I feel like the Xbox Series S is a waste of time & I don't understand why Microsoft made such a console like the Series S.

Odd that the tech expert uses BVH trees as an example of why he needs more RAM - when it's a relatively tiny additional memory cost, and could(/should) be a zero additional memory cost since standard rasterization scene graph already should be in a BVH tree ..

Not saying it 100% has enough RAM. just saying I find his reasoning example odd.
That was one example that came to his mind as they are probably in the id tech 7 RT research and development phase. Not sure the BVH used for RT would match the scene representation exactly and a simpler (not all objects for example) structure could be used on top of how the engine is representing the game scene... not the first case where you may trade off memory for speed.

The big deal breaker for me is that (unless I’m mistaken) it doesn’t even use the 1X upgrades for XB1 games. Like...why? How does that make any sense?

Denying the necessity for Series S is one thing, I can understand where that is coming from, but these posts trying to downplay the value of Game Pass always puzzle me.

It's an amazing service, IMO.
It’s always like that, the same arguments every thread again and again. But GP is basically reason enough to get a Series S if you can’t access it otherwise.

False. I'm far too honest for that. What I said wasn't meant to be a fabrication or spin cycle in any way. If you don't have the money, you don't need to be spending the money.

Beats your options for Series X/PS5
I'm sure you're aware that the XSX and PS5 will be snagged by enthusiasts first. XSS again is not for the hardcore gamer wanting the best performance. Those people will buy systems way more casually so we won't be able to tell how good of a gamble the XSS is for quite a while. The good thing is that MS is trying to expand the market and that is good for the industry. Pretty sure the XSS will hit $200 way before the XSX or PS5 and that mass market price will put it into impulse buy territory.

but pc gaming has many many options...that seems to work fine and nobody moans?
Does it though?

How many people gaming on the PC have underpowered PCs? How many games (e.g. Batman Arkham, GTA5, RDR2, etc) support underpowered PCs? How far does it scale down? What is the level of support like from one game to the next? How many people are actually gaming on PCs compared to consoles that don't have a good gaming PC?

If you happen to be on a PC that isn't designed for gaming or isn't the most up-to-date then you lose out on many games by default. I know games have scaling options to match hardware but my experience in the past with PC gaming on computers that weren't up to par wasn't exactly good -- the game just didn't work or looked/played like crap.

Answer, almost everyone. Top end cards sell meager numbers and always have (typically less than a million units of anything with a MSRP of greater than $350).

That's what I figured so the number of options people have when looking to game on a PC is going to be a lot smaller. I mean, I have a pretty decent system right now but I can't max out many of the games and some are jittery when playing but still manageable; anyone with something lower than what I got or most of the defaults that you can buy on the market, I think their options are going to be even smaller.

So the number of options people actually have on the PC isn't really a lot and I would say isn't exactly easy to navigate through. I still don't know if it validates the existence of the Series S due to the different variables we have on PC but just goes to show why consoles exist. Luckily though, I guess we only have Seres S & X and don't have to worry about Series P, E, F, G etc etc.

Yeah...no. It’s 3x the minimum wage, it’s expensive as fuck. People will flock to the Series X as they are doing everywhere. Series S will be dead in 3 years time.
No way, dude.
People living on the minimum wage are probably still rocking the PS2 with pirate games as we all did many years ago.
The truth is many people buy what is cheaper, and guess which next-gen console can be bought by the same price as a PS4, unlike the PS5/Series X that cost double of that?

The Series S is not made for you or anyone on this forum. Its made for people that:

- Only play FIFA/Madden/2k/Fortnite/COD every year and thats it
- A gamepass machine
- A secondary console

It should never be anyone's primary console if you are a gamer

People need to stop giving this notion. It’s clearly not true.
I know for a fact that if all you play is cod and or fifa every year, you would be fucking clowned for buying such a low tier piece of shit console like the seriesS by your other “dude bros”.

dudebros either by a series x or ps5.

You’re right, but I was referring to people that are moving to the new generation of consoles.

im curious what happened when Nintendo release a console that can compete with performance and price of XSS. instead of planning to 'sandwiching' ps5 from low and above tier, it might invited another uninvited indirect competitor.

currently digital ps5 is close competitor to it and i wonder what happened when sony release digital slim version of it with lower price in future.
ps4 slim 500gb launch at $299 for example. that one with disc.

This thing is so bad, no one wants it ,in fact amazon uk had them all day yesterday, and still instock now lol https://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-Serie...1-1514&replacementKeywords=xbox+series&sr=8-1
But its expected that at launch the most expensive will be the one more people buy, because its all the enthusiast and tech savvy people that are following and know they are going to buy the more expensive model. I bet the something happens with graphic cards and anything tech related. The most expensive model always sells first.

The S has constantly sold out in most places. Live with it. It takes longer to sell as the scalpers have backed off due to the casuals not paying more than retail, and the fact that casual buyers don't repeatedly check Amazon for stock every day.

The console is not for me and probably not for many here. However, if someone buys it and is happy with it how is that a problem? Forget the idea that "it is holding back next gen" because so far last gen is holding back new gen. This console was created for one reason and one reason only. Game Pass. If someone wants to spend $300 for a Game Pass machine let them. Just educate them on what they are buying.

Its RAM is too shitty to run them. So it can only do base One games.

And people thought it'd do everything the XSX does but at 1440p instead :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Ps. Still in stock lol

They are selling out so you are wrong. Not everyone wants to have the best, some just want access to the games and would prefer the cheaper option. I'd never buy one, but I'd never buy the XSX either because I can get those games on my PC. Does that mean the whole console is a waste? Of course not. It has a place and that shouldn't bother you.

This is kind of disappointing because the thing can do better. Gears 5 is one of the best looking X1X games and its flat out superior on the S. It loads much quicker, but also holds a rock solid framerate in the most intense encounters. On top of that there is 120hz in multiplayer. Both versions mostly target 1440p too so thats not it.

Forza Horizon 4 is locked to the 60fps mode on the S (which would be the only mode I would play, anyway) and its better than the X1X as well with again greatly reduced load times. Skyrim with the mod holds a consistent 60fps, topping the XSX version even, albeit at a lower resolution.

Series S makes sense if you assume that next-gen is gonna be completely, overwhelmingly jam-packed with next-gen-only games. Cheap way to access all those games.

But so far this gen is playing out in the opposite way: the next-gen boxes are mostly just really really nice players for your existing Ps4 / X1 libraries.

The problem the Series S is having is that it seems to lack it's own identity. Sure it's an XBOX but much like it's bigger, without any compelling software to show case the console to it's full potential...

And as for "It's sold out so it's doing well" crowd. That's not the case here in Europe and hasn't been since the console launched.

2 months into the gen man. You think there are going to be tons of X1 and PS4 from here on out? Plus XSS already showing significant performance improvements over last gen with games like Cyberpunk 2077.

This generation just started and games will continue to support older consoles through 2021 just like the previous generation. However, we will see last generation consoles drop in 2022 going by history and xbox series s could be around 200 dollars at that time. Perfect for casual gamers or those who don't care about 4k gaming.

I'm not expecting a ton of games at launch, but looking into 2021 (plus all the delays) is not promising.

Yes, I expect there will be tons of X1 and PS4 (and Switch) games from here on out, at least for the next few years. Switch will ensure a healthy low- and mid-tier gaming market. This market is least likely to jump straight to next gen.

Plus XSS already showing significant performance improvements over last gen with games like Cyberpunk 2077.
I have no objections to the technical improvements for last-gen games.

I remember similar promises / predictions for the Xbox One / base PS4.

To be fair, the base xbox one and ps4 shouldn't even had cyber punk in the first place going by how it "runs".

Are you talking about price or games? For price, it did came down after a couple years while launching at 400/500 dollar price tag. Video games started to be ps4/xbox one exclusive in 2015 such as Fallout 4, Batman Arkham Knight, Halo 5, Bloodborne, Rainbow six siege and more.

Currently available from amazon.es , amazon.fr, and amazon.co.uk .. Not available at amazon.de (or usa)

Series X is sold out on all.
That is pretty good considering the console isn't targeted by scalpers / hardcore gamers and doing well in North America which is the biggest region for consoles sales (almost 50%).

Also, if what the OP says is true, Nintendo needs to get out of the hardware business, immediately. Idc how many S(B)itches they sell, the machine itself is hot trash.

Everyone knows that Xbox is a US brand, and has never done that well in Europe (outside of the UK, and UK support has softened over the last generation as well). If you want to use sales as a barometer of interest, the US is the only market that matters for Xbox. Both boxes are selling every unit stocked in minutes. I know this because I've been trying to snag one and can't. LOL

The fate of the Series S will be decided when the next-gen only games arrive. How well does the system hold up, what are the differences, etc.

I had the option to get the Series S from Best Buy not long ago. I haven't been able to find the Series X or PS5 in stock in any way or form but the Series S actually showed as available and just checked again and still shows as available. 🤷‍♂️

its great for me, i bought my 10 year old son one for his mom's house.

I'll get a Series X over here, but he can play his games when he comes to my house. 1080p is fine for him on a 24" monitor.

Wtf u talking about, the switch is most powerful handheld system out there right now. Plus they dont have a more powerful switch, it not comparable. Xss is just bad value, end of
Xbox series s is the most powerful gaming hardware that you can get for 300 dollars and will continue to get all of the new games for the next 6 years unlike the switch. Hell, the switch 2 will probably not get all the new games as well since it will probably be as powerful as the ps4 pro.

Again another garbage take on this.

I lucked out and found an XSX shortly after launch but just looking now and there are no XSS in stock anywhere around me (USA). My kids all have Xbox Ones and when the time comes for them to upgrade (once enough games go next-gen only so probably at least 2 years down the road) they will get an XSS. Glad that XSS are an option since their displays are 1080p and there's no need for XSX for them.

I own a Series X and a Series S. The Series X is in my gaming room (the basement) and the Series S is in the living room for the family to play on. I LOVE my series S. The games look good and run good. The difference between 1080p and 4K from a visual standpoint is nowhere near as big as the horsepower required to run it. I love it's size, noise and the Microsoft white looks so good.

If I didn't have the extra money to spend I honestly could be perfectly happy with a Series S and Gamepass. Heck with Microsoft rewards and GamePass quests I can pay for GamePass (or use the money to buy 3rd party games that are not on GamePass) by simply doing the reward program. Think about that for a sec. You can buy a Series S for $299 and never have to spend another dollar again the entire generation (if you do the rewards and use that to pay for GamePass) and have plenty of great games to play.

I love the mental gymnastics people play to try and change Switch into its own category as if its not in the same market as Sony and Microsoft.
