnt deliver.

About portability: who even really needs it? I see max 1-2x year portable consoles outside/transportation/anywhere.

So people just play em at home or maybe at hotels?

If they would be as popular outside of home as people claim, I would assume that I would spot one at least once a month.

If switch would run all games at 720p/30 with medium details then it would be a different story

My problem with the Switch port is that they went more for a tech demo approach of “see that Switch can run modern graphics engines eh?” rather than play exclusively to the HW strengths and weaknesses. Doom 2016 was built around fast paced 60 FPS gameplay... the jump to unstable 30 FPS was not the best choice gameplay wise.
