Hillbilly elegy movie- how is this only 28% on RT?

Just finished the movie. How is this only 28% on Rotten Tomatoes?
It had an interesting and emotional story, a side of American small town Appalachian culture not often seen, great acting and an immensely likeable cast. The editing was the only thing that was somewhat average, but rest was great.
It got bad reviews just because its supposedly 'white' story? I for one enjoyed it even more as a non-white person since it showed me a world that is very far away both in terms of space and culture to me, but at the same time there were struggles that are just the same for all of us- complicated families, quest to become a better person etc.
Recommend it to all here at GAF, ignore the reviews and give it a watch.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. I’m with you in not understanding the reviews. It wasn’t a great movie, but in a world of formulaic garbage movies, this was at least interesting. If it’s true that some people didn’t like the movie because of the color of the characters in the story… well, that says quite a bit about who those people are, now doesn’t it?

I looked up the trailer and forgot this existed. I probably palmed it off as another average Netflox show.

Rotten Tomatoes critics don’t like movies that show certain cultural aspects under a positive light.

You need to look at audience scores and even those can be manipulated. I have learned to pick movies below 50% RT lately and they are often surprisingly good.

It was boring to me. I fell asleep at the first 30 or so minutes. If some of y'all liked it, great. It was just boring and not interesting to me.

It's poor people struggle porn for the well off to feel better about themselves.

didn’t see the movie but read the book
book was average at best so can’t see how the movie could be any better than average

I thought it was pretty good and well acted. Then again, a lot of it overlapped with my own childhood and adolescence, so it was very easy to relate to it in many ways.

But, uh, yeah, I suspect a big part of why it got a bad wrap mirrors the reception the book got when it came out in 2016 (2017?). It was not a topic a lot of people wanted to care about at the time. Or maybe most critics just thought it was a bad movie, I dunno. I don't give a shit what critics think.

The film is shit. No surprise because the book was shit too. Rocky had more insight on the effects of poverty on the working class. Vance can take his bologna sandwiches and cram them up his ass

Your answer is that the author of the book might run for political office and the ratings for this movie are probably getting spammed. We shouldn't take the discussion any further and just leave it at that.

This movie was incredibly good. A rollercoaster of emotions, sometimes tough to watch due to how sad it can get, but in every scene the payoff is huge.
It is maybe Glen Close’s best role. Definitely Amy Adam’s.

Really surprised? Critics are most liberals. This conflicts with their cult like idealogies. I'll let you piece together the rest.

If rocky came out today they'd review it shit for the same reasons and you know it. It wouldn't be woke enough. And saying this movie is shit is just fucking ridiculous. The only score on that site that matters is the audience score. But hey if you want to call a movie shit based off RT then go ahead and tell how amazing The Last Jedi was.
