I really want Square Enix to announce Final Fantasy XVI with a CGI trailer! It should feel like this big event a la' the PS3/Xbox 360 era

I am very happy for Final Fantasy VII fans who were able to finally get their hands on the long-awaited remake of the monumental PS1 classic for the PS4. And there's no doubt in my mind one of Square Enix's division teams are currently hard at work developing Part 2. I also understand that, following the remake's release, there are those who are interested in seeing other older Final Fantasy games get the full remake treatment though I personally disagree with the idea they should only focus on remakes. I believe new mainline entries like Final Fantasy XVI are just as important, if not more than another remake.

Despite what you may think of the Final Fantasy series in its current state, the fact is it changes with each new entry bringing us new worlds, characters, stories, music, gameplay etc. That said, there's a part of me that wonders if Final Fantasy XVI might end up being directed by Hiroyuki Ito (who previously directed Final Fantasy VI, IX and XII) but this probably won't end up happening. In any case, I want to see what the next chapter of Final Fantasy looks like. Most likely the game won't be ready to launch for another three to five years but that doesn't mean they can't continue to release new trailers for the game until then.

I'm not the biggest Final Fantasy fan these days and maybe it's just the nostalgia getting to me but surely I'm not alone in wishing they announce Final Fantasy XVI.

Wasn't FFXV released in 2016, which is mainline entry if I'm not mistaken. Not exactly two console generations since the last mainline entry.

The last great E3 was 2009 🥳. A good XIII reveal followed by an unexpected XIV announcement really swept us away. But we’re asking for something that’s already tradition in regard to the CGI trailer reveal (exactly how 13 rolled out between 2006-2008).

I guess I'm worried about the idea they might wait until after Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 is released to announce Final Fantasy XVI which would be quite a while.

i hope new blood directed XVI.
I believe that the franchise need.
Fresh start with new generation of developers.

Assuming yasumi matsuno wont return and Hiroyuki Ito still bussy mopping floor as janitor. Those 2 guy not directed AAA games in years in modern era so it still risky.this time both nomura, kitase, toriyama are bussy with VIIR so they wont have a hand on it. highly chances it was handled by creative bussiness 3 under naoki yoshida.

personally i hope he directed the game, but im fine if he end up as producer, assuming we can trust his response before about the rumors of he directing the game. He has really good track record of managing tight scheduled development with XIV and i believe him as man of vision. He before said that square should made game with caliber of GoW as example and he know what should be done based on his insight on noclip documentary of FFXIV. He highlighted and see clearly problem within square enix management and didnt scare to look at other games or competitor as references. He even ask his team to look and play other game. I trust this guy to do a justice for the franchise.

if rumors are true that either kazutoyo maehiro or hiroshi takai handled it, im all in. it will be kick start of new generation of FF under new leadership. those guy already proven themself with Heavensward especially Maehiro which is involved with almost all of ivalice related games including tactics. He been battle designer for XII, writer for A Realm Reborn and Heavensward and varios position from other game. He also influenced alot by Yasumi Matsuno's writing.

either way as much i like visual works but i rather gameplay trailer than only cgi. i still dont fully trust square until i see gameplay footage lol.

The FF7R series should act as the more reliable set of games, while FF16 should provide something fresh looking and more experimental. I agree that either Ito or a new director needs to take the helm this time, while the veteran Kitase/Nomura crew focuses on FF7R.

All in all, Final Fantasy is in an interesting spot right now since FFXV went open-world while FF7R went the exact opposite route. I would guess that FF16 does something in between and with more of a fantasy setting, but we'll see.

What you want, what you really really want is a CGI trailer?

Personally, I prefer full CGI trailer for a reveal rather than a gameplay trailer.
Having 2 separate trailers is the also nice.

Some are really memorable (like Assassin's Creed Revelations) and make me really hyped.
But I agree they can be totally misleading to what the final game can be (like Dark Souls 2... still the trailer remains good ;))

Gameplay trailers are usually less "impactful" and memorable for me.

I'd rather see gameplay so that I know if they are going to use Corridor Engine 4 or their in-house engine instead, which would make for a much more interesting game.

Does it need to be CGI to be a big event?

I can't possibly be the only one who just wants to see a new game revealed by showing some real-time gameplay and not some elaborate fake display of what you're going to actually be doing in the game. Square Enix has a rich history of impressive CGI, but FF16 will be a game. Not a movie, not a TV show; a game.

Maybe I'm reading too much into one part of your FF16 wish, but why would you want the first big reveal of the next mainline FF to not show you how the game actually looks and plays?

I want a flashy cgi trailer that blows our minds, then at the very end of it "captured on PlayStation 5/Xbox" is written on screen, just to fuck with our minds.

I want Final Fantasy XVI to be similar in concept to a single-player version of Final Fantasy XIV, massive open world and the ability to fully customize your character race, sex, and class. Something like a JRPG version of Skyrim or Dragon Age to use another example.

Releasing CGI trailers in the current gaming climate would be nostalgic, but also a bit suicidal. Gamers HATE CGI trailers (just look at the rage MS is getting), and we're at a point now where you can use in-engine footage to make visually stunning scenes. That wasn't the case during PS1 and PS2 days (hell, even PS3). If they announce FFXVI, then it better be a gameplay trailer.

I'm confused... Haven't they already announced FF16 with a cgi trailer?

I hear you and I think you're right on the fact People don't like CGI nowadays.
But at the same time, I understand that they don't want release too much of gameplay or in-engine trailer since some people will be so happy to claim for "downgraded graphics" at launch.
Overall I find the industry (developers and gamers) too obsessed with visuals and others technical stuff.
I always liked videogames because they make me dream. They bring me into others world in which I like to wander. And it doesn't need to be photorealistic to achieve that.

I wish the focus would be more on atmosphere, art design, world building and gameplay rather than visuals.

I'm confused... Haven't they already announced FF16 with a cgi trailer?

Edit: this one

It's an April's Fool (end of video and description). Don't know if it's from Square themself or someone else.
(EDIT : haven't check it yet but it looks pretty cool)

It's going to be quite a while either way. That's just how SE does things. Six years is my guess.

I'd like to see them blow us away the a CGI trailers and then have FFXVI be a SNES-style game. All pixel graphics and a job system for characters.

I hope so too. They're important for setting the atmosphere and "feel" of the game that isn't easily communicated with gameplay footage.

That said, there's a part of me that wonders if Final Fantasy XVI might end up being directed by Hiroyuki Ito (who previously directed Final Fantasy VI, IX and XII) but this probably won't end up happening.

XII is my favorite, and I really like IX. They both have more of a fantasy feel than most of the others I have played. I haven't played VI, but I assume it must be similar. I really hope XVI moves in this direction.

No CGI, stop with that. If it's a promotional teaser to show the concept and ideas for the game then all good, but we have grown out of the CGI trailers. I think big announcements should be made with in-game or at least in-engine graphics. Pure CGI tells nothing about the game most of the time, especially when the CGI trailers are mostly of the time outsourced to CGI companies who have nothing to do with the game.

Just to give you an example, I have no confidence in State of Decay 3 being nothing like its CGI teaser.

I want them to make a complete FF main series game again.

I love XIII, but it was a mess.

XV is almost broken and also a mess.

I just hope that they can release a good traditional new main FF... XII was launched in 2006... Even though I didn't like it, it was a complete game.... And these days that's all I can hope from S-E.

It would be interesting to compare the CGI footage in early trailers to the in-engine/real-time footage in later trailers. Game graphics are very highly detailed nowadays with physical based rendering, real-time hair physics, seeing light reflected in a character's eyes etc.

I'm confused... Haven't they already announced FF16 with a cgi trailer?

Edit: this one

No, that's just footage from their animation studio with some fake logos added at the end.

Here is the original:

Its going to be real time action combat, right?
I made peace with the fact that we might never get new mainline FF games with turned based combat.

Hopefully I still have, DQ, Bravely, Octopath and SMT/Persona for that.

All ask from FF is if they are going for action combat then give me proper one. Less like FXV and more like FVIIR.

Square is notorious for announcing games way too far in advance. No reason they shouldn't just wait IMO. CGI trailers is all any studio does now and would not stand out in any positive way.

CGI, eh? Interesting take.

I don't really associate that with PS3-era Square games, but I get kind what the OP is wanting to have as an impact event for Final Fantasy XVI (and I had that feeling when Project Athia debuted that, while the gameplay and graphics looked really nice, I had no emotional connection to it and even now forget that the thing exists sometimes.) A thematic trailer that just presents the world and the characters and goes all out like I remember the Final Fantasy VII, XII, and Versus trailers did (and others; Square used to go too much in the opposite direction and sometimes not show any gameplay in its trailers, just all CG/cutscenes.,) if the inevitable XVI was a sequence cut even specifically for that trailer and not even in the game, I think I could be down with that.

However, I would want gameplay videos to follow immediately, preferably even part of the same unveiling event. FF is known for its theatrics, but I'm buying games for the gameplay.

I hope once they announce the next FF they do so with a gameplay trailer.
CGI + modern square means "It will release in the next 4-10 years....maybe".

Then again the "in game" XV announcement trailer was almost entirely bullshit.

So it's not like it was any more representative of the actual game than a CGI one.

keep hoping - we haven't had any new main line original ff content in over a decade, since ff13 / versus 13 was announced. triple dose of cialis couldn't even help me get excited for SE.

this what i hope too. One of reason why i been looking foward for naoki yoshida division handled the game. those rumors on reddit and 4chan also said same things but we can take it only as grain of salt. The formula they been searching for is already there. This could be their own 'skyrim' that square want for long time. If the capcom designer that used to work with dmcv and dragons dogma Ryota Suzuki is involved, im fine even if the game somehow end up like Dragons Dogma. Open world, various job, A.I party etc but with better story and quest ofcourse.

Over Hyped for years and years did it really spark anything, not really. No one is saying, god i have to play this or i wish there were more like this except for the same people who wanted the game. Thats cool you got it but dont try to make it as the next big thing.
