Hogwarts Legacy has over 100 side quests that "manipulate the main campaign"

Played in any order, they will "impact how you interact with them in the main storyline"

Wizarding RPG Hogwarts Legacy will let you shape your destiny with over 100 side quests – and you can play them in any order.

As one of the most hotly-anticipated new games 2023, we already know that the twists and turns of this open-word adventure will feature expansive maps and character creation. According to narrative director and advanced game writer Moira Squier, it seems the plot itself will be similarly staggering.

"The main storyline is complicated and engaging and involves a variety of different characters and viewpoints," Squier told GamesRadar+ in an interview as part of our Hogwarts Legacy preview. "But by giving the player choice moments throughout the game, we allow them to tell their own version of that epic story."

As well as playing through the storyline itself, your character's decisions in what they choose to do outside classes could "manipulate the main campaign by virtue of the experiences they've had," says Squier. "Interacting with someone in a side quest will impact how you interact with them in the main storyline - and vice versa."

There doesn't seem to be any linearity in how these missions should be played. "The order in which the player chooses to complete these quests will impact their story and game. Everything is interconnected," confirmed Squier. "So, while it was challenging, it was a lot of fun to do, and it's rewarding to see how well it turned out."

So yes, it's a bummer that we won't be able to play Quidditch in Hogwarts Legacy, but with branching side quests to influence how our characters react to the world around them, it seems we will have plenty to keep us busy in the magical realm anyway.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Oh Gamesradar...

Although she is not involved in the development of Hogwarts Legacy, GamesRadar+ acknowledges the role of J.K. Rowling in the creation of the Wizarding World, as well as her publicly-stated, harmful views regarding the rights of transgender people. If you'd like to offer your support to the communities affected by Rowling's rhetoric, consider donating to the National Center for Transgender Equality in the US, or Mermaids in the UK.

My best guess is this

Main quest requires you 1 or 2 allies(maybe more, depending on the progress of story), but in order to get those allies you need to help them. So it will be either:

- Doing side-quests, getting those allies to help you and the story(and gameplay) will be different or simply normal
- Not giving a crap about them, do things alone and the story dramatically changes(and also it's difficulty)

Worst case scenario: just dialogues.

On a serious note, it'll be interesting to see if they're able to pull something like this off - and to what extent. Branching narrative paths are something that are incredibly difficult to do well. The more your game branches into completely divergent paths, the more you're splitting up content that's being created that will only ever be seen by a small percentage of players. From a corporate standpoint, it doesn't make a lot of sense to hire a voice actor to do 50 hours of voice acting for a game that will only take the player 5 hours to complete.

I would argue that The Dark Pictures anthology games are the ones that spring to mind when I think of modern examples of this being done well. But these games are also incredibly linear with no backtracking, so the narrative always moves forward with your choices and mostly really comes down to "who is still alive, and who has died?".

Cool for them if they can pull it off, but as others have said already I imagine it's just some bit of unique dialog or something similar to Mass Effect 3's whole "galactic readiness" score.

When has a game ever had meaningful side quests while 9/10 developers says they do.

GoW:Ragnarok, Witcher 3 probably.
The Ubi brand of side quests are literally everywhere.

Huh, color me intrigued.

I need to pay more attention to this game I guess; figured it'd be another light-weight 3rd person action game and not an expansive RPG.

Jesus fucking christ shut the fuck up about resetera.

Thanks

I suppose it's going to be best to not move on with the main story until you have completed all the side-quests, I don't like to replay games so this will be the way I play anyway.

Keeping the discussion to the game only, I think this is shaping up to be a decent RPG. I'm really looking forward to it.

Oh Gamesradar...
Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a condition of the nervous system. TS causes people to have “tics”. Tics are sudden twitches, movements, or sounds that people do repeatedly. People who have tics cannot stop their body from doing these things. For example, a person might keep blinking over and over...

i really believe that 'declarations' like this are like a form of mental tourettes. it's become so internalized that it's being done unconsciously/spontaneously at this point...

Why do you consider it funny? If they did nothing, they would probably have some Reeetards attacking them for the evil act of mentioning this game. I mean sure it would be better if they acknowledged that Rowling that nothing to do with the game and told people that if they have a problem with people discussing it, that they can go fuck themselves with the mummified remains of their pre-transition penises, but throwing up a disclaimer like the one they actually went with makes perfect business sense.

You know how these reeetards lose power and go away?

Companies and corporations not giving the mentally ill the time of day.

Ignore ree idiots. It's how you take their power away.

Acting like the reetards are important is the problem. We have a saying here in Australia, Eat a bag of concrete and harden the fuck up.

The only Avalanche game I have had extensive hands-on with is Mad Max. I went into that game not really knowing what to expect in terms of quality and after about 15 hours I was left very surprised by how polished the gameplay was and how good the writing and story were delivered. This Hogwarts game seems like a much larger scope than Mad Max, but I think this studio can deliver.
