I Bought a New Xbox 360 in 2021

Your sealed 360 cost more than a Series S and Series X I’m assuming. Which would play the majority of your 360 games in native 1440p/4k. What a fucking bizarre decision.
Not really, considering the controller is better on 360, and not every game is supported on one x. Plus forced v sync means higher latency and you have to download everything. The 2nd and last actually good M$ console.

I mean, it kinda depends how much he paid, but I bought a sealed gears 3 360 s in 2018 for about 300 bucks, or 250 can’t remember. If you have an og Xbox and a 360 you really don’t need series x.

Now to pick up the best game on Xbox 360 that is not backwards compatible.

I had a lot more fun with this game than I thought I would. Still hoping for it to become BC or re-released like every other damn game.

Even with XB1/Series S/X Backwards Compat - there are still plenty of 360 games only playable on the 360 console itself, and quite a few digital only.
I recently sorted and re-downloaded all of my 360 digital exclusives. I forgot I even bought or owned half of this stuff - not having a box to look at. Pretty sad the new digital age we live in.

It was a pain in the ass going thru my digital downloads thru the xbox360 dashboard. I would recommend to anyone who hasnt kept their library up to date to get on it.

Since I literally just documented this stuff from my collection to remind me what I own is actually exclusive to 360, here's my picks:

360 digital exclusives - not yet on XB1/Series X/S BC:

Bangai-O Missile Fury, Bionic Commano Rearmed, Rez HD, After Burner Climax, Fez, Under Defeat HD, Raystorm HD, Marvel vs Capcom Origins and 2, Darkstalkers Resurrection, Street Fighter III Online Edition, Deathsmiles 2X, Shooting Love 200X, Xmen Arcade, TMNT 1989 and Reshelled, Sega Rally Online, Poker Smash

360 exclusives you can get physically - not yet on XB1/Series X/S BC:
All Cave shmups (many are region free), Raiden Fighters Aces, Virtual On Force, Eschatos, Ginga Force, Lollipop Chainsaw, Bionic Commando 3d, Binary Domain, Tenchu Z, Eternal Sonata, Nier 1, Chromehounds, Armored Core 4/5/For Answer/Verdict Day, Ace Combat Assault Horizon, DoA Xtreme 2, Ridge Racer 6, Sega Rally Revo, Anarchy Reigns, Forza 4

Original Xbox Games BC on 360 but not yet on XB1/Series X/S BC:
Outrun 2006 Coast to Coast (runs pretty flawless on 360, vanilla OR2 does not)
Jet Set Radio Future (the non Sega GT version is the only copy that works)
Daisenryaku Modern Military Tactics

So yeah, plenty worth keeping the 360 hooked up.
I didnt even know I owned some of this stuff like Under Defeat and Raystorm. I must have bought them when they were on sale for like 3 bucks.
I completely forgot Rez HD is still only on 360 - I thought it was on XB1 BC for some reason.
Seriously! This is a really nice post. Thank you.

Shame it wasn't the original fat 360? You could have experienced the god tier "Blades" UI (as long as you didnt update).
I really wish Microsoft would push out an update to put the blades interface back on Xbox360. It’s time to let us geezers remember our early 20s again.

Honestly, I could own just an Xbox 360 and be happy for the rest of my life. Even though I've played a big portion of its library there is so much I haven't played and the stuff on the 360 is just so damn good. Great console. As a couple others have said, good games, are good games. I still collect for the 360 myself. Enjoy it.

Some recommendations:

Alpha Protocol
Ninja Blade
Burnout 3: Takedown (an Xbox original that isn't BC with XBSX yet)
Need for Speed: Most Wanted (the original one)

Its a fantastic console, enjoy!

My man. I've really wanted to play it lately and it's near impossible to find these days. I'll probably end up ordering a Japanese copy since they are pretty easy to find and have english support AFAIK.

I would get these exclusives:
  • Amped 3 - the last AAA winter sports game, with a wacky vibe.
  • Lost Odysee - A masterfull JRPG from Mr. SAKAGUCHI with a dark and deep story.
  • blue Dragon - A 3D jrpg also from the creators of FF. The colorfull arstyle let this game age very well.
  • Chromehounds - A Mech action game from FROMSOFTWARE
  • Fable 2 with the Pubgames - Best Fable and the Pubgames are way to addicting.
  • Kingdom under Fire - Very unique mix of RTS, HacknSlay and RPG elements.
Have Fun :messenger_beaming:
Chromehounds was an amazing multi-player mech game, but the vast majority of the game was online only and the servers were shut down in 2010. The single player tutorial campaign is fun, but can be completed in about three or four hours. Everything else was online.

The Kingdom Under Fire game on the Xbox 360 was Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom, a dungeon crawler action-RPG. It is brutally hard in single player and the up to 4-player co-op, which made the game much more fun, was online only. There is no offline couch co-op mode. The game is unique and even has some relationship/dating sim elements, but it's rather dry and only for the hardcore who can appreciate brutally hard and odd Asian/Japanese titles.

Hope you aren't into Halo much. Xbox 360 server support for 360 Halo titles end later this year. You can still do local multiplayer/system link or campaigns, but no Live after 2021.

Are the Servers still going for Ridge Racer 6? I'm actually tempted to get one again myself just to play that again. Online was always far better than RR7 imo

I do love the 360. Was a great console and had many happy memories with it. I recommend:

Call of Duty 2
Condemned Criminal Origins
Dead Rising
Halo CE, Halo 2 (backwards compatible), Halo 3 and Halo Reach
Halo Wars - Surprisingly a great RTS and plays very well with a controller.
Chromehounds - I believe the servers are closed but if it has system link, please multiplayer via xLink.
Gears trilogy
Perfect Dark Zero - It has mixed reviews but I thought it was decent.

Protip: The 360 offers an optional install, install the games onto the hard drive to save from wear & tear and slightly improved loading times.

PGR 1 and 2 were better

I agree that PGR2 is easily the best, but PGR3 and especially 4 are worth anyone's time.

And yeah, when I bought my Series X, I was expecting to be able to play most of my 360's library. Didn't take long for me to realize that I had to plug my 360 back on my TV. Can't play Soul Calibur IV-V / Dead or Alive 4-5 / Most SHMUPS / PGR 3-4 / Ridge Racer 6 / etc on a Xbox One/X/Series S/X.

I've learned that it is night and day in some cases. Lost Odyssey benefits a lot for instance.

Most are like what you describe though, slighly better loading times only.

And some, are actually worse, I remember GTA5 installs to HDD always and uses both DVD read streaming and HDD Streaming, so if you install both (?) you create a streaming bottleneck.

Yes, I skipped Xbox last gen, but when I bought a Xbox One S for my girlfriends youngest, who is crazy about racing and shooting games, I assumed I could offset Forza 6/7 price by giving/borrowing him Forza 4 and PGR4, no dice.

That made it so that the console didn't end up as cheap as I originally thought because I had to buy Forza 6 (better than 7 for offline play, I concluded - also cheaper), then Forza Horizon 4, but... Seeing how the kid treats his games, means my Forza 4 and PGR4 copies are safest with me.

Xbox 360 BC is a really nice to have and with kids in tow you know you can just get some games on the cheap, graphics are still good enough and games are cheap. I think I bought, Battlefield Bad Company 2 (great campaign, online is still on, well regarded), Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (it was like 3 pounds, kid played on easy and beat it in one day :messenger_face_steam: , but still likes to play the deathmatch co-op thing), Bioshock Infinite because it was cheap and why not and Darksiders 1, because seeing there is a "HD remaster" the older HD version is just so cheap and kid likes brawlers. Ah, and lastly but not least, Saints Row IV, also really cheap.

All this must have been less than 15 euros. I still haven't sourced a copy of GTAIV because it sells for roughly 15 euros, which means a lot of other games.

If Xbox One S didn't have X360 back-compat kid would have like 25% of the games he has. And, if Xbox Series S read discs and had full X360 compatibility, I would buy one here and now.

I should also note that, on the Xbox 360 store:

- Crackdown 1 and 2 are free! (Someone mentioned Crackdown in this thread already)
- Too Human is free as well (supposedly meh game, but some might enjoy going through it - I'm kinda amazed it wasn't delisted)
- Resident Evil Revelations 2 for X360 is free too. This is the full game, not the first episode (on Xbox One and PS4 you get the aforementioned first episode only, so a demo) - I'm not sure why is it free, but it's been that way for years.

Some of these games I will need to check out, not sure if anyone has recommended it to you O.P but Top Spin 4 should also be on your list to THIS DAY, despite the additonal power that has come since that game released it has not been bettered and you wonder when such a calibre of tennis game will ever come again....I recently got my copy of Blur, but aim to check out James Bond Bloodstone and Alpha Protocol, as well as the 2005 NFS Most Wanted..

Interesting. Ive been working on my 360 library and Top Spin definitely went under my radar all these years - ill have to give it a look.
Ive been playing a lot of Virtua Tennis on Dreamcast lately.
Are the Virtua Tennis 360 games any good - I read that the team from the original made VT4.

I would pick up GUN - It was a launch title and the graphics have aged a little bit but it's a short, fun story. I love the game and the controls. It's one of the games I was hoping would end up on BC.

easier to program isn't the only reason the 360 had better graphics. it also had more memory and a better graphics card. also, the cpu in the 360 uses alot of the tech in the cell. the supposed power of the ps3 never materialized.

They are ok, but Top Spin is the best of the lot, and arguably yeah for all the merits of the original NFS Most Wanted as a launch 360 title, you would be better off with Hot Pursuit re-mastered, with that you get to play not just as a racer but as a cop too, it doesn't have that brown/beige tint to it in visuals, and you get weaponry that you don't get at all in Most Wanted...

The only game you'll need pal.

(And not just because I worked on it)
Wait, what!?

Dude, man I miss when you Brits made crazy shit like this. Congrats on being partially responsible for a cult classic.

There's a lot of licensed games that will be unlikely to get re-released for modern systems like Godfather, Scarface, Lord of the Rings games, etc.

I would really like to be able to play some of the old Incredible Hulk games again.

I've actually been shopping around for licensed Activison games as of recent for this reason among a variety of others. I really have no interest in modern game renditions of licensed/Marvel properties.

Those long posts don't cover that red neck boy
I bought mines 3-4 years ago and its my main console, how about that.

The main advantage of buying this for cheap was that the games from it are also cheap as dirt. As such i have amassed 60+ FPS titles for the thing and i love it.

Oddly enough 2005 hardware still holds up semi-decently. Its usually 720p and lower, but the shader era really has done wonders for the deaging of games.

On a whim (the stimulus didn't help), I decided to purchase an Xbox 360. I've never owned a 360 as I was mostly a PC gamer and preferred Sony systems since they mostly had the same multi-plats and a ton of exclusives. At the time, I just didn't like the idea that the Xbox used DVDs with less storage space than Blu-ray (making some games use multi-discs) and potentially less powerful hardware overall. Also, the then idea of paying for Xbox Live to play online or even use a web browser or apps was absurd to me as a PC gamer.

Fast forward to 2021 and for some reason, the 360 is fascinating to me. Despite the PS3 being more powerful, the 360 was easier to program for and the multi-plats tended to be better on the 360. Also, this era for PC gaming was rough. With the 360 being PowerPC based and the PS3 using cell, PC games had to be completely programmed specially for PC. It's not like now where everything uses x86 and it's a quick and easy port between all 3 platforms. Almost without fail, the PC ports from this era are garbage or don't play well on modern computers.

With this being the case, I decided I'd like to get a 360 as a companion piece to sit alongside my PC. Thus the search began for a 360. I'm guessing due to COVID, all game systems are hard to find. I went to numerous local shops and no one had any. I took to eBay and I can't believe how grody most of the listings are. How in the world do people treat their systems where they are scratched to hell in that rough of shape? I eventually found a listing for a still sealed 250GB S model at a reasonable price and bit on it.

All of that out of the way, what are most must play games and especially games that have rough PC ports that would be definitive? I definitely want the Gears of War games and Red Dead Redemption since they don't have PC releases. I'll probably grab Call of Duty 3 as well since it never got a PC release. Anything else I should be on the lookout for?
Well done you wasted another stimulus cheque

Condemned
Halo 3
Halo 4
Halo: Reach
Gears of War
Alan Wake
PGR 3 and 4
BioShock 1, 2 and not least BioShock Infinite
Rise of the Tomb Raider (looks great on the 360!)

I found a brand new 360E at Meijer about two years ago on clearance for $90, and immediately snapped it up. It resides as a dedicated Guitar Hero / Rock Band machine in our downstairs bar.

For as much as we hear praise of back compatibility on Xbox One/Series, the Xbox 360 has more back compatibility of OG xbox games than the One/Series
